    The Kirtland Temple is not set up for modern Endowment ceremonies. We couldn't convert it over to that use without destroying the original integrity of that sacred space. I've always thought that if the Church ever bought the Kirtland Temple, it would be best to just continue to keep it open for tours.

    It is interesting how amicable the relationship is between the two churches. 100 or so years ago, the relationship was very adversarial and bitter. I'm pleased that today, we consider our religious cousins of the CofC as friends. Without good relations, this transfer of historic buildings etc. would have been very unlikely.

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 6 месяцев назад +1

      There are probably a number of reasons for the
      After Joseph Smith died the church divided between those who wanted to stay in Nauvoo and those who wanted to leave. Many disagreed with Brigham Young’s decision to leave and so formed their own church. James Jesse Strang began what would become the Reorganised Church, claiming that he’d received instruction from Joseph Smith that he was to be the next president of the church. Brigham Young, as you’d expect, did not agree. That was the first big disagreement.
      The second disagreement was over Strang’s claim that at some point, when old enough, the church should be led by a descendant of Joseph Smith and would then continue to be so. Brigham Young, however, had received revelation that in the absence of a prophet the president of the Quorum Of The Twelve would lead the church (which is what Young was at the time) and he later set the precedent that the President of the Quorum Of The 12 would succeed the presidency of the church o. The death of the previous church president. The LDS still practice this today. Likewise, after Joseph Smith III became the president of the Reirganised Church, every president was a direct descendent of Joseph Smith until 1996.
      There were also a number of disagreements over doctrine. Many members of the reorganised church opposed some of the changes that Brigham Young was introducing to the temple ordinances (including a lot of the symbolism that the LDS church uses today) and favoured the much simpler ordinances and practices that Joseph Smith first instituted. Many of the Saints who remained in Nauvoo were also anti-polygamy, at a time when the LDS church still practiced it. Indeed both Emma Smith and Joseph Smith III remained anti-polygamy until their dying day and denied that Joseph Smith ever committed it (something you’ll never here in the LDS church is the fact that Emma Smith was unaware of most of Joseph’s other marriages and was adamant that the details were all made up by Brigham Young after Joseph’s death). Interestingly, Strang started practicing polygamy which drove many of his followers towards Joseph Smith III who condemned the practice.
      As the Reorganised Church continued it also became more Protestant in its leanings. By 1984 they even opened up the Priesthood to women.
      Interestingly, Joseph Smith III always claimed that the Reorganised Church followed the pattern set by Joseph Smith closely whilst Brigham Young and the Latter Day Saints were distorting, changing and adding to what Joseph Smith had established. One thing that is sure, the church and the way it was organised was never the same after Brigham Young assumed leadership.
      So, to summarise, the disagreement was a combination of a power play following a leadership vacuum, a rejection of Brigham Young and many of his ideas, a desire to stay in Nauvoo and fundamental doctrinal differences. But the two churches have long been united at least by a shared love of Joseph Smith and the Book Of Mormon, even if nothing else.

  • @AllenSparkman
    @AllenSparkman 6 месяцев назад +16

    The Kirtland Temple was not designed for Baptisms, Endowments and Sealings so modifying it for regular temple worship would not work. Tearing it down to build a modern temple would be a desecration, and would never be considered. It's meaning was the unfolding of the Restoration, and that is important enough to preserve it.

    When Brigham Young baptized my ancestors in Canada they moved to Kirkland. There are some records of them being taught by Joseph Smith in the Kirkland temple. For historical purposes it is nice to see that this building will be preserved for many more years. I'm of the belief that the period of gathering into a single location has passed. The scriptures declaring that in the last days the New Jerusalem would be established in the tops of the mountains clearly meant that these Eastern sites would be abandoned. I've always liked the statement that the bible is not religion but the history of religion. It is much more important how we treat our neighbors today. I'm glad that my church was able to help the Community of Christ in their current time of need. I expect that we will continue to maintain these great historical locations as the Community of Christ has done.

    these details show the hand of Christ in the dealings of the community of Christ one example is the fact that Joseph Smith III went and made friends with those in the regions where the saints had been driven from whereas the Utah church still holds an unjustified victimh and siege mentality regarding these events. In a Sunday school manual published by the community of Christ they say straight up we were partly at fault and they do on behalf of the Utah church since there was no separation in those days. This spirit of Christ still persists in their culture.

      Of the 63 acres the Community of Christ owns most of it, with the LDS Church owning the 2nd largest part. There is a big auditorium that they own that is kitty corner from their Temple, and across the street from the LDS Visitor Center. The Church did not acquire it, but it is not something the church needs nor does it have any historical value.
      The 300X200 sq ft. Temple Lot that Joseph Smith dedicated for the Temple, that is kitty corner from the LDS Visitor center and just a short walk to go to it, is not owned by either the Community of Christ nor The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is owned by a church originally called The Church of Christ Temple Lot but is now known as The Church of Christ.. The original corner markers that Joseph placed there at the time of dedication of the lot, have been removed by The Church of Christ to prevent them from being stolen. They are in their little church and they do allow you to come in and see them.

      @@VaLynne1 Great answer! I won't say that the Lord will not eventually reclaim every part of land prophesied to be inheritance, whether by purchase in advance or after His return, that they aren't needed and without historical value. However, not much was developed there in the Saints' time there, just the corner markers and maybe some cabin homes long ago destroyed and/or removed. At least as late as the 1980's the church would still actively buy land in Jackson County, to establish legal inheritance, following that the Doctrine and Covenants talks about purchasing the land.
      I grew up in Independence, Missouri. Both my parents converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at ages 23 and 19 before they married, so I was raised in the church. I have many friends from the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) and I especially like the Restoration Branch that broke away from the RLDS before it became the Community of Christ.

    With all due respect to the CofC church, I have a friend who was a member of that church and she told me a ton about it and said very few people attend anymore, and almost no members pay tithing anymore either, leaving their church near-bankrupt and deeply in debt. The CofC church has been selling off most all of their properties and assets in the past decade, as they move to being a very small secular Christian sect and away from the restoration beliefs. The CofC's constitution, established by Joseph Smith III, in the late 1800's, stated, ONLY descendants of Joseph Smith Jr. can be president and prophet of their church. That changed in the 1980's with a non-Smith appointed president. Other core doctrines changed as well, causing mass exodus' of members, which they've never recovered. The Church of Jesus Christ is preparing to purchase ALL of the land around the temple site in Independence from the CofC and Temple Lot church's, and already has the design completed for the massive Temple of Zion there, and new church headquarter buildings. We have a friend who worked as a chief architect for the church who described, in detail, the New Jerusalem Temple in Independence, which its 40 story high steeple and 12 domes surrounding the steeple, acting as a Temple and a learning center, and other details, including a stone wall around the Temple grounds with 12 separate gates, with each Israelite tribe's name over each entrance. The JST or Joseph Smith Translation, has been really downplayed in the LDS religion, partially because the copyright was owned by the Community of Christ Church. I think we will look a lot deeper into this scripture now. It is actually not a translation but more rightly called the Inspired version. It corrects many inconsistencies in the Bible and offers much more insight into the teachings of Jesus Christ. I guess that is what Prophets are for: explaining the deeper meanings.

      After Joseph Smith Jr was martyred, the Twelve Apostles took the leadership role. The President of that body at the time was Brigham Young. (Later he would reconstitute a new First Presidency.) At a large meeting in which he and other would-be leaders spoke, some in the audience reported him taking on the voice or appearance of Joseph Smith.
      The Apostles were responsible for leading missionary efforts in other parts of the US, Canada, Britain, Denmark, etc., so the membership in those places almost entirely followed the apostles. This became The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which relocated across the Plains to Salt Lake City.
      But it's worth noting that many in Nauvoo did not. The several other would-be leaders gathered their own flocks. Some stayed in that area. Some traveled back to Missouri, or to Texas, or Wisconsin, or other locations. A decade later, Joseph Smith III (who was a child when his father died) claimed the role of Prophet and President of the church was meant to be hereditary. He gathered people from many of these scattered groups into The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They rejected plural marriage and other practices that developed in the Nauvoo era, like the temple ceremonies. They largely focused on the Kirtland era of the early church, and moved their headquarters to Independence, Missouri.

I think it is awesome that The Church of Jesus Christ was able to acquire the Red Brick Store, just 12 days before the Relief Society birthday of March 17th. I have been to Kirtland and Nauvoo both, several times but not since 2021, and because of lack of money, the Community of Christ was unable to staff the Kirtland Temple and Red Brick Store so did not get to go into either at that time ( Shortly after that Return Senior Missionaries would go to Kirtland and offer to give tours for free. They were able to do so under the direction of the CoChrist. I am going again in September to Nauvoo I am looking forward to going though the buildings with missionaries called to serve there.

      The 2nd floor is in good shape but the 3rd floor, basically storage area from what we were told, was not restored. But as far as "Would the community of Christ be okay with that," make as much sense as you remodeling your house after buying it from a family who had previously owned it. I don't think the previous owners would care one way or the other what you do with it now that they don't own it, as long as they knew you loved it as much as they had and wanted to make it nicer, not tear it apart. And I am pretty sure the Community of Christ knows The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would never want to do anything to take away from the Temple. I think The Church of Jesus Christ is planning on making some repairs the Community of Christ has been unable to afford to do.
