Steam Whistle Echos in the Mountains

- On the Durango & Silverton Railroad, a 3 note whistle breaks the silence of the Rocky Mountains at Cascade Canyon as the engineer calls passengers back to the train for the return trip to Durango. December, 2006
0:40 I absolutely love the sound that follows after the whistle stops. The echoes of the whistle, travelling through and bouncing back from the mountains. The tone and sound it creates is so...ethereal.
It genuinely sounds like Angels coming down from the Heavens. And it's just, well, Heavenly..
0:52 and just like that! End!
That sound reminds me of my father....he loved that sound, he just loved trains...
R. I. P. Dad...and Mom 😢
@@andrewpetik2034 If there was a heart button, I would use it. But, at least you have this to remember them by. May they rest in piece.
Btw the 3 whistle blasts where for calling in passengers that the train was leaving in 10 minutes
Why can’t people appreciate trains. They are beautiful. Without trains, cars wouldn’t have evolved the way they did. FOR ALL YOU CAR LOVERS!
Also 70% of american freight comes from trains. If we dont have them then there will be a butt load of trucks on thr road causing traffic jams every which way.
@Fluffnose 339 You read my mind exactly. Said the words right out of my mouth. I took a Amtrak trip on a train as my graduation present from high school; and the trip was from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Best time of my life. The scenery, the private cars hooked up at the end, the faint noise of the train horn blowing, rocking back and forth at track speeds of 50-60 mph. What a joy ride. I took plenty of pictures and I will always cherish them. At some point in my life I want to take my mother on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad. Absolutely love steam trains. I love diesel too but, steam holds a special place in my heart. And the D&S is one of the best trips for scenery that you can take in the US, possibly the world. Or at least so I’ve heard. I would also like to see Big Boy #4014 in real life under her own power, because the camera will never be able to show actual size to scale unless you see it with your own two eyes and hear it with your own two ears.
Very well said
Wiser words were never spoken
Very true
That my frend is the Iron horse calling for her ancestors. Just beautiful
Friend
the echos are the past engineers saying "you're not alone..."
DANG that hit me hard...
That is very well said. Hit hard
oMg sUpEr DeEp
Cringe
Why can't y'all just fucking appreciate a fucking comment.
Just don't say anything then.
The steam whistles sound so majestic.
Yep wonder why it would do different from the diesel ones
Man that last one with it's change in notes and echo....seriously beautiful Lol
Most beautiful audio of 473 out there, I remember going to the D&SNG for the first time and hearing that D&RGW 3 Chime and seeing 473 brought tears to me. Wish there were more of these D&RGW 3's or an whistle from the D&RGW around today.
I'd love to be in the canyon and hear that. Awesome sound
Yes indeed!
I was on that ride a few years ago. Amazing experience!
goose bumps all over
How just how, it’s so majestic
you can here the sad call in the whistle of that old steamer calling out for it's fallen brethren...
That hit hard
That’s echo is magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. The way the notes hang in the air and bounce off the mountains. Steam locomotives were and are some of the most fascinating things we’ve created. Nearly living and breathing beasts with voices
Person: "What instrument do you play?"
The Engineer: "The steam whistle."
That's right, I do play the whistle
[WOOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOO]
For those interested in what notes the whistle is playing, the first few blasts are playing a perfectly tuned D major first inversion chord (D/F# or F# A D). The last blast that isn't at full pressure produced a root position e minor chord (Emin or E G B).
Yeah because the person driving the train drained some of the pressure making the last one out of tune
And if you listen closely, Very closely, the echo creates a beautiful chord as it decays:
0:43
Is it wrong to tear up a little when I hear this?
Same. Most beautiful sound in the world.
Just the fact that it echoed so calmly sounds like a beautiful instrument playing in the distance
No it is the sound of American past coming back to show us that it may have died, but it never left us. It's still here you just have to find it and this video is a perfect example.
No it is not go a head let it flow
Its that end note 😂 that gets ya
The steam age will never die and live forever I hope
The call of the past telling us that it may have died with time, but it never left here the whistle is a victory cry to all even its fallen brothers of the rail and men that ran them in the Civil War, old west, WW1, WW2 and today... its saying "For Freedom and Glory we stand as brothers, to the end of life we cherish one another."
That's a beautiful and sad chilling story you have there.
So haunting. Give me massive chills
It's sounds like these, train whistles echoing in the mountains or valleys, that give me a fluttery feeling, one of sadness, happiness, and longing to be in a place where you can see and hear these every day, day in day out, dawn or dusk, you can hear or see these living fire breathing beasts no matter where you are in the town
Wish I could hear that every day here in Carolina
You can hear the sound of a big Diesel engine’s horn echo through my little town whenever it goes over the crossing at night. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to live where I do and hear a beautiful whistle of a steam locomotive echo through the evening like 100 years ago 🚂
Keep coming back to listen to this recording of Durango and Silverton No. 473 over the years....beautiful. The video may be 15 years old but still one of the best recording out there!
BEAUTIFUL!!!! Brings tears to my eyes. Absolutely awesome. 5 Stars.
The echo of a steam whistle is one of those beautiful sounds that just always captures the moment no matter the setting
Well, I listened to this yet another time.
And again.
Absolutely beautiful. The echoes of the whistle sound like a chorus from the past. I love it. 5 stars from me, mate.
It's neither a Pennsy or a Lunkenheimer. It's a D&RGW shop built whistle.
It's a D&RGW 3 Chime whistle on 473!
Wow you are smart
NanoTelerEphone thank you
Without trains, we wouldn't be something.
Everytime I hear a steam engine whistle, tears come out of my eyes and I start thinking about my grandparents and my parents.
Guys it’s just an opinion that this is the best sound ever
An opinion I couldn’t agree more with, gives me chills
I've ridden this train, not in the winter, but the sound of that whistle and the echo is haunting.
it sounds like a ghost engine from the good old days
It is hauntingly beautiful!
The engineers there are great! Me and a few other visitors were talking to the engineers and I swear he held the whistle down for at least 20 seconds.
imagine you're in the colorado wilderness, late at night. all of a sudden, you hear this. what do you do?
It is almost unexplainable the feeling of hearing that sound.
If the engineer knows how to really use the whistle it's hands down one of if not the most impressive sounds ever produced by humans.
A steam locomotive and all its complexity and how absolutely beautiful they are as working art they are some of the most important and world changing things that sound means so much more then just a whistle in the valley.
Such an amazing thing to watch and hear and I'll never get tired of hearing a train off in the distance and that whistle sadly singing with that eco ..
The sound of power and engineering at its finest in my opinion.
This 3 chime (473’s D&RGW 3 chime) is my favorite 3 chime in existance!
Absolutely beautiful
0:05 D&RGW 3 Chime whistle sounds sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful
To me it sounds like
Werrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Brings a tear to my eye hearing that echo. It's like hearing lost souls from iron horses of yesteryear answering back through the mountains.
Hey thunder, didn’t expect to see you here 😆
The sound
Frequency and Vibration feel like the train is speaking She is saying something hauntingly beautiful With Strength and Sadness
some people will never understand 0:33
Yes. I for one teared up. That is the sound of the past engineers who walk by the side of the locomotive, and gracefully walking it to the day where it's decay will fade away. The day that the mountain just lay. The day that 473 will go off and become a hero every single day.
This is to be the most majestic and beautiful video I have ever seen
close your eyes and imagine shay 4 backing down to the deopt at cass!
My all time favorite video on RUclips.
This is a killer video.. I put on the headphones for this one.. Thanks so much for posting..
WOW! May i use this on one of my YT opening videos. Just about 10 seconds.. Beautiful!
esp the last blow at the end sounded so sad =[
An old loco pining for its lost brethren
now that whistle is pretty clear compared to a lot i have heard on utube , ty for sharing
This is my new favorite thing
Beautiful...absolutely amazing. I wish I could hear more things like this in my life
Sounds like the lost soul of an engine calling out to the people to be noticed
same here... i tear up but dont really know why...
James Colbert me too it's odd..
Raymond Colbert It is very strange indeed. I probably tear up because every time I hear the steam engine whistles, it reminds me of my childhood.
That's crazy imagine this at night.. Definitely colorado
The Denver and Rio grande Western rolls on!!!!
That beautiful echo at 0:41 my gosh💙
My soul melted, but I don’t know where to, probably in the fire box
OMG! I,m In Tears! OMG! So BEAUTIFUL!
Bugger me, that echo is surreal!
The echos of past D&RGW locomotives
It's like the call of the dinosaurs
this is so freaking beautiful
42's Crosby 3 chime whistle from efom
Im pretty deep into this rabbit hole lol I can only imagine how great that sounded in person!
Whistle of Denver & Rio Grande Western
that's a very nice sounding steam whistle=) great echoing to
I’ve been there with my family!
Man!! I love that sound 😊
Beautiful! What an Echo!
Beautiful
Music to my ears 😊
What was meant to be a warning at a railroad crossing turned out to be one of the greatest musical instruments.
Thing of beautiful history right there.
That was fucking AWESOME!!!!
flatcarwillie nailed it.
that is just awesome, its like a ghost train going through that open field
I almost droped a tear,
0:41 looks angelical
What an awesome sound.. to bad you hardly hear it anymore :(
This one is added to Trainz
this is amazing
Other-worldly.
Cool echo
The literal voice of god
This would sound great in a Lionel engine. And with the whistle steam smoke effect that would make one heck of an engine!
Great idea but how do I find your comment in this video 2 years later just wow
This is the whistle from trainz
That’s a pretty sick d maj chord its playing
haunting..awesome!!!!
Wow its just beautiful 😢😢
If you hear closely you can hear the sound of an Angel
What an incredible sound!
This reminds me so much of Red Dead Redemption 2. That is so cool haha. Doppler effect.
when you hear the whistle blow, you will know that I'm gone, I'm 500 miles away from home...
I really wanna know how this got nailed by a copyright strike, its a steam whistle video- I suppose this is an example of how YT really needs to fix its copyright striking system.
2 words describe me rn:
FREAKING AWSOME!
Omg that's insaneeeee
Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of steam whistles and Locomotives, but not being being able to see the engine while its happening would freak me the f*ck out
0:32 I Would Love To put DRGW 473’s 3 Chime in Trainz:A New Era on My Laptop But It’s Not Working for Me.
And that’s Nia(QRR 2)’s Whistle
473 indeed.
@horncrazzy09 It's a Lunkenheimer 3 chime, or Lunk 3 chime for short. It's a very sweet whistle, one of my favorite whistles at that.
