    Used one of thoses for yrs in my field jacket when in the army. Just added a few buttons to the jacket and away. Allways in my webbing, so much smaller than an issue waterproof. In fact bought another only a few wks ago at a local auction, along with the dutch issue cotton outer, a leather bike jacket & a normal fleece all for £8 !!! Bargains are out there.

    Just checked, they are available in the US with sizes up to 2XXL for $19.99 or $17.99 if one has a membership with the seller. As an aside, and perhaps of interest to some viewers, I've been using an olive drab colored Frogg Toggs hooded rain jacket for years. While they don't stand up well to bushwhacking, they do work very well as an under layer for whatever one's personal choice of outerwear might be. I believe they are selling in the $20-$30 range for standard solid colors (some of the camo patterns are upwards of $70 for the rain suit) here in the states at some of the big box stores. I recently purchased their rain suit in a light blue color for about$27. It came in a flat package that easily fits in my pack and not only do I have a rain jacket, but I have waterproof trousers too. While the stock of military surplus jackets might not be around for long, the Frogg Toggs brand doesn't seem to ever run low so if one is in the market for breathable, lightweight waterproofing, they might be a good option to consider. As always Neil, great stuff and thanks for sharing!

    The problem with a poncho is your arms can get pretty wet if you need to work so a liner like this would be a perfect combo 👍

    The kit these days is light years away from the stuff we were issued back in the day. Hairy KF shirt, wooly pully jumper and smock. You were either sweating your nuts off or freezing. My son inherited my "Chinese fighting suit" and it causes massive outbreaks of nostalgia when the old sweats see it. He won't part with it as it still works. I'm still using a 1970's "Moon Bag", remember those? Great vid. Thank you.

    I may be a bit daft, but why not wear it over the smock so that it doesn't get waterlogged and the items in your pockets don't get soaked?

    Haven’t got my size, yes they are cheap under £20.
    I have the British army windproof smocks.
    I dyed the desert ones black and brown with Dylon dye.
    I have also waxed proofed them so they are waterproof.
    I used candle wax rubbed it all over the jackets and then melted it in with a hairdryer.
    No waterproof and windproof.
    Tough jackets, plenty of pockets. Easy to roll up and pack away.
    I do buy the Dutch kit as it’s well made and good quality for the money. 👍🏻🎒
    Keep the Army surplus videos coming.
    Love it. 😊👍🏻🪖

    There is waterproof wax you can rub on cloth to make it water resistant.
    I have some British Army stuff, which was available in more sizes.
    I would wear the shell over the smock, so it doesn't get wet.

  • @jan62811

    I'd recommend getting the full combo; smock, rain liner and winter fluffy liner. Don't know what they cost nowadays but I got mine for € 60 a few years ago and it kept me dry and warm for all that time. Through shitty weather 😬 Good surplus stores will give you Nato sizes, so you don't end up with something ill fitting. There's some Dutch army surplus stores who ship abroad and have good quality items (mine was un-issued) but be aware of import duties. Plus they come with a ton of pockets, which don't interfere with your bergen straps.

    Keela clothing is brilliant. I use a belay pertex down jacket in the winter and it keeps me toasty warm. I can wear it with just a t shirt in the spring and autumn. If it gets wet it drys out quick. For more inclement wet weather Keela do a waterproof fleece called the Neptune fleecd. It has a waterproof lining. I've had mine for years and wear it nearly every day. In winter when it's really cold and horrible I wear it over the belay jacket. It keeps me warm and dry.

    Great idea. Arktis do one at a reasonable price (not quite as cheap as this one) if you can’t find one of these. I was planning to get one for under a windproof smock instead of a w/proof smock, I figured it would be more flexible.

    Hi from the US. I was home in Ireland recently and was looking into pick up a British Army Basha. But I thought it a bit expensive at €100! Have not found any this side of pond, but how much would they retail for in the UK?

  • @davidnave4349
    @davidnave4349 Год назад

    If the smock is not wet proof why would you not wear the water proof jacket on the outside of the smock instead of the inside . Sounds backwards to me.

    • @greencraft4783
      @greencraft4783  Год назад

      Yes, it is a bit. The very lightweight goretex is protected from damage by the outer smock. The kit in your pockets is not covered up, so it makes access easier and it's super lightweight and very quiet in use. I often carry a poncho as my shelter and waterproof layer. This comes in very handy if the poncho is needed for shelter and it's hammering down. A military mate first told me about the concept years ago and it did seem odd. But having used it a lot over the years it does work.

  • @RonBolton-tv3hg
    @RonBolton-tv3hg Год назад +6

    I have a question. If the jacket is Goretex, presumably it is water proof and wind proof. Why, then, would you put a waterproof jacket under a non-water proof jacket? What is the thinking behind it?

    • @OldNavajoTricks
      @OldNavajoTricks Год назад +6

      Old army habit, smocks dry quickly and your kit is still accessible plus the waterproof one won't get saturated as quickly so you are dry, not damp.
