I have "take these broken wings and learn to fly" tattooed on my back. I struggled with anxiety and depression, but I over came it and I always thought of myself of the blackbird with broken wings who learned to fly. This song means so much to me and I always tear up when I hear it. ❤
@@davidkeith9015 Lucky you! When I was 11, I won tickets to see The Beatles at the Indiana State Fair. Of course, there were two tickets and my mom went with me. Didn't hear much because of all the screaming! I fell in love with Paul on the Ed Sullivan Show.
This is one of my favorite Beatles songs. When it was released, I had no idea it was about the civil rights movement. Paul is good at writing songs with several layers of meaning. I would sing it aloud to myself when I suffered great pain. It is truly a music classic, not just a Beatles classic.
The civil rights movement was active in the United States. They were interested in American politics and history but felt the need not to say things bc they were British. "Bird" is British slang for a young girl or woman. An attractive one. They eventually did make public declarations concerning Vietnam. Bc they were from Liverpool, they were exposed to much American black music. Unlike other pop performers of the time, they freely admitted they admired the music and named specific performers. They just said they adapted it with great respect. Paul and John would always suggest to fans that they check out the original recordings. I expect Bob Dylan was a major influence. You make the song timeless by not wedding it to a specific incident. I recall when the album was released. Paul did not talk about it then.
I completely agree with you but to me his brilliance is redefining how the guitar is played on this song. that is really really hard to do. to me it's a testimony to their true brilliance of thinking outside the box and searching for awnsers unknown before looking... thank you Paul
Understanding this is Paul's empathy, while in Scotland reading about racial segregation and racism in Little Rock all the way back then... which JUST happened. He wrote this in the hopes people who were oppressed via racism in America might hear this and be inspired to have a little hope. Like Strange Fruit, this isn't just an important and profound song about civil rights, it's beautiful.
I am from Chihuahua, México and I just read about the meaning.of this song in a bookstore in San Antonio, TX. You are right. It's about the civil rights of black people. "All your life you were only waiting.for this moment to be free". Amazing message of hope and motivation for the suppressed.
For god's sakes, Paul can play guitar, bass, piano, drums and any instrument you could probably think of better than most people. He's a genius! (Altough, I am exaggerating quite a bit there, aging does take a toll on all of us, so I'm sure he's not as sharp as he used to be, but he hasn't lost his brightness at all.)
Paul McCartney....one of the great ones of all times. And we are alive at the same time as him. They'll be "discovering" Beatles songs 20, 40, 80 years from now...
It is a song of American (USA) Civil Rights and the culmination of decades of struggle. The "Black bird" is a young Afro-American woman who finally has the rights of Euro-Americans, but as we know it was never quite fulfilled. "Bird" is English slang for "young woman."
It's amazing how The Beatles have so many great songs. How can one band have 3 composers with such great songs? This is something we will never ever come across again.
When they were touring, they were given a week off to write an entire album!! I heard an interview in which Paul said that each and every time that he and John sat down to write, they wrote a song! I loved their songs that each one was different from the others. Most group’s start sounding a like after a while. Not the Beatles! What a bunch of musical geniuses!
Thanks for sharing this. So great to hear a fantastic recording with Paul maintaining the original structure. Personally this has to be one of the best songs i've ever heard, musically, lyrically and the melody.. timeless and perfect.
I've just been listening to other versions. It's amazing that good performers don't make "musical sense" out of if the way Paul does. They sound like mush, where Paul's simplicity makes it musically clear.
They're cover versions. Each person brings something slightly different to a song. I'm not a massive fan of the way he does it here, it's all personal preference. One thing is for sure, it's been done by better singers. I'd say many people are perfectly capable of making 'musical sense' out of it, and have.
It's perfection...even down to the lack of squeaky guitar strings...it's just a masterclass...man...what a total legend of a musician...how someone becomes like this I have no idea...I lifetime of devotion perhaps??
