Yeah, it was way easier to find friends back when I got started in 2004 or 05. Still possible now, but it's a lot harder, especially because there's the ever-present worry of "Oh no, I hope this artist doesn't think I'm just trying to get free art!" This applies even if you're an artist yourself, though being an artist can make things easier.

You could be looking for furry friends in the wrong place and everyone just happens to be bronies or something.
Of all places, I have found that my most long lasting relationships within the fandom have come from people that I met outside of it, in general. One was my boss had a job I had right out of high school, one was a kid that I went to fourth and fifth grade with, and we reconnected years later within the fandom. Within the fandom, I’ve made a lot of friends through, of all things, gaming and TV shows. Not all of those friends have stuck around, but I’m glad those relationships happened. I like your idea of mini fandom’s, and I think it works well.

How to make friends. 1. Don't smell bad. 2. Respect personal space. 3. Look away from your phone screen for more than 5 nanoseconds. 4. Try talking to people. 5. Stay away from sex jokes. (Aka...try not to be creepy) 6. Don't expect to make friends right away. It can be difficult to find friends for some people. Hence why I have no friends myself. (Plus, working and only attending one furry convention doesn't help in my situation, to be fair.) But patience is a virtue. Also, getting older can make it harder to meet friends. A situation I also face. I'm not exactly 20 years old anymore. So if you are older, it can be harder to relate to a somewhat younger crowd. Just be outgoing and respectful, though. Try to have fun if you go to conventions or meet-ups. Unfortunately, I didn't meet any friends when I went to Midwest Fur Fest. But I had fun taking pictures and at least talking with random people and fursuiters nonetheless. I even talked to one fursuiter who actually worked for the railroad. We had quite a conversation about trains, of all things. 🙂
You can even go more niche too. I like specifically classic cars and am an analog videographer, old skool film photographer, etc. the way i do these things doesn't mesh well with the way that modern cars/subaru furs, 4k digital photography and videography furs do their thing. Its a long story i'll make a tape about one of these days. But my point is i've been able to find other furs who dig what i dig so even if you're into something you're worried you won't find anyone into, you will. just give it time. And in the meantime, joining in on something more "popular" and giving it your own take isn't a bad way to survey the crowd while doing a version of the hanky code.

Good tips, but I've been looking around for a while and I still can't seem to find my tribe around here. As someone with no particular interest in fursonas, fursuiting, or kink culture, I'm always dancing around the edges of the fandom looking for the entrance without ever finding that mini fandom that matches my personal tastes and interests. I mostly just end up joining discord servers of artists I like, which is nice, but never seems to scratch that itch for a more closely-knit community
You know some part of me what’s to take that advice, and wants to be part of that. But another part is to nervous and kinda knows that it might be a waste of time with all the extra bits of nuance evolved.
A good call since by the theory of Dunbar's Number such a large group makes one scared of trying to care about all of them, it's easier to digest and find the ones you really like in smaller groupings, such as board games/tabletop, video games, writers and such (those are the ones I found most mine in).
That makes sense, although since I am very interested in kingdom hearts because it is one of the best franchises I know, I can't exactly imagine finding people or more importantly people who live nearby because I can't travel to another country, even if I wanted to.

I think a big part of it is being a furry isn't just for "nerds" anymore. You can come from any walk of life and join the fandom, but because of that, not everyone can bond over things that only the nerds cared for and understood.

Got your channel recommended by yt, as I follow a few channels. As a furry who's been in the fandom since the early 2ks and knew a little the fandom even before I knew what it was called, does make it very hard to find friends in the fandom. Almost left after a local met up at a local mall, one who invited me, barely talked to me at all, his friend who came talked to me more. Left that day sorta deflated. As an older furry it makes it very hard to find friends and were I live in south Colorado even worse and furries are far and few.

I just don’t really feel like I can relate to anyone aside from furry related things. I feel you. It’s almost like being on the outside looking in. There never seems to be a way to connect or opportunities to get to know people very well when everyone already has their friends. That’s why I don’t consider myself a furry. I like watching the content and looking at the art and all that but I don’t think I’d be able to find my place in all that. I play piano and have complete different artstyles depending on if its digital or on normal paper. On paper i draw my fursona more realistic than on my ipad. On ipad i have a much more cartoony style (my profile picture being an example)
