      @realjesterbell No, but I am out of my state visiting family and quite honestly none of these films appealed to them( to be fair, it’s an older crowd and none really like genre entertainment). Still, anyone who says you’re making up the box office are inhaling some strong copium. It’s awful. The thing is that what makes these so bad is not just the inflated budgets, but really Hollywood being out of touch with audiences. Outside some outliers like Dune or even Deadpool, notice how all these films are past IP that plenty of Gen Z and younger crowds aren’t into? When you combine that with expensive tickets, and streaming/ alternative consumption; it’s a recipe for disaster. Unlike what TV did to Hollywood back in the day. All in all, it’s just sad to see.

    I live in a rural area so the nearest theater is about 4 towns away. Paying the gas money, ticket prices, and food wasn't exactly cheap. Still, we used to go to the movies as often as we could because it was worth it as a family outing. As the big movie quality kept decreasing, it dropped from being a 5-6 person trip to a 3-2 person trip and then no trip at all. It felt more and more like a rip off so we started watching movies at home. If it sucks, at least we didn't drive 50 miles away to see it suck

    I think The Fall Guy was making about as much as you’d expect it to make at the box office. Kind of wild to think an action RomCom was going to be some sort of big blockbuster. They should’ve cut WAY down on the special effects budget a because the level of high quality CGI in the movie scenes didn’t really feel necessary. And getting a certain celebrity cameo in there probably didn’t help as well.

They often only have cinema releases of a few weeks at most, and if you happen to beef busy those weeks, tough. Really wanted to see the Holdovers and Milady in the cinema, but they got such small releases in gut uk I couldn't. Yet looked what happened with Godzilla minus one which started with a small release but built on the word of mouth to make a lot of money.

    Have to disagree, the theater experience amounts to crazy high prices for mediocre food and the luxury of siting on chairs that probably haven’t been cleaned since Titanic came out. Going to the movies used to be affordable and if a film doesn’t pull interest during the release period, it’s not worthwhile. Makes no difference if its out 1 month later or 6-8 months later on streaming or physical media

Plus, it makes you go outside instead of staying home. There’s just nothing like watching a movie at the theater imo and I find it sad that people are becoming disenchanted by them. Not that I don’t understand it but I’m worried it’ll cause movie theaters to disappear. Well that’s a darn shame. I will go see Furiosa but I’m surprised that it had a weak opening weekend on Memorial Day and also did not make as much as Mad Max: Fury Road. In fact, the opening numbers for Furiosa is almost the same as Casper in 1995 even though Casper is still commercial success despite mixed reviews from critics. Apparently, even that new Garfield movie also had a weak opening weekend on this year’s Memorial Day though it may have a chance to grossed more than its budget. Unfortunately, both Furiosa and The Garfield Movie are not in the same level as Mission Impossible 1 and 2, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor, Bruce Almighty, The Day After Tomorrow, Madagascar, X-Men 3: The Last Stand, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Night at the Museum 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Men in Black 3, Fast and Furious 6, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, Aladdin (2019), A Quiet Place part 2, and Top Gun Maverick where those summer blockbusters released on Memorial Day have a big, strong, and successful opening weekend.

    I agree with the point that Ryan Gosling isn't that kind of movie star. He's an A-Lister for sure, but that's different from being a singular box office draw. Same with Anya Taylor Joy. Its not like she got everyone to turn out for The Menu. But that isn't to say they can't be (people loved Queens Gambit), it's just that the idea Hollywood doesn't have movie stars anymore (in the traditional sense) is TRUE, and it may take flops like these for people to finally see that.
    It's easy to forget that without Barbie and Oppenheimer, everything else was failing last summer too.
    Superhero movies and franchise films were keeping the lights on in Hollywood, and as public interest in these wanes, there's going to be a bit of a "detox" period, and a lot more under-performing blockbusters, until studios can figure out their next move. Change the way they spend, change the way they market, elevate new stars instead of IPs and for pete's sake, improve the writing. Progressivism has made storytelling worse, the average Joe can tell, and they've lost trust in Hollywood.
    Is Fall Guy good? Is Furiosa good? I didn't go to either because I wasn't sure, and didn't feel like plopping money down to take the risk. Hearing that they are good is cool, but that's where we're at now. I'm fine waiting on word of mouth. That's bad for Hollywood because they need people going on blind faith.

    The studio system is just responding to consumer choice… the shift to primarily relying on IP is because general audiences go to films based on IP.
    Only 4 of the 50 highest grossing films are not based on IP.
    Also… the billion dollar film is a new phenomenon and is not a measure of the film industry’s health… in fact it’s a symptom of its sickness… Fury Road was a huge success.
    In 2015 we hadn’t reach the state when the majority of films studio put out bombed… in 2015 it was huge news when a movie was an out and out bomb… in 2015 the film in 200th place made 24million… in 2023 200th place made 8 thousand.
    The consumer has moved on from Cinema… its content now, and before the entire system crashed to the ground you will continue too have dead cat bounces… Deadpool Wolverine will likely hit 1-2 billion… but its not because Cinema is still relevant, meanwhile A24 and Neon will continue to put out fantastic film after fantastic film that essentially no one will go to and people will continue to decry its all about quality… when its not.
    Corporations were the gun, the audience pulled the trigger… streaming was the bullet.

    • @Vitaphone
      @Vitaphone 4 месяца назад +1

      FYI: If no one goes in opening weeks of a film it makes total sense capitalize on all the marketing for the theatrical and convert that over to VOD sales... being as there is essentially little money in the direct to consumer market with physical being dead at this point with last years biggest selling title grossing 6.5 million (not including production, distribution and the retailers cut).
      It makes sense that trying to get consumers to purchase when the film is still in the conversation…. I know it’s fun to think the average person understands how best to monetize a product, but the average consumer not only doesn’t look at the actual number, but they also have no experience nor anything riding on arm chair advise.

      If you only give audiences one kind of thing, then of course they’re only going to want more of that one kind of thing. It’s not that these IP based movies are what consumers really really want, it’s that movie studios have conditioned audiences to only see IP based movies and not anything original. Just imagine if the studios actually pushed more original ideas, then maybe we’d have better box office results.

    • @Vitaphone
      @Vitaphone 3 месяца назад

      Maybe you missed that 4 out of 50 of the highest grossing films are original… the amount of films EVERY year are original.
      The consumer can complain all they want about IP based films, but it’s an empty complaint when you look at reality.

  • @alexburns1330

    Honestly, It seems Hollywood is finding it harder and harder to figure out what type of movies audience members and film fans want to see on the big screen due to so many films flopping at the box office. While I do agree a part of that comes from what I like to call the "bringing back nostalgia gravy train" and relying way too much on old nostalgic properties and IP's from the past, I do find it frustrating that even when Hollywood pumps out something that's not based on any pre-existing story, it still flops anyway. Granted I also understand factors like Hollywood not giving more original ideas enough theater screenings, as I'm sure that's a reason why original IP's flop. Then there's other factors like the long term effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Hollywood Writers Strike Event. I just hope that movie theaters can survive for at least a handful of more years down the road, as like many others, I love going to the theater and seeing films on the big screen. That being said though, we will see what happens regarding when or if movie theaters go extinct.

      If you break a habit, it doesn't snap back into place. And I wonder if there's a longer malaise. Maybe I'm just old, but thinking about films, I don't know what would produce some level of excitement. If you've taken rapid editing and postmodern recombinations as far as you can, then what do you do next that makes people's hearts go pitter-patter? If they got rid of the CGI, then maybe a film might be more impactful at a visceral level. Themes could maybe improve resonance. Good cinema for me is rapturous. I don't think Hollywood has the imagination to present strange new vivid worlds that aren't politically preprocessed.

    I see people don't understand how movies breaking even/being successful works. It's not just the budget they need to make back. You double the budget and add a bit on. Take Garfield for example, has a 60 mill budget so therefore it needs to make about 150 mill give or take some to break even. 90 mil as it stands isn't a success nor breaks even.
    Also not sure if I'm going to see anything in June but July and August I will be. Kicking off with Deadpool and Wolverine and then Twisters.
