- Lens Review of the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 12mm f1 4 ASPH Lens for Micro 4/3 with inspirations and photographs created on the Lumix G9 and Lumix GH5.
Join me in the art studio today as I share thoughts, ideas, and photographs taken on Lumix cameras using the Leica 12mm 1.4 lens. This is one of my favorite lenses in my camera bag for low light photography and when I need to have tight depth of field even when there is plenty of light. Of course this lens works on Olympus m43 systems as well.

Love these reviews where the focus is on the artistic use of gear, not just the technical details.
Cool thanks Jaffar... Thanks for letting me know we are moving in the right direction.
Exactly the lens I needed! I thought the 25 1.4 was great but it's not wide enough for my style of photography, this one is perfect!
Alexandre Beaudoin Yeah that 12 is sweet! One of my top go to lenses for sure
Pairing this with the G9, is it good for hand-held video? I hear it has lack of tracking AF and body stabilization which worries me since the 15mm 1.7 has fast AF and stabilization
I think it's a great combo for handled video. But, you likely will be working in manual focus on Lumix for video on any lens. Photographically the AF is remarkable, especially in low light compared to the competition of every full frame brand out there. M43 is just stellar on the AF front for stills. But, video wise Lumix is best suited for manual AF. That said, due to the small size and light weight of M43, pulling focus manually is much.... MUCH easier than when you are hand holding a full frame system.
Hi. Love the pics as always. Do you see a difference in IQ between this and the Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4 zoom, or is the benefit simply in having a larger maximum aperture? Thx in advance Rich
Perfect review. Exactly what I needed to hear to allay any apprehension about getting this lens for my arsenal.
Ron Lai Cool Ron... Thanks for joining us and chiming in.
I rented this for a night portrait session last year on my Olympus. It was wonderful to have that 1.4 light!!
Yeah really nice to be able to push the envelope of light with this lens for sure. Thanks for chiming in!
Together In Style The next m4/3 lens I want you to review? The 10-25 F1.7!!! Not out yet I know, but pretty much going to be an instant buy I think. I’m getting an S1, so I guess they can wait on the release and save my bank balance. :)
@@stevevansak7324 No doubt... That replaces the 12mm and 25mm plus all the extras in between. So, while it looks bigger, I suppose it's a balance.
great video im looking at buying this lens even though i have a 12-60mm for nightscape photography and increased sharpness of images
Cool... Yes the 12-60 is a great all around lens. You'll love the 12 f/1.4 for nightscape and low light work. One of my favorites for sure.
How does the 12-60 cope with night or low light?
I am selling my panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 ii, not sure if I should go for this Leica 12mm f/1.4 or go for the wider leica 8-18mm. I will be using this for photo and video on the G9. Might start doing some vlogs too. What do you think?
BandOfBros That’s a toughy... The 1.4 opens up the doors to low light indoor situations. The 8-18 opens the door to turning the camera around on yourself on the move when vlogging. No perfect answer here as both are soo unique in purpose. Let us all know what you do and your reasoning.
Loving your content. I'm learning a ton. Not to be negative, but I'm not a big fan of your audio. I'm guessing your studio is open and without sound treatment. I don't know where you're mic is placed, but I think if you had a boom mic over your head, or a lavalier mic it would take down that reverb quite bit. Don't hate me...just a suggestion. I really like your channel a lot.
Thanks Art for the kind side of the comment. Curious as to what you are listening on as I am running a high end tram mic taped to my chest with a Rode video mic pro wireless system, so it should be deep and clean with very little reverb. Could it be something off on your end? Always appreciate feedback, so thanks either way.
@@artistcharlesmaring
@@artistcharlesmaring Reverb was probably not the right word. Boom might be the right word. There's a big "open" sound like you were talking through a megaphone or in a warehouse. I also have to turn my levels down quite a bit compared to other youtube videos. I listen with a nice pair of Sennheiser earphones plugged into a Focusrite audio interface. Obviously, you have topnotch equipment. I'd bet if you dropped your levels a bit, you'd get better results. Regardless, I'm a big fan...so carry on, and forgive the intrusion.
@@artjohnson01 No... It's actually good to hear that. I added a compressor, which boosts things a bit. I bet it is sending over the top. It is a wide open space, and I was listening through studio monitors. Then I put on headphones and could def hear a bit of reverb shining through. Appreciate your mentioning it. Something I can work on.
Top video ! Merci beaucoup. ;))
I haven't bought the 12mm yet, but it is on the list. At the moment I have been playing with a few vintage primes and going the full manual route (using peaking and magnification to aid with focus). Some of the old Soviet lenses have been interesting and actually useful for video (non-click aperture), if you like the effect the lenses give you (a very subjective subject). Also some of the experimental lenses out there have unique features. Maybe a look at some of those would be a fun diversion over the coming year or so?
Yeah.. I've seen a bunch of people using vintage lenses for interesting effects. Def would like to play around with some of those ideas.
