Wonderful. Being 67, I grew up with the Moody Blues and Jimi Hendrix. Loved the way Mike drops into "Smoke on the water" to demonstrate a bass line. Eddie Van Halen's Jump has been one of my favourite songs for many years, so I searched out Mike's full length version on RUclips. Fabulous
Thank You, Mike, for choosing "All Along The Watchtower" to harp on. (Pun intended!) Hearing these chords brought me to tears, of course also because they bring back memories of Michael Hedges, whom I had the privilege to meet in 1988, and whose music has been with me ever since. And remember, it's Lulo's 60th birthday today! And thanks to Rick for presenting this incredible young man to an audience maybe a little wider than just guitar-nerdistan.

Rick, This was an enjoyable Rick Beato Interview. I saw Mike (with Justin Hayward) in Bristol a few years ago (2018?) and was blown away with his opening set. After seeing Mike, I never tell people that I can play the guitar. Mike Dawes plays the guitar and what Mike does is NOT what I do ! Best part of the interview is when you are seen shaking your head in amazment/disbelief ("I cannot imagine how you would accomplish that").... Even a proper guitarist can be amazed by Mike Dawes' talent & ingenuity. Leo Kottke was my No.1 Accoustic guitarist until I saw Mike Dawes. They both have the ability to make the audience think there's more than one person creating that sound/music.
There's half an hour I wish could have gone on for another 2 hours! Great interview (as always) Rick and Mike's playing always feels so intimate. Amazing technique but not too 'showy', every thing he does has a place in, and is integral to, the tune to enhance his interpretation and isn't added "just because he can". A very genuine guy who obviously works hard at his craft yet (and as an ex-pat Brit myself can identify with the self- deprecating humour) still manages to have a laugh at himself .
Another GREAT video, Rick. I thoroughly enjoyed your interaction with Mike and of course, hearing Mike play and explain his music. WOW! Thank you both! :-)
I remember hearing Aerial Boundaries for the first time and having my mind blown. Then decades later seeing TE CGP in concert and once again mind blown. Mike Dawes takes it another incredible, mind-blowing level of artistry. Mike's song Encomium is the best thing I've ever heard played on a acoustic guitar. Huge fan of Mike and a huge fan of Rick Beato for bringing incredible content to the masses...
Yyeess! Tommy is the absolute tops. The fact that Dawes and Emmanuel has shared the stage SPEAKS VOLUMES! Two stellar players with first rate chops! ☝️
I can honestly say that I have learned WAY more about music by watching Rick's channel for about a year, than I have in the previous 45 years! Way to go, Rick and way to go Mike! Mike has really dedicated himself into expanding playing the guitar creatively! Of course, leave it to Rick to get this out there! Thanks guys!
I first heard Dawes and Allen on Tonewood Amp doing a cover of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. I was memorized!!!! Watching them play together was a privilege and my hubby and I wake up to it every morning... it is now our alarm song. I feel that way every single time I watch Mike Dawes play...mesmerized and privileged.
What a musician. Geez. I'm a big Michael Hedges fan. I was lamenting to myself just the other day that we never got to hear what Hedges was going to do over the decades because he died so young. Now, there's this. Almost like a reincarnation of Michael Hedges. Fantastic.
Mike, genius! Please (please!) do not stop banging on your guitar. I was amazing to see and hear you play, and inspirational to listen to how your composition process works.
I am delighted that the evolution of guitar technique has become acoustic again. Tárrega is smiling 😉 at Hedges, Reed, Emmanuel, Dawes etc. I'm a conventional classical and Jazz guitarist who is not a snob. I admire such players who can approach solo guitar performance in such a nuanced and inventive manner. My heroes are Joe Pass and John Williams/David Russell.
I first heard Hedges in 1984. Dawes' respect and acknowledgement is fantastic. these techniques have long been part of my vocabulary. to see this school of fingerstyle I love so much continue to be expanded by Mike, and Andy and Don just warms my heart.
Mike has an incredible musical brain and stunning technique. I've tried learning a few of his songs (though they are really way out of my league) and the subtle detail in them and the precision with which he performs them just blows me away. Just attempting to play them has really made me love playing again. So thanks Mike!
_Keep_ banging on the guitar! ;) No, really, just beautiful. And I so appreciate your taking the time to show what you are doing so those of us at varying miles behind you can try to learn and find some level of application. And all of us can benefit as listeners, able to better appreciate how many things you're doing at once to create such beautiful sound for us to enjoy.
Mike and Tommy Emmanuel together in the studio with you would be awesome. Can I also just say that I am not a musician - not even close - but this is my favourite channel and I now appreciate the music that I listen to 1000x more.
Absolutely fantastic! I'm a long time Moody Blues fan who continues to follow Justin Hayward via the internet. I have seen several of Mr. Hayward's shows with Mike Dawes in accompaniment. Really, really good. Thank you both for this wonderful video. All the best to you both.
@@artrandy In the early 1960s, a British pop star named Marty Wilde hired a young guitarist to fill out his small touring band. His name was Justin Hayward. He didn't stay long as he had bigger and better things to come.
@@peterl3282 But I would just make the observation that Mike's been playing in Justin's band for 8 years now, excluding lockdown periods, and in a similar period (7 years), Justin Hayward had joined up with Marty Wilde, signed a bad publishing deal with Lonnie Donegan, taken Donegan to court over it and lost, and recorded the Moody Blues core 7. Clearly there were greater pressures in the sixties for Justin to succeed. Or maybe Mike just does not have that 'burning ambition'. I love many of the fruits of over ambitious musicians, but personally speaking, I wouldn't want to stand too close to them, in case I spontaneously combust. Mike is pretty self assured, and obviously he's doing alright financially, so maybe he has a more relaxed attitude to fame and the rewards it might bring...........
Another great video! Mike Dawes is absolutely amazing. It was great that he brought up Michael Hedges. I saw Hedges play one of his last gigs at The Bottom Line in Manhattan. His performance was electrifying! At the end of one song, Ritual Dance maybe, a guy jumped out of his seat like a rocket and yelled because he was so excited. We all felt the same way.
Damn. That was beautiful. Beethoven called the guitar "a little orchestra", Mike really makes that happen. And his sound is anything but "little". Thanks, yet again, Rick!
Shamed to admit I'd never heard of Mike before - brilliant arrangements, and I'm so entirely jealous of those "spider fingers"! Thanks Rick - you've been my lifeline to some amazing talent and beautifully artistic musicians that I've missed over the last couple decades. I grew up in awe of guys like Yngwie, Al DiMeola, Greg Howe, Jason Becker, Vai, Satriani, and a whole slew of other shredders and pure guitarists, but I fell away from it. Since I came across your channel, I've heard about Tosin, Tim Henson, Misha, Mike Dawes and along the way learned to truly appreciate some of the old greats before my time, like Joe Pass, and through it all I got to watch you looking like a kid in a candy store while you interviewed some of these people or talked about your favorites. I appreciate you Rick. I'm just one of many, I'm sure, to say thank you. Sincerely, thank you. You're a blessing to so many of us. Your joy, talent and knowledge comes through clear.
Thanks for mensioning Michael Hedges, he sort of invented this kind of playing or at least took it to another level. Michael is one of my absolute favorite guitarr heroes.
Mike is an amazing guitarist and the most humble musician I have ever met. Saw him post a Brian Gore's International Guitar Night at the High Line Ballroom NYC and, again, just chatted it up and suggested a few NYC venues to find other musicians which would be of interest. Success could not have happened to a nicer person. Love you, MIke!
Mike Dawes and his weird spider-fingers are nothing short of amazing. Helluva player! Also rather inspiring. Love his version of "All Along the Watchtower", and "Jump" almost brought me to tears. Thanks, Rick (AKA The Internet)!
Michael Hedges is one of my favorites Ariel Boundarys is one of His best. I see that you play with many of his styles I am glad to hear this interview.

I love when he says, this part is straight forward and easy...........sheez! Unbelievable muscian, and so down to earth and enjoyable to see his personality too. Mike is phenomenal!
I love it. A Mike Dawes version of a Michael Hedges version of a Jimi Hendrix version of a Bob Dylan song. I love love LOVE Hedges’ version, and I really like what Mike is doing with the song. How exciting to hear that he and Tommy will be touring the West Coast early next year. I’ll be planning to go!!
First time to see Mike Dawes here. What is great with Mr. Rick Beato is he features excellently superb guitarists, like X-Phil, among others. Now, it's Mike Dawes. Indeed, Mike is one of the most promising acoustic younger guitarists of the new era. His creativity, innovation, and basic fundamentals/concepts incorporated in a sort of a 1-man acoustic band are unique and awesome. Great interview with a superb young guitarist, Mr. Rick Beato!
Amazing guitarist. Great sense of humor. I was a huge fan of Michael Hedges back in the late 80s. A local friend Glenn Richardson was the first finger style guitarist that inspired me. Since Andy McKee and Candy Rat records have opened the doors for this beatiful guitar style, Mike Dawes is an amazing addition to this community.
Hedges was a force of nature. So much skill that will always be missed. Luckily we have his beautiful recordings as a testament to his greatness. RIP Hedges.
@@kipponi Are you the Rick Beato police? I think you got one too many trophies for participation. It wasn't a complaint, and I listened again and Micheal Hedges was mentioned. And he was in fact doing this 40 years ago so it's not new because of Mike Dawes. And just like many original trailblazers, Mike took Michael's r work and improved on it.
My first concert was going to see Tommy Emmanuel as he toured through regional Australia when I was 10 years old at the local cinema. He took down a movie-sized promotion poster and signed it for me. Mike is equally as amazing and inspiring and I really appreciate this interview.
I was taught guitar in the 90’s by one of the early pioneers of this style, an amazing human being called Eric Roche. If you don’t know him, definitely google him! He sadly left us early having been struck by cancer. He is someone who deserves a lot of recognition for his contribution to this style.
Wow. What an honour. I've heard Roche. Amazing player. I think he called his style 'violent acoustic' from memory. I didn't know he'd passed away. Very sad May he rest in peace.
@@jiros00 He was such a generous and lovely guy. I remember he would watch me running scales on my unplugged strat and say “wow, I wish I could do that!” because he was very much an acoustic guy. I’m thinking “you can’t be serious! You’re Eric Roche!” but he had a way of encouraging and seeing the best in everyone. It is so sad he’s gone as I am sure he had his best still in him.
@@socblue1844Sorry I didn’t mean to say “what about so and so” at all so my apologies for any misunderstanding. Mike Dawes is awesome and taken it to a whole new level. I’m just highlighting the history of his unique style and share some history that not many people know. I’m sure Mike Dawes would be the first person to honour the people who came before him and walked that path. I’m also sure Mike knows Eric’s work well as he mentions his name briefly at some point in the video. Mike if you are reading this feel free to chime in!
Mike Dawes is an amazing guitar player, but one thing I noticed about Michael's playing is that he attacked the guitar with such passion and fluidity. That's part of what separates him from the rest of us. I saw Michael live three times, once at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and then twice, two nights in a row in Mancos, Colorado in '96. I sat ten feet away from him in the front row and was absolutely blown away by his technique. I've never seen another like him since😥
I always wondered when I would hear another incredible genius player like Mike Hedges. I don’t think many people were exposed to Mike hedges. I was blown away when I watched this video. Not only is he a incredible musician but he seems like a really humble nice individual.

What a wonderful interview and performance. The mention of Michael Hedges prompted me to listen again to his CD's that I still own from the 80's. His death was a tragic loss to all music lovers. His albums Aerial Boundaries and Oracle are amazing performances. I am looking forward to hearing more amazing performances by Mike Dawes.
I think he’s super underrated, he has some of the craziest technical skill I’ve ever seen and he can create an entire band with just his guitar.. in terms of acoustic guitar he takes the cake if you ask me.
Absolute amazing and a very symphatic, feed on the ground person. Lucky me I saw him performing here in New Zealand with the Moody Blues icon, incredable performance. This guy has it without showing the people how to play behind the neck of his guitar. He is natural and an acid to watch
Such a great performance of All Along the Watchtower. I love all the subtle variety in the textures, so the chord progression doesn't sound the same twice. I really enjoyed this interview/performance.

Mike played a song with my nephew Jackson at Nashville NAMM at the Tonewood amp booth. It was moving. My nephew sang a John Mayer song. I’ll never forget it! Mike is a great person on top of being an amazing musician!
I discovered Mike's videos during the pandemic and he made me remember the time I saw Michael Hedges live back in the day on a Windham Hill tour... 1989-ish?... with my mom. The songs I distinctly remember him playing were All Along the Watchtower and Kiss by Prince. Mike's ERA album sounds amazing through studio monitors. So rich and dynamic. Great album to sit back, close your eyes, and just enjoy the experience.
What a player - constants chills during All Along The Watchtower and tears during Jump
Mike, genius! Please (please!) do not stop banging on your guitar. I was amazing to see and hear you play, and inspirational to listen to how your composition process works.
Mike is simply untouchable on the acoustic guitar. The combination of technique and creativity is simply unparalleled.
He's a great player but you obviously haven't heard Tommy Emmanuel 🤔😊
Mike Dawes what a GREAT guest to have on your RUclips Chanel. Loved the talk and sharing of info on finger style playing.
In the words of Rick Beato, this guy is phenomenally good
LOVE Mike Dawes!! Happy that he regularly recognizes Tommy Emmanuel as the greatest guitarist on earth. Together... they are dynamite. 😎🎸🎸👍
I'm very glad to hear him mention Michael Hedges in this long version of the interview, because it was missing in the truncated version.
He's a fantastic addition to Justin's little band, but how much longer Justin can keep hold of him, I don't know.........
I always learn so much! Never picked up a guitar, but these are fascinating for just getting more insight into music pieces
I hope You get to pick up a guitar . So much fun .
When talent and hard work combine you get amazing and you get Mike Dawes.
Did you ever see Vicente Amigos spider fingers?
You are a great interviewer, Rick. Also, great guest! Tanks for the treat!
Michael Hedges is one of my favorites Ariel Boundarys is one of His best. I see that you play with many of his styles I am glad to hear this interview.
Extraordinary video, thank you Rick Beato and Mikes Dawes! This video is 2 years old and today is Nov 29, 2023, I am seeing this for the 1st time! Yes, I am a subscriber.
I love the video I remember Michael Hedges and a guy named Preston Reid who also does percussive playing great stuff thanks again
I love when he says, this part is straight forward and easy...........sheez! Unbelievable muscian, and so down to earth and enjoyable to see his personality too. Mike is phenomenal!
When I heard him say this part is straight forward and easy I said that's what she said.
Rick Beato!
We saw Mike in Aberdeen, WA. in 2016 with Justin Hayward, bought his CD immediately. His style suits the Moody's songs very well.
His playing reminds me of Michael Hedges (RIP) from the 1980's. Aerial Boundaries is an incredible album.
Hedges was a force of nature. So much skill that will always be missed. Luckily we have his beautiful recordings as a testament to his greatness. RIP Hedges.
I was surprised Michael Hedges wasn't mentioned as well. He was doing this stuff 40 years ago.
@@greggacek1655 So you didn't watch this interview? Because they mentioned him. So why you even here? Complaining...
@@kiru_r But this video is about Mike Dawes! Why do people always go into whataboutism?
@@socblue1844Sorry I didn’t mean to say “what about so and so” at all so my apologies for any misunderstanding. Mike Dawes is awesome and taken it to a whole new level. I’m just highlighting the history of his unique style and share some history that not many people know. I’m sure Mike Dawes would be the first person to honour the people who came before him and walked that path. I’m also sure Mike knows Eric’s work well as he mentions his name briefly at some point in the video. Mike if you are reading this feel free to chime in!
Awesome!! Great to see you 2 hangin' out and noodling. Raw Dawes and Neato Beato ride again! ✌🤘🎸
Cool! Two of my favourites talking intelligent, thought provoking shop. Amazing playing as always Mike. It’s great to have unusual questions & moments of clarity. Thanks to you both,
I had the pleasure of seeing Mike with Justin several times. He is a joy to watch and is really nice guy!
That was absolutely amazing. Mike Dawes is a true artist.
I just want to say thank you to you both. Ty Rick for your hard work building this channel. Ty Mike for your hard work to achieve this kind of beautiful guitar work. Ty both for sharing your talent, appreciation for music, and humor.
Mike's playing is a lesson in humility for every guitar player.
How is his playing a lesson in humility?
@@T.R.U.T.H.. i meant cuz if you start getting big-headed about your playing, playing like his can put things into a diffefent perspective. that's all.
@@visitur4914 Aah ok I see now, just wasn't sure what you meant, thanks for the reply!
That's just beautiful...thank you for both the engaging and focused interview and the reciprocal delivery of talent and mastery all bundled up in an honest and humble demonstration
Fantastic stuff! Mike is superb, and Rick, your channel is amazing. Cheers!
Charming and gifted people. Can't get enough 😃
FANTASTIC interview! So awesome to see such a monster player be so humble. I'd love to see him and Tommy live. I'll be front row.
I think he’s super underrated, he has some of the craziest technical skill I’ve ever seen and he can create an entire band with just his guitar.. in terms of acoustic guitar he takes the cake if you ask me.
You might like to check out Sungha Jung also
Absolute amazing and a very symphatic, feed on the ground person. Lucky me I saw him performing here in New Zealand with the Moody Blues icon, incredable performance. This guy has it without showing the people how to play behind the neck of his guitar. He is natural and an acid to watch
Keep bringing great artists to our ears.
"Stop banging on your guitar" now that's funny! Thanks very much for sharing this video with us. Hope you have a wonderful week!
Such a great performance of All Along the Watchtower. I love all the subtle variety in the textures, so the chord progression doesn't sound the same twice. I really enjoyed this interview/performance.
Dawes is such an amazing player... Michael Hedges and Phil Keaggy also come to mind as some of the world's greatest Acoustic players.
Had the pleasure of meeting Mike last night at his show with Tommy Emanuel. Really nice guy and I purchased his live CD phenomenal guitar playing.
Live from the Double Planet. Everyone should hear it if you aren't already familiar with his Michael Hedges reference.
OMG.... how did i not know about Mike Dawes???? I must be living under a rock! Holy snikes..... being a huge HEDGES FAN, im happy to discover this!!!! Thanks guys!!!!?
Mike played a song with my nephew Jackson at Nashville NAMM at the Tonewood amp booth. It was moving. My nephew sang a John Mayer song. I’ll never forget it! Mike is a great person on top of being an amazing musician!
I discovered Mike's videos during the pandemic and he made me remember the time I saw Michael Hedges live back in the day on a Windham Hill tour... 1989-ish?... with my mom. The songs I distinctly remember him playing were All Along the Watchtower and Kiss by Prince. I'd never seen anyone play like him before and though I never listened to him intensely, the echo of it has stayed in my brain until today. Mike is such a delight to listen to!
What a lovely musician to have discovered in lockdown. I never heard of him before this (and need to explore!) but my kids discovered Sungha Jung who plays in a similar way
All that slapperty tapperty. Marvelous.
Thank you Rick for featuring this absolutely flawless talented gentleman what a treat I’m not sure but I might have caught him briefly at the NAMM a few years ago thanks again for your great channel I love it, keep ‘em coming!
Amazing talent & great interview!
This is awesome!! I love it when artists know and respect Rick like we all do.
