      Good afternoon Rome Parrilla;
      Thank you for posing a great question - I'll do my best to give you a useful perspective.
      There are several options I've seen used in lieu of leather for aylmeri; these tend to be "pleather" or lined-vinyl products of dubious manufacture, to say nothing of the photo-degradable characteristics attributable to such substances, (ie: the tendency of vinyl/plastic-based materials to become brittle or weak when exposed to long durations in sunlight, cold weather, etc).
      I _am_ aware of at least one product which has been tested reasonably extensively, and is said to have a near-indefinite 'shelf-life' as an alternative to leather anklets.
      The product is called "Biothane"; its reported as being a "high quality strapping material" employed in a wide variety of applications, (including certain medical applications).
      Western Sporting offers Biothane as one of its Falconry related products - you'll find the link here:
      www.westernsporting.com/FE5003B/biothane-rk-13-anklet-shaping-kit-custom-contoured-anklets.html
      While I _do_ have a small length of the product in my toolkit, I've never actually used it; when it arrived, it was narrower than I'd expected, and I was frankly uncomfortable with using it on my admittedly larger raptors.
      Depending on what your budget is for giving this a whirl, I imagine some Falconers would feel the price for the Biothane kit isn't unreasonable...at a personal level I'll be sticking with medium-heavy weight kangaroo leather for the foreseeable future.
      Hope you're enjoying a great week wherever you are - thanks again for allowing me to respond to a great question.
      Best,
      Jo

    Congratulations friends.
    With a little creativity I made my hawks the pihuelas or anklets since I have an acrylic paint and a captive, I designed some Mayan strokes and then painted them. They look great on my hawks anklets.
    regards

      I love the creativity, Papeleria! They just look beautiful with the painting. In the future if you don't have kangaroo leather for jesses and a leash, Jo has also mentioned using a thick mountain climbing rope is a good alternative. Best wishes to your companion and family! :) -Leah

    Very informative guys. I tend to treat my hawks anklets with Kochelene leather grease prior to fitting. This seems to help with the eyelets passing through and also keeps the leather supple. Keep up the good work.
    Best from Charlie in Scotland.

      Hello Charlie, thank you very much for spending your time with us! Very interesting, I took a quick wander over to Google and it seems like that's pretty popular for equestrian saddle care - certainly helpful in our situation too! Have a wonderful day, we look forward to having you back for another episode next Sunday :) -Leah

      Good afternoon Charlie;
      Thank you for the suggestion - I'll definitely give that a whirl at some point.
      I've also used super-glue a few times, (just to keep the eyelet in place whilst crimping everything together), and found it to be that useful "third hand" we're all grateful for in such circumstances. :0)
      Thank you for stopping-in - have a great week.
      Best,
      Jo

    Hello! I found your channel after a Red-tail Hawk has made her home home on our property where she spends much of her time chasing rabbits! I absolutely love watching her, and we’ve seen an abundance of eagles near our location in the state of Michigan too. My hobby is slingshot Target shooting/hunting which focuses on the same quarry Red-tails go after! In slingshot shooting we use kangaroo leather also for its durability in making pouches, but I’ve seen people use templates to cut their leather pouches quickly which the templates vary in different sizes!
    I love your videos! Hopefully one day I will become an apprentice and trap a baby of the bird that got me interested in falconry! Best of wishes, keep up the good work 👍

      Good evening Tri Kast;
      Thank you so much stopping by the channel - we've got some great episodes which we'll be sharing over the coming weeks, and 'Mohave', our big Red Tail, will feature prominently.
      We also have a pair of resident Red Tails who raise youngsters every year at Falcon's Rest - if I can capture some footage of them in the springtime (when they return from their winter migration), I'll be sure to put an episode up for you and other RT enthusiasts to have a look-see.
      So cool to hear about your unique style of hunting - I've got a "pro" wrist-fitted slingshot, though I confess I'm only using the clay shot for target practice in my spare time, (insert hysterical laughter here...I _rarely_ have any spare time!).
      Please let your friends and family know about us - I hope we'll see you again soon!
      Best,
      Jo

      Hi there Clinton;
      Thanks for stopping in to the channel - you can _definitely_ purchase aylmeri for your eagle through several Falconry-supply vendors.
      One of our favourites is Westweald Falconry in the UK - here's the link to their website:

      Another great team are the folks over at Mike's Falconry Supplies:

    • @TheFalconLady
      @TheFalconLady  4 года назад +1

      That would be interesting to try! I don't believe Jo has made her own gloves (I could be wrong!), there are so many talented leather makers creating really great gloves. I will add it to the list if we feel like playing around with that! For patterns, Google and falconry books will be your best friend, I know that Falconry and Hawking by Phillip Glasier has a pattern in his book. Good luck Mario, and we would love to see any gloves you create! :) -leah

    Since I work alone ,I will pre spread the grommet just a little a head of time so it just fits over with a little pressure, so when the bird moves it stays on. if you spread the grommet to much, you may have too start all over again, unless you can pull anklets apart, you can even spread grommets not on the anklets leather that way if you opened to much, all you wasted is a grommet set. This way once you squeeze the anklet and grommets on the birds leg their staying there. Then use the setter to complete the spread. Make sense?,

      I believe in you, Mike! It just takes a little time, patience and it's honestly way easier than it looks. If you're just starting out, I would practice a couple anklets on some old leather you don't really care about. Feel free to send us photos of anything you make, or even questions - good luck! :) -Leah

      @@TheFalconLady thanks for the feedback.you both have answered my comments gracefully before.To be honest I am not officially a falconer and have not attempted to make my own falconry equip either.I am an aspiring falconer.I was first introduced to falconry by a television series called lassie from the 60's,but it was on Nickelodeon in the late 80's.A little boy named Timmy was lassies owner in the TV series. Timmy had a cousin or friend in that episode that was a cadet in the United States Air Force Academy.The Peregrine Falcon is still the official mascot of the USAF Academy .I am 43 years old now.i have loved birds of prey and the sport of falconry ever since.i just never had the opportunity to be a falconer. If I cant dedicate a large portion of my life to falconry I won't do it. I was blessed to find yours and other channels about falconry on you tube.i study birds of prey and falconry videos at least 3 hours a day..I hope to be ready soon to take and pass my falconry exam so I can live my dream.god willing.Thanks. I cant wait for more videos.

    • @TheFalconLady
      @TheFalconLady  4 года назад

      Good evening L DRAGO;
      There's an excellent hood-making book titled "Hoods, Hooding, & Hoodmaking" by James West Nelson I've got a feeling you'll absolutely love.
      Westweald Falconry sells some magnificent hoods if you're needing something straight away, and they are excellent folks to do business with.
