- This is the fourth video in my tutorial series for the BAe-146 for X-Plane 11, by JustFlight and Thranda Design. In this video we are covering descent, approach, and landing procedures. We also cover shutdown of the aircraft at the end of the flight.
The instrument approach procedure used in this video is the ILS Y Rwy 12 approach into Missoula airport (KMSO), which can be found here:
skyvector.com/...
The Speedbrakes button that I set up on my joystick is X-Plane's default command:
"sim/flight_controls/speed_brakes_toggle".
Rules of thumb for descent planning:
How to figure out how many miles out you need to begin your descent:
Take the number of thousands of feet you need to descend, times 3. In this video we needed to descend 16,000 feet, so: 16 x 3 = 48nm. So we began our descent 48 nm before the waypoint "NEGOE".
How to figure out the required rate of descent:
Take your groundspeed (in knots) times 5. In this video we were doing about 400 knots groundspeed, so: 400 x 5 = 2000 feet per minute.
Groundspeed will slow down as we descend, so I set about 1,700 feet per minute.
The BAe-146 is now available on JustFlight's website, here:

@joseph noe you are amazing! The best tutorials ever! Iwatched the whole series and I learnt so much about this great aircraft.
Well done! Thank you so much. It is fun to fly.
Wonderful tutorial, love the whole series, cant wait for the next one. This truly is a study level aircraft!
Your flight and approach are so smooth. Not your handling or frame rate, but the actual plane. My plane is so shaky, like it has perpetual turbulence.
Nice landing!
Thanks! I'd like to claim they're always like that, but... :P
@@josephnoe2956 gosh you're so humble
excellent
hello there, i've tried to execute an ILS approach but even if after have shown your videos i'm not able to do that. What is the correct way to do it?
One question and one note.
1 : Why open the speedbrake on the final ? Doesn't seem like the engines have a long spool time or narrow power band that'd require the brake to be able to run them high.
2 : To make smooth turns I turn before the HSI/RBI show I've crossed the VOR, using 1NM=6000ft of slant range to guesstimate the vertical distance from the beacon and the speed on the right of the DME readout falling away as I near the VOR.
Good question (and good note!)
1. For most normal landings it's not necessary. It just helps bleed off the excess speed from Vapp to Vref, especially if you're carrying an extra 5 or 10 knots for windy conditions. But it can be necessary for steep approaches, and gives the pilot an extra tool for controlling airspeed on short final.
2. As I'm sure you noticed, I was distracted and completely forgot to actually turn the plane as I crossed the VOR. :P The rule of thumb you posted is indeed a very good one!
Nice landing. Is it unreasonable to try to just hand-fly this jet? I find it extremely squirrely to hand fly and I'm always fighting pitch oscillation.
Hi, I‘ve got the problem that the Engine does not shutdown after cutoff the fuel at the thrustlevers according to the checklist.
XP 11 on Mac… got a Idea?
Thx for the Great Tutorials!
No sids show on my Fmc- says data link not available. Any ideas?
Which sync button are you pressing when you pitch your plane?
It is X-Plane's "Control Wheel Steering" button. I've detailed that in the Taxi/Takeoff/Climb tutorial, here: ruclips.net/video/WtqRS5MHgYQ/видео.html
Swiss001 would just slam it to the ground
