🔥🔥🔥MORE ON BATTING EXPLANATION➡ Imagine the quilt sandwich in your mind (a traditional quilt sandwich)....lay the backing wrong side up....then lay the batting with the holes facing up...then lay the quilt top right side facing up....When you free motion quilt or quilt the sandwich together ...the pretty side/quilt top facing up... your needle is going in quilt top through the path of the holes then through the backing...Hope that helps✅
You're welcome Cathy...The needle punched batting is the one to keep an eye on....as some battings don't matter which side you quilt on✅ I think the majority of us quilt with needle punched batting🤩
Great quilting tips! Really liked the testing of the batting with a needle. Also liked your multi-colored thread that you FMQ'd with. While mistakes might show up with darker thread, your quilt is still very beautiful, very colorful, and a very happy quilt. If anyone points out your mistakes, tell them to grab the quilt they made so you can point out their mistakes, too!!! 😉 Another great video, Tracy!
I liked that you quilted the top with batting and then attached the backing. I have to try this when free motioning a larger quilt top. It will help to move the quilt around without the bulk of the backing too!! Brilliant!!
A good quilter always loves good tips. No matter how long we sew and quilt, there is still much to be learned. I love how you stepped out of your comfort box and went for the colorful quilting thread to finish. Drawing the corners…GENIUS! A Frixion pen would be just the thing if you’re pressing afterwards or a pen with blue wash-out ink. Anybody know how to remove tailor’s chalk? Thanks again for great tips as well as a well-produced video that moves right along. 😊
Magic Eraser works and so does a wet wipe... I would get the unscented kind. Or wait till you're done sewing and put it in the wash, then take a soft brush to it. You can add vinegar to the wash I heard that helps too.
Thank you, The Sewing Channel, Peg Handel, and Katee. I will try them all! I was sure there was a simple solution because tailor’s chalk has been around for so long. People wouldn’t use it if there was no way to remove it. I made a bunch of big Christmas stockings but first quilted the fabric. I used tailor’s chalk to draw straight lines. A Christmas stocking isn’t frequently washed, but I will pass on your ideas to the recipient. I did try unscented baby wipes which minimized the lines. Next time I will know a better way to quilt fabric without having to draw a bunch of lines.
I loved the pointer about pressing the red edge the wrong direction... Of course, you would take the time to correct the problem. And your accuracy with your triangle points! Excellent! 😘
Thank you @RedDogMamaHD❣️ Thank you for noticing my points on this quilt....I actually realized after I finished piecing ....that my piecing has gotten so much better since I first started quilting 🎉
I really love the tip about pressing a pin into the batting to tell which side is front and which side is back. Also, I recently did the quilting on top and batting only and then attached the backing pretty much the way you did, and it was a game changer for me! Much less shifting with only 2 layers to start with and the backing felt much smoother without all the decorative quilting stitches, so nice to see someone else doing it this way!
Ohh🎉🎉🎉 it's like this video was custom made for me!! I needed the thread idea for a quilt made of some nine blocks and I have a huge tumbler quilt made of Halloween fabric that I don't need any stitches on top! Thanks SO MUCH!!!
Hello! I am putting together a half square triangle quilt. I hadn't put any thought into how I would like it quilted, but I love how you quilted yours. It does really made the triangles pop. Thank you for sharing your work and for teaching us how.
I just happened onto your tutorial today and learned about the batting having a wrong side and right side which I've never known this before. Thank you for sharing!
I made a quilt for my parents RV. Their bed is a King short so I put borders on the sides only. I did quilt as you go and had sashing around each block so it looks like a small border on top and bottom.
That's a great Quilt. It reminds me of my Mother when she made one like that. She went to the same store for the material and the white thing that's the warm part. She put a back on that would be different from the front.
Flower, you're quilt is unique to you, and it is a one off, which we all make every time we craft. If someone notices any unique places, then they are not a friend. The coloured thread looked just beautiful with your feathers( i think that is what they are called, but i'm just on my 2nd quilt so please don't quote me) and all the beauty that it added to your gorgeous quilt. It has all the colours of the rainbow in it and this is definitely a anyone quilt and not gender specific in my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and your bonnie quilt. Please don't stand on your stepladders on back garden grass, i had visions of you toppoling and landing a&e. Crafty hugs Norah, Glenochil, Scotland
I've never tried it with a long arm...but I have quilted on it and it works like regular cotton. Just remember to press it all out first✅ (One time as I was fmq on it ...i didn't iron it and it folded in one spot...that's how I learned....🤩
Hi Tracy! Thank you so much for the batting tips. I knew there was a right and wrong side, but I couldn't remember which side faced the quilt top. I'm a beginner but I want to get it right the first time. Your tips are so useful! ~~ Hugs, Lynne
I like it! Love the tip about the double gauze! Pretty quilt! So, it’s true you can see your mistakes w colored thread. But the upside is you can see what you’re doing while you quilt; and you can also see your progress as you improve. So, there is that. You can’t have it both ways! 😝
They say if you display your quilting project on a fence and ride a galloping horse past it. If you can see any mistakes, it only means you have really good vision. lolol I'm certain I'm not quoting this correctly...but that's ok. I love your quilting tips!
I need to make a comment regarding your RUclips channel and another that was recommended to me. The pattern was very pleasing, so I watched it. I was immediately aware of the difference in both of the channels. This other person did press the seams as she created her block. But she NEVER used a quilt ruler to ensure that she created an accurate block and to true-up the sides Her finished block looked (dare I say) sloppy. And of course, we never saw multiple blocks combined into a finished product. All I could think was:. Tracy would do it (fill in the blanks) as I compared each step. You are a great tutor for all quilters! 😘 I am sure glad I found your channel so many years ago
Thank you for the great tips. With the gauze I have a question: when you wash the quilt, doesn’t it all wrinkle up because the gauze does that when you wash it? I’m familiar with the fabric but am hesitant to use it for that reason.
Loved these tips!! I have yet to meet a perfect quilter (or sewer!)...we all make mistakes and thats how we learn!! But i also love playing "spot the difference"! I usually lose badly, cuz i just love the entire project! I absolutely love how this one turned out - so colorful!! Thank you for all the giggles!! Now i gotta go check my batting!!
Tracy, you’re gonna scream when I tell you this! 😂 You went to all that trouble to trim the red that was showing through; then you put a red backing on it, which also probably showed through. So, after all that, the red seam allowance probably wdnt hv shown in the end!!! Oh my! 😳😱🤣
I thought that through prior....I used pure white batting so the red gauze did not show🤷🏻♀️ But the red border def would have shown because it would be in front of the pure white batting. Honestly though it probably wouldn't of mattered...LOL🤣 But I couldn't NOT see it after I saw it LOL🤣
Wonderful Information Tracy! Thank you for posting about the backing. I have looked for it stores but never knew what to call it. So therefore I would chicken out asking for help. 🤣Thanks my friend. Now I truly can try it!
I knew about the batting sides, but your skills are phenomenal! I have learned so much from your tutorials. I have the variegated thread - I may just give it a try! Thank you
Thank you so very much! You are a creative genius. You are so fun to watch and always share such great info....enuf talking already......time for me to get quilting.....luv U girl!
I am left handed and always put the pins in on the left side. Every time I pull them out it moves the seam. So really their is a right and a wrong side to put pins in. I love the way your quilt looks.
Does the double gods need to be pre-washed to shrink? I don’t pre-wash my fabric, but have wanted to use gauze for sometime. If need be, I will wash it.
The white gauze I do not pre-washed, but the red I absolutely did because I didn’t want it to bleed through✅ I think it shrinks just like regular quilting cotton though… Because it is 100% cotton.
Thank you so much. I really enjoy your videos. And your quilting that on your sewing machine? How in the world do you get it to fit under the between the do you know what I mean from the needle to the machine.
It's a bit of a push and shove type dance under such a small space.LOL🤣 I will be getting a new machine soon with a larger throat space...it's just too difficult to do larger quilts like this 🤩
Thank you for all your quilting tips. I have a question. Is it possible to use the bubble gaze in a traditional quilt sandwich, and quilt all three layers at the same time?
I don't see a difference in weight. The main difference is...it's softer on the skin...more pliable....(quilting cotton tends to be stiff especially when binding it). That's why I choose to leave off the binding and "turn" the quilt" and then attach by tacking it all together so it doesn't "gape"✅
I am a longarmer. Our saying is: Hide the pimples, show the dimples. Meaning the dimple side of the batting faces your needle (shows), the pimpled side faces away from the needle (hides). It's an easy way to remember it. I may look into the double gauze, but might be a challenge on my longarm, and I don't do pillow turn backing like you do. But I can see how it would make a comfy back. Do you seam it, since it's only 53 wide, or do you use it only on smaller quilts?
It depends...LOL🤣 If I have a lot of seams in one area all coming together then I press open....if it doesn't really matter then I go to whichever side...✅
@@TheSewingChannel, I wondered why I was almost the only one in the guild pressing open. Theirs looked better than mine. I always have wondered!! Thank goodness!!
Thanks for the tips I never would have thought about using bubble gauze for my backing and I think you did the birthing method right ? or am I wrong . But anyway I loved your colored thread , be brave and try things new is my moto .

The pin poking hint is wonderful!! thanks

Haha 🤣 that's right Dori! I would love to see some of the quilts of the people that boo hoo other's work🤩
Love the feathers! Beautiful quilt!
Thank you Kris...❣️ When you work with colorful thread...you know exactly what you need to do to improve skills...I could see ALL the mistakes❣️ LOL🤩
Awesomeness² ! I love these tips. Thank you for sharing this with us. Great 💫 💡!!
I like the idea of the Bubble gauze for the backing. It is very durable and comfortable against skin for cuddling!
I really want to try the bubble gauze and I went through all the comments and your responses. Thanks for the info!
You're welcome❣️
Oh Tracy! best batting video ever ! Thankyou!🥰🥰🥰
❤️
Great tips 👍 Thank you for sharing the information so we can all become better quilters 👏👏🇬🇧
Absolutely Glynis!🤩
I wonder how double gauge would behave on a long arm? I’m curious now because of how cozy you said it was as a backing.
Some that have used it on a longarm give it a thumbs up✅ I would keep the quilting big and open rather than dense. Try it and let us know❣️
I liked that you quilted the top with batting and then attached the backing. I have to try this when free motioning a larger quilt top. It will help to move the quilt around without the bulk of the backing too!! Brilliant!!
One of the reasons why I started doing it this way was to reduce the bulk while fmq✅Works great.🤩
A good quilter always loves good tips. No matter how long we sew and quilt, there is still much to be learned. I love how you stepped out of your comfort box and went for the colorful quilting thread to finish. Drawing the corners…GENIUS! Thank you for the kind words Susan❣️ I, myself thrive on good tips LOL🤣 Hopefully someone can answer your tailor's chalk question🤷🏻♀️
I use a suede shoe brush to rub off. Maybe use a toothbrush?
Magic Eraser works and so does a wet wipe... I would get the unscented kind. Or wait till you're done sewing and put it in the wash, then take a soft brush to it. You can add vinegar to the wash I heard that helps too.

Just found out my batting has front and back side. Was actualy even having problems with bearding on my Last quilt so you realy helped me
So glad you realized about the bearding! Awesome❣️
So I guess I’ve been doing my batting wrong all these years!I’ll try it the other way next time!
I loved the pointer about pressing the red edge the wrong direction... Of course, you would take the time to correct the problem. And your accuracy with your triangle points! Excellent! 😘

LOL🤣 For sure LOL
You are so kind to share with us. Bless you.
Thank you for all your tips ✂️🧵🪡
My pleasure Elizabeth!🤩
I love the look of the bubble gauze - can you use it if you’re having your quilt long-armed?
I believe so.. ask your longarmer just to make sure👌
I really love the tip about pressing a pin into the batting to tell which side is front and which side is back. Love this video. I’m going to try the gauze backing. Thanks for clarifying what it was exactly. Great job❤
Glad it was helpful Sharon🤩

I love that you showed uneven points I don't feel like I suck lol
LOL...none of us really suck LOL🤣 We are all just a work in progress🤩
super quilting tips! I didn't realize I could make the outer borders different sizes and I'm doing that in my next quilt. Thanks!
You're welcome DC...I love trying new things like the dif size borders🤩

Looks amazing! I was wondering why people used the bubble gauze
Thank you Teri🤩
Excellent video Tracy ‼️I love your format and hope you give so many quilting tips, I always learn something from you. Di
Thank you so much🤩!
Thank you for the great tips. With the gauze I have a question: when you wash the quilt, doesn’t it all wrinkle up because the gauze does that when you wash it? I’m familiar with the fabric but am hesitant to use it for that reason.
No it doesn't wrinkle up at all✅ Try it on small project first so you can see how it works maybe🤩

Yes it is....just remember to press the gauze out flat so things go smoothly✅

That is an absolute awesome way to remember the batting sides, Thank you❣️Yes I had to seam the gauze✅
Tracy, I've always been told to press BETWEEn the seams...is this not correct? How do you correctly press?
It depends...LOL🤣 If I have a lot of seams in one area all coming together then I press open....if it doesn't really matter then I go to whichever side...✅
@@TheSewingChannel, I wondered why I was almost the only one in the guild pressing open. Theirs looked better than mine. I always have wondered!! Thank goodness!!

Do you prewash the gauze before hand ?
No...I don't typically...but I did this time because it was so red....✅
Have you ever quilted the quilt with the double gauze on already?
Yes. It totally works. I just don’t like the feel of dense quilting. Seems to be more fluid and drapey with minimal quilting on back🤷🏻♀️✅
Seemed to go too fast and skipped over stuff for me but thanks,
I have long tutorials on all the different steps✅ This video was mainly a quick tip video🤩 Thank you for watching❤️
