    For the gingham, you're right that a straight design is the more important factor. The bias cut is very pretty and will bring a change of direction visually in a very square design. You could also have cut the pieces along the gingham lines even if your straight of grain is a bit off. But I do prefer the bias.. pretty.

    • @TheSewingChannel
      @TheSewingChannel  Год назад +2

      Thank you Helene❣️ I usually will cut along whatever straight line I could find...but this gingham was "so off" that it warranted the bias LOL🤣 I agree ...after I cut on the bias...I preferred that.❤️

    • @TheSewingChannel

      @@brendamccoy4625 never ever ever start pre-cut, jelly, rolls, and charm packs and such… They will shrink a quarter inch on you and it will mess up your entire quilt design…

      @@TheSewingChannel I forgot to mention I set the rack into a long under bed plastic gift wrap holder. Remember not to squeeze the starch out of the fabric. Let it drip naturally into the tray. Ask me how long it takes to iron out those squeeze creases. LOL

      @@brendamccoy4625 I have never done anything but whole cloth because starch shrinks material a small amount, so your 2 1/2 inch strips may now not be the right size for your pattern. To me cutting the strips out of whole cloth lets me choose ONLY the colors I like.

    This is going to be so darned cute, Tracy! If you think of it at the end of the series, could you please share how much of the gingham ended up going into scraps or waste? Finding more of an older fabric might be prohibitively expensive but when buying a current FQ bundle, grabbing 1/4-1/2yd extra of just any ginghams or plaids in a collection may be worthwhile. That was a big eye opener!
    I use liquid starch ever since my friend whose child has COPD told me aerosol propellants make it harder for those with hindered lungs to breathe due to their effect on the environment. It’s been over a year and while I miss the convenience, the mix of liquid starch and water 50/50 in a mister bottle has saved me a lot of money and works very well. I use the cheapest liquid starch I can find and am stunned by how long a half gallon lasts. Even better, the child no longer has asthma attacks in my home so yay!
    That sprayer tip for when aerosols are the best option, though? Genius!

    But yours is a novel approach, and I like it. You will need lots of extra, tho. The scraps wd be cute in a crazy quilt! I don’t mind crooked if it’s supposed to be crooked! But otherwise, every time I look at that quilt it’s going to bug me!!! 🌷

    Don't ever use spray starch when you are wearing hard contact lenses. I ended up in an emergency room after starch got under my contact lenses and scratched my corneas. I couldn't see; and, my eyes felt like they were on fire. I was blind for many hours. What I did not know was that not all the starch goes directly on to the fabric (some of it stays in the air for some time). I was warned to never wear contact lenses when I am using any product in a spray can or bottle. I don't wear contact lenses anymore.

    If you cut it in line with the selvages, you can have it be straight. Just something I found out about, and it works every time.

    I am fairly new to quilting, watch a lot of videos, etc., and I am just recently hearing about starching fabric before you cut it, and boy, do I wish I knew this sooner. Hardly anybody does this apparently bc I watch a ton of quilting videos and people rarely talk about it. I am making a square knot block and having the worst time matching my points. Just from the time I cut my pieces til I started assembling my blocks the fabric stretched and warped so badly. I am having to wrestle all my blocks to get the points even remotely matched up. Lesson learned. I will never make another quilt without starching my fabric first.

    Things I learned today: there is a trigger for spray cans, using 2 ruler method to cut. Using print on point to recover from wonky printing. I love your design so far. How about “Four Patch Garden” as a name?

      @@TheSewingChannel Yes. I often see a pattern that I think I want to make a quilt with. So, I make a copy of the pattern on paper and color it with colored pencils. If I still want to try it, I then make a sample from scraps. Sample blocks can be turned into beautiful quilts or other items.

    I use a clothing rack to hang my fabric to dry after I have started it.
    Can’t wait for the day where you will have your Martelli Matt with the nonslip ruler. You have no idea how much time that will save you
    I was working with red Gingham just last week and I don’t know what that term is but you take opposite corners and stretch the fabric and sometimes you can get it to go back to look in the way it supposed to
    And how come you have those EarPods in your ear?

    • @TheSewingChannel
      @TheSewingChannel  Год назад +3

      Thanks for the rack tip.
      This gingham would not cooperate at all......❣️

    For the 'background' fabric, do you use fat quarters for the look of variety? I'd just buy yardage....fat quarters in Canada are pricey!! 4$/fat quarter (individually). But i get it using fat quarters for the lighter 'background' to be varied.
