I've just read "the Midlife Cyclist" by Phil Cavell, in which he and the medical contributors strongly advise ditching one or two rides per week for load bearing or resistance workouts, ie walking or weights, for us older cyclists in order to help maintain bone density and ward off sarcopenia as we get older. A book well worth reading for anybody approaching, in, or even past midlife who wants to keep riding.
It's a good thing you got "caught up in the moment" during your ride with the lucky viewers. You were enjoying yourself! NEVER apologize for having a good time and not recording for us. I hope you enjoy your rides as much as we enjoy watching them! Make those wheels turn, Leonard!!
My wife and I laughed out loud at the start of this video. We are the same. People look at us funny when we say that we can't walk anymore. Yes we can cycle for miles, but walking just takes it out of us. And I in particular always get a stiff or lower back pain. We used to be good Walker's up to our mid to late 50's but our sole form of transport (including work commute) is the bike. We still do walk, but don't really enjoy it, whereas we love being on our bike's both road and e-bikes. We are like a couple of kids when walking, saying "are we there yet" knowing if we was on the bikes we would be not only at the end of this long lane we are walking along, but already at the end of the next lane.
people seriously underestimate walking when I signed in for Kilimanjaro, I took 6 months of preparation I was doing only 1 type of exercise: walking I started with 30min daily, very slowly. After few weeks I was at 3h walking daily, with the pace of almost running (but I did not run), with heart rate up to 150bpm And imagine: I got to the summit of Kili - many did not ;-)
Walking is a great way to add variety to your bank of fitness. Running/jogging is too hard on my joints. Swimming is great, but not that convenient unless you have facilities close by. I don’t! The best motivation for walking I’ve found is having a dog. I’ve been walking miles every day since I got mine. The benefits are incalculable. They add so much joy to your life and make walking a total pleasure, rain or shine. They also don’t seem to mind when I go out on my bike! Bonus! I did used to take one of them out when I went on my mtb. It was fine until he discovered hares! Took me 2 hours to find him! Beagles aren’t the most reliable off the lead when there are sniffs to be enjoyed! Enjoy the walking 😊
Nice video, Len. Good to see you switching things up a bit. After not being out for a run in about 4 months, I decided to do a short run today. It felt great to put feet to pavement again!🏃🏿♂️😎
I've added walking for a half hour or hour to my biking routine in the morning and it's helped a lot with clearing my head after lunch. Sadly, that's so I can work more...
I walk/hike on the days I don't ride. Walking is so good for you and highly underrated. Just another way to enjoy the great outdoors by slowing down and having a look. Glad you've taken it up, hope you can stick with it!
Great stuff brother! Walking is great for recovery too! I'm happy to see you taking the steps (haha) to achieve a fitter life, it may only be walking, however, it's inspirational - I take my dog for an hour walk every morning and as a treat (if I'm not cycling) on a night too. Get a dog brother! Haha.
Not a great fan of walking, but you are right Leanard, it's a good thing. You inspire me, so I will give it a go along with the bike. Just really enjoy the bike more, thanks for bringing it up, I will try to do some.
It is good to be reminded about balance. I think walking may be a good way for me to regain some of that after a tumultuous past 4 months. Thanks for the great content, always.
Had the exact experience on vacation with my wife two weeks back. Lots of walking on easy wooded trails and in NYC. Was surprised at how sore my legs were. I used to walk regularly until I started telecommuting two years back. Time to follow your example and start walking regularly again. Use it or lose it.
We live in Far North Queensland so on super hot days hubby and I will walk in the evening he hates walking being ex infantry but he says it does help him feel better on the bike too. Thanks for the great videos nice to follow somone who is of our era and lovely to see the English countryside too
Hi Leonard, I have been walking indoors and lately a bit of jogging (due to my hip accident). I'm back on the bike and the walking/jogging has certainly helped my level of fitness. Thanks for the informative videos.
Couldn't agree more. The linear movements of cycling eventually weakens your walking muscles. I like to mix in some hilly hikes from time to time to exercise those stability muscles.
Thanks Leonard, great video, always so relaxing to watch you riding through my home town area, though haven't been back for 20 years plus. Looking forward to the Bryton review as I'm thinking of upgrading from my $20 cycling computer after 30 ears of riding haha!
I'm the same. I can cycle for longer & farther than walking. After a while of walking my right hip & right leg in total gives up on me & it can take me a week to get back on my feet.
I agree it is a good idea to mix up your exercise types to use different muscle groups. I set monthly goals in Strava for both walking (50km) and cycling (800km) and this is sufficient motivation to keep me going as I can see how I'm progressing as the days go by. Looks like you had a very pleasant day for a ride after your walk.
I often walk while i cycle. Just today i carried my bicycle 1km back home after a puncture😂 Actually on the days between cycling I've incorporated walking, slow jogging and backwards walking.
I'm with you on this front. After some surgery had to add walking and no biking. Back on the bike now but still walk and have even added in some yoga for stretching. Cross training is good. Take care and good luck, Al
I was always jogging and running and short burst sprints, but found out the intensity of walking when I tried racing some seasoned power walkers for 5 miles. Lol. I felt some muscles aching me that I didn’t even knew I had. And I thought myself to be fit then. Wouldn’t try that now just like that.
Hey Leonard, good idea to get out walking, it helps me as well working different muscles and doing different cardio..I would however suggest better sneakers , as much as I like Chuck Taylors , running sneakers will support you much better when you start logging miles imho, cheers
Walking or hiking (to a set pace, if you can monitor it) is a very good addition to cycling, using a slightly different muscle grouping. I also add nordic skiing to my Zwift exercises in winter, just to add some variety to it.
nice vlog Leonard, good to see the local lanes in the sunshine unlike the morning of the JGV meet up! i tend to only walk home from the pub, but i do mix up the cycling with weight training - walking is such a positive thing to do though, far lower impact than running and you get to enjoy the outdoors rather than pushing your HR zones all the time :)
Totally get it about the walking, though it's usually as a rather poor cycling substitute for me. But my walks have been more compelling because I've deliberately taken routes I've never taken before, and despite living here for 35 years I've found some really interesting features (like a huge C14 tithe barn) which, to my shame, I never knew were there!
At nearly 50 now, and working at home, I don't really walk that much. To help counteract that, a couple days a week I do 30 min intervals of jumping squats, jumping lunges, walking lunges, etc. That sufficiently hits the walking/running muscles very hard in a short time. Then once a year I do a vacation that is heavy with hiking, and can bang out 10-15 mile hikes with relative ease. Not bad considering I barely walk the rest of the year. 😃
I went from walking to riding and now I walk and ride. The cardio part of riding makes walking a lot easier although my feet had to get use to pavement. I do think walking also has helped my riding especially my lower glutes. after 15 months I can now easily walk 5 miles and ride 30 without even thinking about it outside of the time it takes.
In addition to cycling, I walk 1.5 hours per day with my dogs. Especially after I cycle it helps to relax muscles and warm things up a little for better recovery
Hello Leonard I do had the same problem with my Karoo 1 after last update, Finally I find out the solution… wait more or less 3 to 5 minutes in order to let the Karoo find your ant + sensors. It worked at least to me. WAs very frustrating using the device as a…let’s say…a “bridge “
Work in a kitchen ,Porter ,spend eight hours a day walking ,must be building up some endurance?lol I do all sorts of excercise ,it’s fun adds another dimension and more all round fitness, good to see u doing the same
Welcome to the club. I'm surprised at how many muscles you use to walk. I walk more than I cycle and it has finally got the weight down a bit. I walk two x 45 minutes plus some intervals on the bike. Continue with nice videos.
I was doing a lot of hiking up in the mountains before I got back into biking. A 20 mile hike used to be no problem but after being off the trails and on the bike I recently went on a hike and found it to be pretty tough! Now I plan to get back out on the hiking trails once in a while. Cheers!
Good thought, adding walking to a general fitness plan. Also wanted to say that the rural area in today's ride look like they were shot in North Dakota. USA.
Fun video…. I have a great suggestion….come caddy for me on the golf course and walk the 5-6 miles up and down the big hills here. I play 2-3 times a week and always walk . The days I play golf I always go out and ride 15-20 miles in an hour +- a few minutes and I am super loose and warmed up for golf. The days I don’t play golf it’s 25 miles plus daily . My recovery days are determined by weather. I will ride in the rain when it’s warm but not golf. Must have the proper footwear for the walking. I will use a very light carry bag to make it easy on you when you caddy. The pay is good and I will feed you, too!
I don’t have any more disconnections with my Karoo 2 since a few upgrades. When raining hard indeed the drops reacts on the screen like if I touched it. I usually lock it when it rains
As long I can still do it, I play soccer once a week, 5-a-side. Same reasoning as the walking with benefit of a completely different group of people from the cycling world. I normally hit about 5k of running, so a park run as it were, but way more enjoyable.
I'm walking too, I broke the key in the lock to my shed and can't get my bikes out. The locksmith had a problem , he'll be back tomorrow. Ugh! But my son has had me walking up the steepest hills in the past few days.
Can totally identify with the walking thing. Trip to London the other week and I walked 26,000 steps in one day. Swollen ankles, blisters and aching calves! Felt like an old lady when I got up the next day as I was so stiff. Give me a bike any day 😂
Leonard: You're also a good candidate for some full body weight training, for perhaps 3 times a week in the beginning. I suspect you could bulk up the muscle pretty impressibly. Unlike professional cyclists, we middle-aged guys can benefit from a mix of cycling/weight training/walking even more so because we don't have to specialize in the sport to earn a living.
Years ago I gave the local cross country running team a run for their money. Problem was I couldn't cycle for a week. Instant back pain and shin splints. Triathlon is a mashup.
I went back to walking and a little running, not as much running as unused to do but a start. I've got a weight setup which I use for light resistance high reps for toning. Buying a basic electric treadmill is good for the short of time wet days. I lost those stubborn few kilos fast walking and I was my leanest ever when I used to be a serious runner. Cycling is my favourite but you need lots of distance to get lean and fit from just cycling. I have a 3 to 1 theory, 3 hours on the bike to a one hour run it fast walk.
What with the lockdown and now being retired I found myself sitting around to much .then I came across the conqueror challenge you pay a fee check out the walk you want to do you can set how long you want it to take. at the end you get a nice medal and they also plant a tree a certain mile stones I have 3 medals now got to sign up for another.
Walking is good too 👍 I went for a little walk with a woman who I've been knocking about with recently it was fun. Took my freehub apart and like 50 little bearing balls fell out. Took me 2 hours to figure it back together. It's almost completely quiet now though. I sneaked up on a deer, it was very surprised when I said excuse me. 🤣 Cheers for the video bossman. 🥳
We are on the same page with the walking fitness regime. I usually show just riding on my channel but now I'm putting in the hikes, so I should rename the bike room to hikes and bikes? Seriously though, I have found increasing my walks has strengthened my back as I was having issues with the sacral illeal joint which walking has really sorted out. I'm also amazed at the higher calorie burn when walking my local gravel cycling route.
i do walking as well as the bike..watched your ride in cambs i live just the other side of newmarket so no far from cambs.ive got my cannondale up for sale just picked up trek al3 been out on it a couple of times so far so good.
Get a dog ELOD (a rescue, preferably). That way you are sort of forced out for a walk. Can be a pain, but I’ve been forced out every day/every other for an hour for many many years. And they are often cute.
As much as I like dogs I don’t really need the commitment but as far as walking goes, I’ve thought about borrowing my neighbours dog…but then we are in the realms of cleaning up after it,
@@jollygoodvelo it sounds unlikely but it is something it’s very easy to get used to and not think about - hand in a bag, grab, pull inside out, done. Or walk in the country. Your neighbours would love you - but of course you would lose that imperative of needing to take your dog out else find the sofa in shreds/puddle in the kitchen…
It is a strange paradox between walking fitness and biking fitness. Something I'd also forgotten and relearned from going to the Dales. My advice - take some headphones and listen to some podcasts. Great escapism. Enjoy.
@@jollygoodvelo I totally agree with not using your headphones on a walk. I think apart from being alone with your thoughts it also allows you to better connect with your surrounding environment. I remember once I was walking along an ocean boardwalk and a pod of dolphins swam past. I tried to get the attention of other walkers but they all had their headphones on and couldn't hear me. They completely missed out on the experience.
On the way to work 4.30 in the morning my chain broke,i was 4 mile from home and 11 mile from work.Pushing my heavy ebike 11 mile was no fun.Moral of the story is .Carry a spare chain .
Had a rather unexpected 7km walk recently in regular leather soled shoes, (circumstance, don't ask lol) - shin splints to beat the band for about 3 days afterwards. Proper supportive walking shoes would have been much appreciated.
Seriously tho', the Primary Mover in walking is the Gluteus Max. The same Prime Mover as pedalling a bike. NO folks, the quads AREN'T the cycling Prime Movers.
After a lengthy and continual COVID-19 lockdown my recent doctors appointment requires a 2klm walk from the car park. I was shocked at the amount of fitness loss.
Many of these action camera have a record loop feature where they constantly record the last few minutes. That way you don’t have to record hours. The problem is battery life and it’s the same on all action cameras.
Been meaning to ask for a few weeks now... are you still doing your fasted rides? Not noticed you mention them on a vlog for a while. I used to do a couple a week when I was commuting to work, never noticed then make much difference to my weight but must have helped a bit.
@@jollygoodvelo kind of yes the days i ride to work 8 miles one way 16 miles round trip with 900 feet of elevation when i come back me n my wife go for 1 hour to 1.5 mile walk 3 to 4 miles 3 times a week
I really hate walking. I almost feel like my body has „evolved“ by sitting in front of a computer all day. Cycling feels effective and walking is a nuisance for my body 😂 I feel like my legs don’t fit my feet
P.S. I alternate between walking/light upper body workout say on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and cycling for the legs and lungs in between. If the weather's bad, I skip the ride and pick it up the next day. No biggie.

Done the same thing here Leonard. It's amazing how walking suffers after just riding all the time. Thanks for sharing this very important video.
Hopefully the walking fit comes back fairly quickly with a bit of work.
Good for you Sir!! All types of exercise is good for our health!
Good luck with the added exercise Leonardo - you will, as you pointed out, work different muscles which presumably is a good thing!
Well done Leonard , keep going.
Another inspirational video. Need to incorporate walking in my workouts.
people seriously underestimate walking
when I signed in for Kilimanjaro, I took 6 months of preparation
I was doing only 1 type of exercise: walking
I started with 30min daily, very slowly.
After few weeks I was at 3h walking daily, with the pace of almost running (but I did not run), with heart rate up to 150bpm
And imagine: I got to the summit of Kili - many did not ;-)
As always another inspiring video....thank you..will try to incorporate it in my life too!
Walking is a great way to add variety to your bank of fitness. Running/jogging is too hard on my joints. Swimming is great, but not that convenient unless you have facilities close by. I don’t! It's good to change up every now and then.
It's always a good idea to vary one's exercise routine. When I am not cycling, I go for 5 mile walks.
That’s a little far for me at the moment. I just don’t have that much time to spare.
Nice video, Len. Good to see you switching things up a bit. After not being out for a run in about 4 months, I decided to do a short run today. It felt great to put feet to pavement again!🏃🏿♂️😎
Walking is good, I do it a lot myself. Good balance with cycling. Cool shirt, Leonard.
Walking is a very good form of exercise
I've added walking for a half hour or hour to my biking routine in the morning and it's helped a lot with clearing my head after lunch. Sadly, that's so I can work more...
Certainly clears the head

Hiking shoes for the win. Comfort +protection for feet, knees, hips & lower back.
I find that a walk several hours after a hard effort on the bike really helps with my recovery.
I try to walk on my recovery days and any off day of riding . Makes the recovery a little better.
Makes a lot of sense
Hi Leonard, I often walk during a ride sometimes because the scenery is nice , sometimes because I'm knackered! Good content as always, all the best.
I enjoy a walk especially out in the countryside like at Dalby forest or in the lakes
Great stuff brother! Walking is great for recovery too! I'm happy to see you taking the steps (haha) to achieve a fitter life, it may only be walking, however, it's inspirational - I take my dog for an hour walk every morning and as a treat (if I'm not cycling) on a night too.

I’m not a great fan of walking either but I was surprised how unfit I felt walking recently.
I'm 61 and I play tennis 3-4 times a week. Tennis helps my biking and biking helps my tennis. Win-win.
That’s going to be very good exercise
It is good to be reminded about balance. I think walking may be a good way for me to regain some of that after a tumultuous past 4 months. Thanks for the great content, always.

The flamingo socks did it for me.
Came to the same conclusion back in January and now mix cycling and walking, about 3-41/2 mile walks. Definitely a benefit to fitness.
Walking is great exercise.
Thank you Mr. Lee……your vlogs are really beautifully produced……..
Thanks David
Great video Leonard. My wife and I have taken up walking this year. We are up to 10 miles a day, twice a week. BTW good shoes are essential. Thanks
Blimey that is quite a commitment. I agree about the shoes.
Someone recently sold me on the idea of bare foot shoes, did my usual walk of around 5 or 6 miles, absolute bloody agony 🙁
I can imagine!
Very inspiring individual...👍🚴♂️

Good for you. Weight bearing exercise is critical as we age. Osteoporosis is no joke.
It certainly isn’t.
Walking is great! Your walk can be much more enjoyable with better shoes that provide good cushioning. Asics all the way...

Cycling is my favourite but you need lots of distance to get lean and fit from just cycling. I have a 3 to 1 theory, 3 hours on the bike to a one hour run it fast walk.
I need to follow your example
Whitby is a beaut place but it's a bugger to walk around, unless you're a mountain goat. The steps up to the Abbey, hard work.
I can imagine the deer was very suprised
right on. good conditioning for your legs.
What is the sound track starting @ 5:48??
I recommend jogging & swimming too....you'll be entering triathlons in no time..
Steady on!
@@jollygoodvelo ha ha ha
i do walking as well as the bike..watched your ride in cambs i live just the other side of newmarket so no far from cambs.ive got my cannondale up for sale just picked up trek al3 been out on it a couple of times so far so good.
Enjoy your new bike
Enjoy.
I might do the podcast thing but I also like being alone with my thoughts.
4:38 ... song please?
Had a rather unexpected 7km walk recently in regular leather soled shoes, (circumstance, don't ask lol) - shin splints to beat the band for about 3 days afterwards. Proper supportive walking shoes would have been much appreciated.
Ouch! Hope you are ok now. Interestingly, I was feeling it in my shins after my first couple of walks.
What you are missing is a 15kg backpack. 15 min km. "By the left..."
yes bryton rules! cheap and reliable!
It can jump up and surprise you
Two legs bad , Two wheels good .. Great vid
I’m not the biggest fan of walking I will admit but it’s not that bad just doing 20 mins
I do not enjoy walking, love cycling. Nice video, do you recommend any camera for cyclist for safety? thanks
Many of these action camera have a record loop feature where they constantly record the last few minutes. That way you don’t have to record hours. The problem is battery life and it’s the same on all action cameras.
Eh? Bent Lane? Winchester City Council? What?
I'm confused (again).
Your vlogs are always enjoyable - even when I'm confused!
Yes. Bent Lane is near the town of Denmead which is under the authority of Winchester city council
"Nip out, take a twenty minute walk to Tesco Express for a cake."
Been meaning to ask for a few weeks now... are you still doing your fasted rides? Not noticed you mention them on a vlog for a while. I used to do a couple a week when I was commuting to work, never noticed then make much difference to my weight but must have helped a bit.
The intermittent fasting had no effect at all. It was a bit of a waste of time.
I am mountain biker but also walk 5 to 10 miles a week
Is that intentional?
@@jollygoodvelo kind of yes the days i ride to work 8 miles one way 16 miles round trip with 900 feet of elevation when i come back me n my wife go for 1 hour to 1.5 mile walk 3 to 4 miles 3 times a week
@@jollygoodvelo my work is also not in office so average walk at work is also 2.5 miles a day
I find cycling is great for the quads and glutes, but walking is better for calves, abs and lower back muscles.
cross training!? i don't care for walking much either. will be watching your progress w interest. perhaps i will be inspired...
Walking is kind of growing on me
I really hate walking. I almost feel like my body has „evolved“ by sitting in front of a computer all day. Cycling feels effective and walking is a nuisance for my body 😂 I feel like my legs don’t fit my feet
Would be nice if you added some walking into your videos. I walk too, 5km a day plus cycling.
I might add a little bit from time to time
Walking about 8k a day is very good for weight loss
P.S. I alternate between walking/light upper body workout say on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and cycling for the legs and lungs in between. If the weather's bad, I skip the ride and pick it up the next day. No biggie.
A little and often is a great approach
Vuelta on TV, Leonard on the tablet.......life is odd sometimes.....
what’s next... weights?:)
Steady on!
