  • Cycling shorts How do I choose? What cycling shorts have the best pad or chamois?
    Why do some bibs & shorts cost more than others? What should I look for in a quality cycling short or cycling bib? These questions will be answered by USA Cycling Expert Coach Menachem Brodie, to help you understand the differences in the most vital part of cycling bottoms: the pads!
    The chamois (or pads) are the most important part of cycling bottoms, shorts, bibs (or whatever you would like to call them). There are 5 points of contact on a bike:
    Each of your hands, Both of your feet, and your butt. As a bike fitter, the general rule followed, is we want roughly 60-70% of your weight, to be on your butt, and supported by a proper fitting saddle.
    You can learn more about how to properly sit on a bike by watching me video on just that here:
    • Ride your bike faster:...
    Very important is that you understand the difference between the different levels of clothing and bibs/shorts, so you can choose the correct pair of cycling shorts for you, the terrain, and the amount of time that you spend in the saddle!

    Thank you for the great information! After watching this video I went back through all of my shorts, and discovered that the highest quality chamois I own, was attached inside another pair of shorts that I had never worn! I have brought that pair of shorts back action and it has made a difference. I referenced this video in the comments of a video on my channel - Keeping Your Bum Happy on a Bike Seat.

    wash a cheap bib a few times sometimes they'll get more flexible and comfortable, but don't count on em lasting more than a year of hard riding

      Not my style. I've personally purchased exactly 3 cheap bibs in my lifetime, and have regretted each one. for me, i'd rather save up for another 1-2 months and get something good, than but a cheap bib and have my undercarriage pay the price.
      but to each their own!

    I've never owned a pair of cycling shorts. *What I like to know is how elastic are cycling shorts?* If at least somewhat elastic, then that might it a little easier to choose the right size.

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  4 года назад +1

      They're fairly elastic. Many of the manufacturers have size guides to help you get started in about the right size.

    I'm very new to the sport and know nothing about the right padding. Can you recommend a good go to set that will work well for 4-6 hour rides max. The options out there are intimidating, thanks.

      My Personal Go-To's have been the Castelli. Usually their middle of the line are great for up to 6 hrs in the saddle. Reason #1 why I love their pads: They hold up over time- even when they're "done" I can still use them for short recovery ride days without a second thought.
      pop over to www.Castelli-Cycling.com and look at their current selection.
      Then find a local retailer where you can try them on for yourself.
      Let me know which one you pick up!

    what size should i buy? how tight should be the bibs around my shoulders? and how tight around my waste

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  3 года назад

      Great question, each brand is different. the straps on your shoulders should be snug, but not pulling you forward, and if buying bibs, there should be very little tension around your waist, just support.
      Hope this help?

      I think Assos is a fantastic brand, however, as per their slogan "Sponsor yourself" it's a bit out of the price range for most riders.
      Personally I've owned a handful of assos clothes through my riding career, mostly purchased second hand, and have been very pleased with them. For value and quality, I have fallen in love with Castelli's stuff and think they've got some absolute fantastic pieces.

    Hi, a problem I have is that I sweat a lot and I find that the chamois in my Garneau shorts seems to really soak up the sweat and then start chafing. Do you know what features in a chamois I should look for to know that they will resist getting soaked?

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  8 лет назад

      I'm not incredibly knowledgeable of chamois, but what I do know is the following: The pads are usually rated for either hours to be ridden, or comfort level. They also tend to have greater wicking capabilities as you go higher up the price ladder.
      That being said, are you using a chamois cream? If you are, and it is a "summer" or lighter cream, try moving to a thicker cream or a "chamois balm" which has a higher viscosity and will last a bit longer.
      Let me know what works for you!

  • @rawhideleather
    @rawhideleather 7 лет назад

    It's not a chamois but we still call it a chamois because that's what it used to be. What? Why not call it what it is now... a pad?

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  7 лет назад

      Tradition, perhaps? Not sure why, but that seems to be the way things work.
      The Giro d'Italia leader still wears the Maglia Rosa, which means "Pink Sweater", which refers to the days of old when cycling jerseys were made of wool....Can't even imagine how difficult it was to ride in the heat in those!

    i dont have issues with friction but i do have issues with being sore like i have a bruise for a few days to week after my ride. bought some padded shorts offline and they feel like they arent going to do anything

    • @HVTraining

      It sounds as though perhaps your seat is either too high, too hard, or perhaps you are riding on a saddle that is not the right fit for you.
      Check out my "how to ride your bike faster: sitting properly for cycling" video and see if anything there hits home.

      HVTraining my legs have a slight bend in them almost straight but not locked when i have my heel on the pedal at 6. My saddle is the one that came with the bike and i am a bit heavyset at 5'10 and 240-245lbs

      I'm also having the same problems with bruised sitbones. Where are you up to now with it? I used to race when younger and never had problems with saddles, however now after a long break I'm a heavier and finding it's a big problem. Have the padded shorts helped?

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  6 лет назад

      If shorts and changing saddles dont help with these issues, heading to a certified/ experienced bike fitter is the next step. Having the wrong bike setup can put a lot more weight on the backside or hands than there should be (around 70% on the backside, 30% on the hands for a road bike). Sometimes riders will make changes to the bike setup to make themselves more comfortable due to neck/shoulder/hand issues, but overtime can cause this kind of issue.
      Check out my How to Sit on a Bike Properly video for a bit more about this: ruclips.net/video/DAidrTRskLI/видео.html

    What about your junk bunching up or pinching parts?

    • @HVTraining
      @HVTraining  4 года назад

      That is a legit problem (although I prefer to call them the family jewels :-) )
      It's been my experience that with the right bib shorts and a proper bike fit, that the issue tends to go away.
