- Kings Island Announced its Newest roller coaster Orion last year. Its a Giga Coaster and features a 300 foot drop. I got a chance to ride it in the first few days of operation and what a great job the park did with this new addition. Kings Island is considered on of the best parks in the world and now having a rare Giga coaster to add to the already impressive lineup truly puts it in an elite category. This is my Full Review on Orion and what it means for Kings Island and how it stacks up against others like intimidator 305, Millennium Force and Fury 325. This ride impressed me. It blew my minds with that first drop. Especially in the back row. It throws you over it and you just fly through the layout. My favorite coaster at my home park.

Freaking loved Orion!!! Note to all frankly ‘spoiled’ enthusiasts, this ‘Giga’ (and it’s a Giga) is flatout fast, fun, and in no way do you feel like you got ‘shorted’. Steepest (and best) drop of all Giga’s, only ‘wave turn’ of all of them and it’s ‘unique’ compared to RMC, best speed hill with ‘flojector’ at what feels like 100mph, and yes, the best themed Giga of all!! Quit complaining and go ride already!!
And OkayCoasters, freaking spot on analysis and as always, best editing of ANYONE!!

Someone said vortex has more airtime than Orion
Its great for theme parks in general and I celebrate it, but also, in the friendly sport of banter/opinion, I humbly disagree. RMC's have impossible, disorienting turns and low to the ground inversions that weren't possible before, all through a lattice structure. How can you say this is 'unique"? It's a 4 person, GP monster. Plain vanilla.

i dont understand why people thought that wave turn would give good airtime, it wasnt even a wave turn it was a stengel dive, but for some reason people called it a wave turn, and look at the shape of it, like how would someone think that it could provide strong airtime
yeah, everything has to be about airtime, and nobody can just apprefiate a fun element! :D
Lol I keep seeing you in every video but yeah I agree I’m not sure why some people thought you would get a whole bunch of airtime from it. It is still really fun and provides a small pop of airtime.
Smc7737 it’s literally a giant Stengel dive, it banks inwards so if it gave anything it would be positives, that also answers the dumb people’s question of why it faces away from the park
I actually get a bit of lateral airtime everytime I ride it😂 maybe it’s just because I’m pretty skinny! All 11 times I’ve ridden it this summer, I’ve experience lateral airtime on that thing! So fun! It also broke my mask 😂 so will always remember that!
Sedric Granger oh yeah totally, thought it is little, it is very fun airtime.
This is the best drop of any coaster I have ridden. It felt bigger than Millennium Force. Ive never floated out my seat on any other drop like this one it was bliss. I have to assume Fury or Leviathan are the same. Orion's drop does not even feel like a coaster it really feels like you have dived over a 30 story cliff.
I remember being so disappointed my first ride cause one of my friends I went with got kicked off because his restraint didn't come down all the way and it put me in a negative attitude. But man has it gotten better everytime I ride it. It just may be my fav at KI
It is excellent. The storytelling elements are great. The ride may be a tad short but it's comfortable, fun and stunningly presented. I love it.

As usual, love to hear your take and presentation is top notch. When I got my eyes on Orion's layout, I knew the pacing was gonna be great, and had an inkling the drop was steeper than the norm from the first blueprints. Glad to hear my initial impression was correct...now can we maybe start a Change.org petition to kill that trim?
Also, it's not the last 1500' (or maybe 1000'?) of Fury that are the issue, those last few pops of airtime are among B&M's best. It's the dead zone after the treble clef through the helix that's a problem. Orion would definitely have benefited from at least one more element, but it definitely doesn't suffer from having a dead zone.

12 rides in, and although I stand by the vibration issue, the coaster has grown on me. Great airtime and fantastic speed in the front. Definitely a great coaster with tremendous capacity for the park.

Great review. I rode it for the first time Friday. My first giga coaster in 20 years. The steepness of the lift hill both in it’s ascent and decent was the most extreme I’ve experienced. I will say that I also rode Diamondback for the first time as well that day and I found that experience to be more memorable than Orion. Still a great coaster I look forward to revisiting
I now live in Texas but The Island is my home and favorite park. I rode my favorite coaster with it debuted in 79. The Beast has always been KI flagship ride. But after 41 years Orion may be the go to ride. Even though it is smaller it is original. It doesn’t have that classic B&M L-Shape out and back design.
Theres no denying its an absolute masterpiece to look at, for me, without a doubt the most majestic coaster I have ever seen!

Dude! I love your content. I agree that the speed hill was the single greatest element on a giga. I also grayed out a little bit on Orion's belt (the helix). If that trim didn't hit, it would easily be a top 10 for me.

Just rode it, loved it for the most part. The first drop is just breathtaking, and such a looooong way down at its steepest angle. The wave turn is one of the cooler elements ive experienced, the front right seat gives some good lateral air time and the view, sideways, is so unique at that height. I wish it went further into the woods before turning around, then we could avoid that somewhat rough upward helix before the end of the ride, but the turnaround itself is decent enough. The speed hill was a little overhyped if i may, maybe a full train would have filled out this element for me, personally i prefer the wave turn. Then theres the air time hill with a BLOCK BRAKE 🤬🤬🤬, the air time is still quite sustained, just interrupted. I remain out of my seat for nearly the entirety of the hill, still. The roughest moment of the ride comes next in that meandering turnaround before the final wave hill, which in the front right seat provides solid ejector, then a nice pop upwards and into the brake run. I almost forget there is no mid-course brake run, which just amps the points i give this ride. Now, i still havent ridden Fury, so this stands pretty high on my charts, the only thing it lacks is sustained speed, which the Intamins command. Id kill that mid course turnaround and add some straight track (yes, straight track!) after the first drop to send the ride further into the woods, and more straight track before or after the speed hill. Straight track at a high speed is always welcome in my book! Other than that, very well rounded ride.

I’m suprised I rode 5x today and I thought the turning hill before the brake was the best airtime on the ride the speed hill was also good tho and the drop was amazing

I love orion. I got 3 rides: front, back, and row 6. In the back i actually got sideways air time on the wave turn and great floater on the speed hill.

Nice review. I hope to be riding it August 8, at the tail end of my long-awaited visits to Hershey, Knoebels, & Kennywood. I've got some really great unridden hypers/gigas coming up!
@Spike Vicious Yes, Kennywood is open. They had delayed opening by only a few days. But it will be limited operations this year, not sure exactly what that means, but I'll be happy with whatever I'm able to do. If I had already visited these PA parks, I would instead have gotten a Kentucky Kingdom pass and spent several days there.

I'm scheduled to be at Kings Island on the 30th but that might not happen due to the recent Covid surge. It makes me sad, but it is what it is I suppose. That said, I am really looking forward to riding Orion. I love me some speed and this looks like it might be a Giga built more for speed than any of the others outside of I305.

Man love your videos, they're so good brother. I rode Orion on 7-2 and got a middle seat. I must say I was a little underwhelmed. This could be it being the first day, dealing with the masks and a slight gray put after the first drop. I've had six rides on it to date and let me tell you, I was wrong with my first assessment. It's really good, especially in the front seat. The theming they did in the area just buttons it up so nicely also. So happy we finally got her! Wished I could have seen you there man, hopefully in the near future!

Update, I've had a few backseat rides now, Orion is now my favorite coaster at KI. It's magnificent!
I think Millenniums drop is more forceful but I realized I like B&M more you just have so much more freedom on those seats and the drop felt steeper

after riding orian 6 times in the last hour of the day without a fast pass or boarding pass, except for the endless drop and 2-3 airtime hills on orian, i like dimondback way better it feels like 5-6 airtime moments, they look to similar next to each other to, the next coaster should be, RMC of the beast with original layout, but new smooth track first 1/2 then most insayne brand new second section that is amazing, call it, the beast reloaded, so they can still sell all the original beast merch and stamp reloded on it ;) (that what they really care about) it was to rough it needs it, mystic timbers reminded me of mavrik too it was awsome low turny fun, great park tho

For me much better than the turnaround on i305 (I like that too) and Fury..........Yup I do think its my single favorite moment. I need a few more rides tho.
I mean, at least King's Island isn't California's Great America. We don't get crap. Now a bunch of office building have popped up around the park over the last 30 years and the city changed zoning which keeps the park from doing basically anything nice.
It's the best Giga Coaster in Ohio.

Orion was fun and the day I went, I literally walked onto the ride at 3pm. While Orion was fun, with the train not being fully loaded (and it has the SAME general length as diamondback and Magnum XL 200) to me it felt like it dragged and it was too short. Millenium DOES have 6500 feet of track and truly feels like a more 'complete' ride. The low speed hill was great, the trims took away from the 2nd airtime hills sadly. If Orion had diamondback style trains instead of the 4 wide it'd probably felt less draggy with the train empty and be more forceful. It was like Millennium force had a baby with Valravn IMO, but it's just my opinion. I also felt like Millennium, diamondback and Magnum had better airtime, and mystic timbers just keeps you enthralled from drop to shed.with it's constant "Maverick" style elements minus the inversions

I slightly like diamondback better because of its airtime
I got lucky and was able to ride Orion twice and holy crap this is insane. I was lucky enough to get row 2 and the back and while they were different, I have no idea which one I prefer. Overall it is a crazy good coaster and while it's not the best in the park, I can safely say that I believe it is better than Diamondback. Some people might disagree but this thing is away underrated and none of the POVs do it justice.

Okay coasters you did not speak of leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland which was the First Giga by B and M you should ride it to get all the giga credits and compare it to everyone
Yea I was hoping to get that credit this year but it may be next year now
I can't help but wonder if Firehawk would either still be here and maybe Orion would've been built somewhere else like behind Banshee or Firehawk would've been relocated to another park if Vekoma hadn't stopped manufacturing those parts that Firehawk needed in order to continue use operating.

I feel like Kings Island’s last two coasters have gotten so much undeserved hate. People complained that Mystic Timbers wasn’t an RMC and had a basic layout, then they complained that the shed wasn’t good enough. Now they complain that even though Kings Island dropped thirty million dollars on a roller coaster, what they built isn’t enough. Y’all need to get over yourselves.
