In today’s video we review Diamondback, a Bolliger & Mabillard hypercoaster at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. Opening in 2009 as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the park with a price tag of $22 million, Diamondback has been a staple at Kings Island for over a decade. But with the new Giga coaster Orion opening at the park in 2020, many people have dethroned Diamondback as the best steel roller coaster at Kings Island. In this video I'll tell you why I prefer Diamondback over Orion, as well as give my complete thoughts on the coaster and place the Park Pros coaster rating tier list. I LOVE that turnaround on Diamondback. I LOVE Diamondback, but I prefer super fast and relentless rides, so I prefer Orion. I do think that Diamondback has one of the best layouts on a non-inverting B&M coaster.

Totally agree! Finally got to ride it in October and it more than impressed. I put Diamomdback as #1 in the park and as #1 B&M Hyper, just above Mako.
Diamondback does hold a special place in my heart. Back in 2011, my mother surprised me with, at the time, a trip of a lifetime, a trip to Kings Island and Cedar Point! I'm from Canada and was just getting into coasters as an interest, and discovered lots of parks when I noticed the "Other parks" link on Canada's Wonderland's website. I found Cedar Point and Kings Island among others and was talking to my mom about all of them. We went and it was just stupidly hot, but I was able to get rides in on many coasters, including Firehawk and The Beast (But not Vortex... it was closed due to a Chain issue earlier that month... I'm still pissy over that...). At the time, I had this stomach dropping thing where any time I went down a drop, my stomach would hurt a lot, so I never rode coasters larger than Vortex at CW for that reason, that all changed when I manned up and rode Diamondback... It cured me, literally, I rode it and felt no pain at all! This was a turning point in my life, where now whenever I ride coasters, I don't feel such pain anymore. This was all before I knew what an enthusiast was or Coaster credits, and I barely knew manufacturers, and while my love for coasters waned after, it came back strong when I went to Six Flags Great Adventure for the first time in December of 2015, again my mother surprising me with a trip to it's Holiday in the Park event and a 2016 Gold Seasons Pass, went a few more times in 2016 to that park and that's when I got my first favourite, El Toro~
Diamondback was THE ride that helped me love Roller Coasters, I since went back to Kings Island after 11 years just recently and while it was good, it... didn't have me racing back up the Fast Lane line for a re-ride... Orion did, The Beast did, Mystic Timbers did...
I think people just hate on 2nd gen B&M hypers a bit too much, with the exception of Shambhala. I rode Behemoth for the first time in 2009, when I first went to Canada's Wonderland, and I loved this ride so much. It had amazing airtime, and just loved the speed and feeling of dropping down from every hill, and the trims don't even affect the ride that much. Now 10 years later (cause Canada's Wonderland couldn't open for 2020), it's still my favourite at the park. It has gotten a rattle, but Idc about B&M rattles that much, since all B&Ms eventually get them. Yes, B&M hypers are not inventive in terms of layout, but they're meant to please the crowds that don't even notice that. Plus, B&M hypers are meant to focus on the airtime anyways, and I'm an airtime fan. In my opinion, B&M's hyper coasters are just awesome in my opinion, and I may be biased since B&M is my favourite manufacturer. I'm glad Cedar Fair acquired the Paramount parks, because the B&Ms Cedar Fair adds to their big parks are top notch.
Good points made. I'm also glad Cedar Fair has been putting a lot of love into the Paramount Parks. I just wish they'd show the same love to Valleyfair and Worlds of Fun.
@@ParkPros I'd doubt that, since I don't think Cedar Fair sees a reason to invest a lot of money in those parks, because most likely they won't see a massive return on investment from those parks. Valleyfair is only a half hour from Minneapolis and Worlds of Fun is in Kansas City, Missouri, but maybe those cities aren't growing fast enough like with Carowinds near the Charlotte area, and Charlotte has been growing pretty fast. Plus there aren't any other major cities near those parks. Most of the big Cedar Fair parks are near very good locations (well maybe not Cedar Point xD).
Good video. When Diamondback came out it was generally very highly rated by enthusiasts. It’s less so today, and I don’t know if that’s because of increased competition among coasters, or just because it has fallen out of fashion.

Yeah when I first saw that, I was like, "That's the train on Behemoth....." Well. they're almost basically the same ride anyways, so no one would have noticed anyways xD

At first I thought Orion was much better than Mystic and Diamondback, but during my last few visits Orion’s trim seems to be hitting really hard. That, combined with the second and third elements not doing too awfully much has pushed it back to third place. That might change when they open back up in 2021
I rode this 8 times in August 2019 and it's in my top 15 and it's my #2 B&M hyper
Looks like the best B&M hyper hands down, or should I say hands up...
I'd say Shambhala looks superior, with its stronger looking airtime, larger drop, better pacing and that amazing looking speed hill
You basically summed up exactly how I've been raving about Diamondback to a tee! Even in your point about how it's just one of those rides you love everything about.
Rode 5 times in a row all back seat last weekend, legit ejector down the first hill and sustained flojector over the camel back .Best rides i've ever had on it.
It is real close for me between Orion and Diamondback. I barely have Orion ahead, mainly for the first drop and speed, and it is smooth at this point. Diamondback, while my favorite B&M hyper, has a bit of a rattle. Once Orion establishes that rattle, I think I would have Diamondback ahead of it. Diamondback is the best B&M Hyper I have been on, but I still have a few more to get on.
Diamondback is a really good coaster one of my favorites at King Island but Orion is #1.
The trains made the difference for me, I thought Orion and Diamondback are similar enough I just really like the trains on Diamondback better especially if you are in the back row seats on the train
Agreed, I have nothing to back this but it feels like the longer trains on the new trains deliver better airtime.
@@ParkPros I think it has more to do with the spacing on the trains, you are almost on your own little island and not bumping into the person sitting next to you
Behemoth is the same way, however Behemoth was designed as an Airtime buffet, that's perfect in the back row, it's better than Leviathan and Diamondback

raging bull is the ONLY B&M hyper with true ejector and its only in one row
The back 3 rows are all solid options on Bull.

i rode diamondback 7 times today and one was in the morning. it kinda sucked, but i went back and rode it later and it was some of the best airtime i’ve ever experienced. i still like orion better though.
Imagine the capacity if b&m built 4 across trains with the same length of diamondbacks trains?

Due to a combination of long trains and layout: Diamondback probably has more airtime than any coaster after Steel Vengeance and The Voyage, only more vertical and at higher speeds than either. SV has the most airtime; The Voyage has the most for a wooden coaster and Diamondback probably has the most airtime for a non hybrid steel coaster.
I've not been to Kings Island but I've been to Canada Wonderland and preferred Behemoth to Leviathan. Behemoth is even longer than Diamondback 5318' of track, and it also has a larger 226' drop; 11' more than that of Diamondback.
I've heard Diamondback has a rattle since the ground beneath K.I. is soft, which is also why Banshee has a reputation for having developed a rattle BEFORE Diamondback, even though it opened 5 years later. In fact: that's why I initially didn't believe Diamondback developed a rattle the 1st time I heard such a complaint, but soon thereafter many people complained about a rattle at the end of Diamondback (And I'm not trying to be witty or funny either; we've all heard the rattlesnake jokes).
When I was a little kid, The Beast was the longest, tallest and fastest coster in the world and #1 on my coaster bucket list. Now in 2022: I've STILL never visited King's Island, but I want to ride Diamondback MORE than I want to to ride The Beast, Mystic Timbers, Banshee, AND EVEN ORION!
The only park where the B&M Giga is better than the B&M hyper IMO is Carowinds with Fury 325. B&M classifies their gigas as hypers, so based on that criteria: I've ridden 4. In Chronological order: they're Behemoth: Leviathan; Nitro and Raging Bull. Of those four: For me Leviathan and Nitro tie for third place; Raging Bull comes in at #2 and Behemoth is the best B&M I've ridden yet.
Fury 325 is tied with The Voyage and Velocicoaster for my top 3 bucket list coasters (coasters I want to ride the most that I've not yet ridden), but Diamondback is my next B&M bucket list coaster after that.
Funnily enough my favorite B&M in the park is Banshee, but to each their own i guess

I love Orion, don’t get me wrong but there’s just something special about Diamondback to me that keeps it #1 on my list. Well 1, riding that coaster for the first time was a HUGE accomplishment for me! I suffer with anxiety but I always had some fascination towards coasters, and I had a motivation after a “friend” told me “I don’t think you’ll ever ride that” when she rode it for the first time to ride it and ride every other coaster in the park. I worked up the courage to ride it and one day, I finally bit the bullet and went for it. I was a nervous wreck. That first hill was the most nerve wrecking and epic part, and still is for me today! It feels like the hill will never end when going up, and the airtime is absolutely incredible! I feel so much freedom when I ride this coaster and feel like I’m flying! I ended up falling in love with this coaster and it’s now my #1 favorite at Kings Island. The airtime, the scenery, the layout, the splashdown, all of it for me is just amazing! It holds a special place in my heart. It’s a “must ride” for me every time I go! I love Orion too but I personally prefer Diamondback for the airtime and it just holds a special place in my heart, the biggest accomplishment for me 💘

Completely agree that Diamondback is better than Orion (length, diverse elements, airtime, etc.), however I still think Banshee is the best B&M in the park 😂

I have KI as my home park and they’re my 2 and 1 at KI, I prefer Orion by a pretty fair amount, Diamondback has insane floater and I still love it to death, but for me, Orion is just better imo, it has ejector (speed hill and drop) and a grey out moment (weird helix thing) but I still love them both and I research your opinion 👍
Interesting. Haven't reviewed it yet but for me Mystic Timbers is comfortably the best coaster in the park.
@@ParkPros mystic Timbers during winterfest or after/during rain is my second favorite in the park but it still is far from Orion in my opinion

I haven’t been to KI in over 5 years, but I would think I would still enjoy Diamondback more than Orion if I rode both today. Diamondback is my #5 and I feel it fuels my preferences, notably airtime, more than Orion would.

orion offers the stronger airtime and more unique experience to me, but it's still a very solid ride. my issue is that some of the rattle was a bit too much for me, especially in the valley after the turnaround

I'm with you, but I'm holding off on a final opinion until I get multiple rides on Orion at full capacity. Otherwise I agree with pretty much everything in this video. My only other exception is that I don't think a diamondback belongs in River Town. I would love to see what would have happened if they pretty much kept he logo and colors, but called it Timber Rattler. Today both "timber" and "rattler" make the mind think wood coaster or at least a wood structure, but back in 2009 pre-Mystic and RMC, maybe not so much. The timber rattlesnake is one of 3 venomous snakes in Ohio and given that fact that its endangered sort of lends to the lore of a rare opportunity a la The Beast.
Diamondback is still a top coaster for me. Yes, I prefer SV, but who doesn't. The key is riding it in the back. It is a totally different ride in the back. Disagree with Orion though. It's not as long (time) and doesn't have as much cumulative airtime, but does have more force. The first drop, speed hill, and final twisted hill are better than any single element on Diamondback. Diamondback is a large quantity of good elements whereas Orion has a lower quantity of great elements.
I agree. Orion's high points of the ride (ejector on drop & speed hill and positive g's on helix) are definitely better than Diamonback's high points. Diamonback is so consistently good throughout though, I lean towards preferring it.
That speed hill is awesome, there is a little bump that sends me out of my seat in the back on the first drop, and I get ejector in the back on that drop before the brakes, it makes it better than Leviathan imo but not as good as Fury
I have to get there next year. I haven't ridden either yet.
Kings Island is a great park to get back to if you haven't been in a while.

personally, this rattle snake is pretty boring. it also had a longer line than orion when i went which just infuriated me when trying to get a ride. i wouldve rather have just been on orion
Diamondback is only a better coaster if you ride in the back row. If not Orion is the more complete package
Kings Island is my home park so I get quite a few rides on Diamondback. You absolutely will get ejected on the right day.
Diamondback was the ride I lapped 10 times on a busy day with my dad so It will always have a special place in my heart but orion just chucks element after element at ur face which is why i feel like it's a better ride.........besides the seat belt

Orion is far in away better than Diamondback it’s not even close Orion feels as tall as fast as Fury and still gives me that blistering speed and wind to my face Fury does plus Orion’s hills are way more forceful than Diamondbacks and I think Orion’s drop is even more powerful than Furys Diamondback crawls over every hill while Orion fly’s over its hills.

Maybe its because I’m more of a “gp” guest but I never understood why everyone complains about the rattle on the B&ms. It doesn’t take anything away from the rides.
@@jordane7483 it just gave me a headache which kinda makes me dislike it. Same thing with Banshee, the rattle got to me. That’s why they aren’t as high as I want them to be on my overall list
@ntensity thrills. Fair enough, I guess I am lucky then. I can marathon the beast and racer and be completely fine so a little rattle still feels smooth to me lol.

I kinda really disagree 😬 I think Orion is the obvious better ride, and the main reason is that Diamondback is just so repetitive. I do prefer the smaller amount of airtime Orion has, because for the most part it’s stronger. I also just want to say that Mystic Timbers is better than both of them don’t kill me
Orion really stomps diamondback its not just because its taller and faster it just more forceful and Orions drop is otherworldly
