    It was crowd-pleasing, but for me it would have been more gratifying to see him build up one melody from scratch rather than a hectic medley, assisted by outside notes.
    He's so ridiculously gifted, just watching him assembling a song piecemeal, instrument by instrument would be much more satisfying.

    This was incredible in terms of showing instrumental skill- But I think the musical montage was a little too scattered for the audience to really understand what they were even witnessing. I know they were trying to feature how versatile and talented he is, but it came off more like a musical circus. I was half expecting him to juggle flaming guitars while balanced on a seals nose... This guy is such a genius. I hope he doesn't fall victim to being turned in to some kind of musical entertainment gimmick show.

    • @shastakeys
      @shastakeys 7 лет назад +28

      Talking about him being a genius: I fully agree! In my opinion, it is at its best display in the 3 videos of reharmonizations of musical snippets by his fans. That stuff if pure genius and I prefer it over the circus stuff that get's released as his "offical videos". Probably a matter of taste...

      Think of them as one instrument, with many pieces, just like a drum set can have more pieces than the number of limbs and a keyboard can have more keys than the number of fingers, with loops he can play all these things as one big instrument.

    • @jm1835
      @jm1835 5 лет назад +8

      The guy is a genius and his brain wants to do so many things at once, but he only has one body to execute. I think it would be better to stick with one or two instruments per a song, and then change instruments with each different song to create different textures and vibes. So he could do a guitar/vocals ballad, then next song is bass/drums/vocal funk tune, etc

    the prerecorded stuff makes the live-recorded looping stuff seem fake, which is really unfortunate

    • @martinskanal
      @martinskanal 7 лет назад +121

      why is that unfortunate? He still is best out there, I am sure he won the 1st prize or whatever. He is like the Swiss army knife of music. If he did porn, he´d be a one man orgy.
      BTW, on a slightly different note: I once saw several people playing on the stage at the same time, one guy played the bass, one guy the drums, one the guitar, one sang.. and others were there too, playing. It seemed like they all knew what each other was doing and together they all contributed to a beautiful piece of music.. it was mesmerizing and wonderful.

    • @SenseiHollywood
      @SenseiHollywood 7 лет назад +83

      I think Jacob does a great job making a hybrid of generating the loops live and then triggering sections that are more fleshed out...I talked with his sound guy a little when the tour stopped through, the rationale was that these sections are so complex, it would be too laborious and tedious to build each section/loop live and it would take the audience out of "the moment", and on reflection I tend to agree...plus, given the density of ideas in his music, I'm not sure what constitutes "faking" that...its a pretty short list of people that even understand the harmonic concepts within...its a delicate balance

      I just saw this for the first time. I guess this is what you get when you want Jacob to compile his medlye into 4 minutes. I enjoy it more without pre-recorded stuff because I fits his craft more.

    • @cocoachunky9619
      @cocoachunky9619 6 лет назад +7

      RinZ Excellent point. While I agree, the pre-recorded stuff is off-putting to me, he really is limited here to only 3 minutes (one minute per song). It would just be impossible for him to loop everything or even most things. I don’t think this is really the best format to showcase the “one man band” unfortunately.

I hope you get the mainstream success that these opportunies might offer, because I think you are the most extraordinary musician of your (and perhaps any) generation. I am also utterly impressed by your understanding of how to make mainstream and social media work to create musical success. As your discussions with June Lee and others have brought to light, some of your musical concepts are revolutionary, but your understanding of how to succeed in a post "music business" world are just as impressive.

    Niiiice (though Imogen Heap was triggering sampled/harmonized vocals from a MIDI controller some years back - so I don't think he and MIT invented it)

    • @calchip
      @calchip 5 лет назад +5

      It's not triggering sampled vocals; it is altering Jacob's live-performed voice in real time, without changing the timbre, with up to 12 simultaneous tones, on keyboard-chosen intervals, with near-unlimited flexibility in looping only specific intervals, and other alteration capacity. Ben Bloomberg and Jacob collaborated on developing the Harmonizer, and there is nothing remotely similar out there. There are some simple 4 tone pitch transposers, but not with the sophistication of functionality. Ben and Jacob have both talked about it in various interviews and presentations.

    FUCK that chord he hits at 1:20....this guy is completely otherworldly with his knowledge of harmony. You will not find musicians skilled enough to craft this

    • @Guitarguy234
      @Guitarguy234 7 лет назад +2

      Cameron Hawes not otherworldly. our capacity for musical prowess is equal. it all depends. how much we hold ourselves back is dependent on how much we progress. he doesn't let anything hold him back. you have to have just the right amount of self doubt and lower discouragement.

    • @jazzwonderboy
      @jazzwonderboy 7 лет назад +5

      Er, I beg to differ. You have to study harmony since you were 2 and work all day, and be a genius on top of that... not sure you can just disinhibit your brain and come out with music innovations that stun thousands of other musicians.

      no need to study harmony since a young age to be able to play and craft awkward chords that sounds right.. you just need to practice your hear and instrument

    The lesson for me is from John Holt: we succeed at what we Understand, Practice and Enjoy. It is that simple. I wish educational systems were based around this pedagogy.
