This is the best review I have seen for the Retroid Pocket 2+. I am happy to see a review that focuses on the features that I care about. I think it's funny that there is a lot of talk about the lack of the R3 and L3 on the joysticks. What games is the RP2+ going to play that would even utilize R3 and L3 inputs anyways? So I am glad that you spent time talking about the HDMI output. Which is something that I wanted to know more about.
On most retro handhelds I like the R3 and L3 to open my RetroArch menu, but in reality, not necessary. I can’t even think of PS2 games that make use or R3/L3. Thanks for watching! Appreciate the support!
It's really a way better budget friendly emulation handheld considering that there are stronger options out there like the Aya Neo, but I don't feel comfortable throwing that kind of money when RP2+ already gives so much for the amount of money. I'm happy with RP2+, preserving and keeping retro gaming alive.
I'm quite surprised how little issues are reported with the indigo model. Lots of folks complaining about the screen bleed etc. but it seems indigo has the least issues. I have the indigo model and the backlight bleed is almost nothing. No complaints. Gamecube (at least the games I want to play) work decently enough. PS2 is a joke but that was expected anyway considering how new aethersx2 is.
I already ordered one to try and lets see how it goes. Im very impressed to see this device running the xbox game pass and running a lot of classics from psp...i wasnt looking for a powerfull device, but, a device who allow us to play our favorite classic games. Ps1, Snes, Mame, dreamcast, master system, etc... waiting for delivery
great video, touches on all the main points of the device and doesn't waste time on unnecessary stuff. i got mine about a month ago and so far i've been extremely pleased with it. sure, it's not perfect, and to be honest, i was a bit let down at first since i had unrealistic expectations for the performance of psp and higher emulation. but after using for a month and finding what it can and cannot do, it has really grown on me and i'm very happy with my purchase. it is amazing for snes, nes, genesis, arcade, ps1, n64, gb, gba, dreamcast since the 4:3 screen works well for all of them and has plenty of power and buttons to run them very well. i bought drastic and ds emulation now works fine since you can hotkey the screen swap. as for psp, while it can run the games ok, i'm not completely happy with the experience. as for ps2 and gamecube emulation, i figured they weren't even worth it after trying them. however, i was very happy with the android games since i hate playing them on the touchscreen so now i can actually use physical buttons. currently playing am2r on it, might get stardew valley later on. cons: touchscreen could be better, no L3/R3, odd placement of the selec/start buttons, joysticks feel a bit cheap, buttons took about two weeks to break in (felt grainy at first) pros: amazing price to performance, touchscreen, dpad feels nice, stacked shoulders, found a thingiverse file for a case, wifi/bluetooth, runs android
Can't wait to watch more reviews and videos from you. I'm very surprised to see such a high quality review from a small channel like this. Very impressive!
Great review, I’ve been watching every review of this thing. My main thing is being able to play Pokémon, and knowing it does so well with DS makes me very excited. Going to be purchasing one of these very soon
I've since given my RP2+ to my older brother and recently got the Miyoo Mini V2. While the MM is adorable as heck (ergonomically bad 30min playtimes or more can cause injuries) and can play up to ps1 quite well but the best feature is the OnionOS (custom OS) and the minimal fuss just wish they had a similar OS for the RP2+ because I miss that darn thing.
Great review. Very fair and honest. Like you I was massively disappointed with the 2, but I LOVE the 2+. Dreamcast and N64 is fantastic and what I expected with the 2 but didn't get. Haven't gotten around to the few Gamecube games I know work and want to play, but that is a bonus.
I love these pokemon cartridges in the background c: I just recently got my RP2+ and it 100% replaced my Anbernic 351P. I'm having a blast with Stardew Valley.
One thing to note especially since this is a somewhat informative review. You need a sd card that can read at least 15 mb a second. I didn’t know this when I first got mine. I tried all my 128 gb sd cards I had and they were just to slow. I ordered 2 new 256 gb sd cards from Amazon the same day. So just a heads up.
Great review! Thanks for going through everything, especially the HDMI features. As a little suggestion, it would be nice to see a logo/name of the console you are emulating during footage of your gameplay.
The more I look at this device the more I'm convinced to get one, it might have some issues, but I might be able to make that compromise for the price. Even thought I'll use it for games up to basic N64/PS1 at most, I have a basic library of ports of indie games for android so it is a cool little bonus.
@Scattered Brain for the Gamepass issue, hit home and it will make the screen small and in the lower right corner. Hit the square target ir enlargement arrows and it will pop back full screen.
Unfortunately no idea when this may pop up on Amazon. With a shipping time of ~35 days, it might be a while. When it shows up on Amazon it’s usually with a fairly decent price increase. I’d recommend going through the Retroid site!
Great review! Very excited to get mine in the mail. Got the Retro color scheme. Sucks the buttons might be a little sticky out of the box but it I love the PS1, SNES, Dreamcast vibe the Retro color has. Orange looks beautiful as well imo.
I saw in another video that the buttons stick because some of the models have buttons that are painted over. The paint adds a little extra thickness, making them too thick to fit in the casing without rubbing. I imagine that over time, this issue will go away, or you could sand the opening a little bit. Anyways, I bought a black model because I don't think I want to mess with that.
I'm ordering one next month. I WAS gonna order this version, with the Game Boy coloring. But from this video, it sounds like it has the same issues as the "16bit" SNES colored one. It seems like the issue is that instead of molding the plastic in that color, they took the regular black or white buttons and painted them. The little bit of paint adds just enough extra width to the buttons that they tend to get stuck and feel tighter. Ugh. Now I gotta pick a new color. Either Indigo, Orange, or Black I guess. If I had a tiny buffer Dremel, I'd just shave a bit on the casing to fit the buttons better. But I don't. Question; how bad do the buttons feel? If it's not a big issue, I might get this one anyway... I love the color.
It’s not the end of the world with the sticky buttons. They don’t actually get stuck to the point where I’m concerned they won’t pop back up. I’m a huge fan of the indigo though very GameCube-esque!
Anyone know where I can find retro emulation boxes (kinhank and similar) locally? Looking to pick one up. I usually use Amazon, trying a different way. I also have a Retro Pocket 2 and looking for a loaded SD card to buy from someone. Mine got screwed up. I honestly have no time to do it myself. Thanks everyone!!!!
For the hdmi out can you use this to play Mario party with a bunch of controllers? It would be really cool to play Mario party 2 again with my family on this kind of device or my dad and I can play space invaders again!
Great video! I ordered this device a few days ago, and sounds like I made the right choice. I have never emulated anything, so this is my first emulation handheld, but I am glad you said it is pretty straightforward. Are you running retroarch on this device? Overall, awesome video and great quality. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it! Yes some of the gameplay I show is running off of Retroarch. The lower-end systems: NES SNES Genesis GBC and GBA. Some Dreamcast games also run well off of it. For other systems I use standalone emulators. They’re all on the Google Play store. For example for DS you need the Drastic emulator which is not free but is extremely well made. For GameCube you need to get the Dolphin apk of GitHub since the version you need isn’t in the play store
Sooo close to smooth GC emulation on such a small handheld. I was going to buy this to replace my rg351mp but I'm going to wait for the next iteration or better performance on the software side of things for GC and N64. For now I've got enough PSX and GBA games to hold me over and the 351mp does just fine. Thanks for the review! You almost got me to buy one anyway, lol.
Using the included Retroid Launcher it’s pretty solid in some areas. DIG, RESET Collection, etc. are some good options too but I didn’t get a chance to test them out with this device
@@ScatteredBrain I gotcha, I always go with DIG but RESET Collection has a really nice theme but the game list is limited to viewing just 1 game at a time.
I'm still very happy with the base RP2. As I mainly play Mega Drive, Snes, Ps1 and Neo Geo games it handles them all superbly. It's a shame that it struggles with Dreamcast titles, some of them are still playable, but only just... I may upgrade to the 2 plus just so DC games run well. It's not really that much cheaper just to buy the PCB. Plus you miss out on the touch screen and button upgrades...
It comes off a bit weird that it’s released but says pre order. My guess is they wait for a certain number of orders and then make a run which is why shipping takes some time. Here’s my shipping times for both of my devices: DMG Style - ordered Oct 30, delivered Jan 3 Indigo Style - ordered Nov 28, delivered Jan 6
I ordered mine the other day. I'm guessing it should be here by January 😳🤣 Yes the downfall is that I have to install my own roms. I'm not sure what rom files will play the best or where to get them on my laptop, to transfer on the SD card. Google was no help 🤦🏼♂️ Nice video New subscriber here!!
You’ll have time to curate your collection then 😂. It’s not a matter of “which ROMs will play the best”. I would just get a collection started and organized, and you can try everything out once the device arrives! A few pointers I can say are: Android is not picky about ROM location on the SD card, so get a flash drive if you don’t want your ROMs taking up space on your computer - and also don’t bother loading up an SD card until you get the device. You will need to format the SD card for Android FIRST, and THEN you can load up the files. I recommend a folder on the SD card called “ROMs” or “Games” and then inside of that folder to keep a sub-folder for each of your gaming systems. This will work well for emulator apps, launchers, and retroarch. Hope you get your device soon!
@@ScatteredBrain Thanks for the advice. I have a decent amount of roms, but will definitely get more. I haven't seen many start up videos on formatting the SD card for this yet. I just actually got 2 32g SD cards today. So I'll be ready. It says it's still sitting in Hong Kong 🤦🏼♂️
I do think the 351v is a fantastic device, but if you’re after performance, there’s no comparison. If you’re after gaming through PS1 and not really much N64 the rg351v is perfect.
unfortunately, it seems to be a while to deliver once you order. It looks like they save up for a bulk of orders and make a run of devices. Some people’s orders are taking 2-3 months. But its worth the wait! Great device!
Thanks for watching! The RP2+ does not come pre-loaded with games. The setup will help you get some of the necessary apps installed but no games are included (and while it seems like a hassle to build your own game collection, this is MUCH better in the long run!)
Hard to say when that will happen. The unfortunate thing with these devices when they make it to Amazon is they get marked up quite a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s listed on Amazon for $150 or more when it gets to that point.
I'd like to see you try to play Wind Waker at 30FPS, I can't seem to get it to run at atleast 30FPS Without turning the quality down to 0.5. Give me your input on how to fix this please.
Try to play N64 titles like the first Quake ,it's known as Quake-64 ,, and then try Resident Evil 2 ,, N64 version ,, if you get those to work properly ,then try "TopGear Overdrive" ,,N64 vers ,,finally try "Conkers Bad Fur Day" , N64 vers ,,, I would be amazed if Retroid plays these properly or at all ,,,good luck 😸🎮😁😎👍
The best spec for the price, but it's far from a plug and play experience, and that means if you factor in the hassle of getting it to a state where you can play games with it, might as well modify an old phone, psp etc...
PSP is definitely not as powerful as this - but yes I do agree! This isn’t plug and play; you’ll need to spend some time to load in games and tweaks some settings for some emulators. I’d recommend checking out my RP3 video - Retroid is really making big leaps towards the “perfect” device (although RP3 isn’t quite perfect either 😂)
Because GameCube performance was so heavily degraded, I actually haven’t tried PS2 emulation on the RP2+ at all. If I do I’ll let you know how it does!
@@ScatteredBrain Nah, it's okay. I wouldn't expect PS2 to run well. I thought it was weird that they included it as an option during setup. I'll just be happy with N64, Mame, and PS1 to be honest. And if it can run Dreamcast, that's just a bonus. Even my Ryzen 3700x with an Nvidia 2070 Super struggles to run some PS2 games, so I would not expect a handheld to do that.
ah yeah with the extra taxes and stuff, it definitely makes the value diluted. That's unfortunate.. but hopefully we'll see this device become more readily available and maybe even purchasable through other channels!
Unfortunately this is your best bang for your buck when it comes to emulating more systems better. Check out my other handheld reviews. Depending on the systems out there, there are some pretty awesome alternatives! I’m a huge fan of the RGB10 Max 2, the PocketGo S30, and the Anbernic RG351m
still sucks when it gets side by side shoulder buttons and wide screen and has RGB not cheap blue led (ayn odin) and has a Fat chunky body like a china ps2 controller like the anbernic 512 so my hands with these cheap square bricks
@@ScatteredBrain you really want me to tell you? :D Check at around 12:50 theres a dead pixel at the upper left part of the screen. I saw it during the F-Zero gameplay too, here its more clear tho. Its also present at around 10:25 during crazy taxi gameplay.

12:22 what is the name of that game?
Comix Zone!
@@ScatteredBrain thanks!
Which NDS emulator support custom layout?
The DraStic emulator
Can you use a FTP client on this?
I don’t see why not! I haven’t tried but I’m sure it works fine with any FTP Android app!
I'd like to see you try to play Wind Waker at 30FPS, I can't seem to get it to run at atleast 30FPS Without turning the quality down to 0.5. Give me your input on how to fix this please.
The new software update on the RP2+ should help but in most cases GameCube games need to be severely downscaled to play well
Try to play N64 titles like the first Quake ,it's known as Quake-64 ,, and then try Resident Evil 2 ,, N64 version ,, if you get those to work properly ,then try "TopGear Overdrive" ,,N64 vers ,,finally try "Conkers Bad Fur Day" , N64 vers ,,, I would be amazed if Retroid plays these properly or at all ,,,good luck 😸🎮😁😎👍
I wish I could get it but it's not for sale anymore
I think the Retroid Pocket 3+ is the device to consider now. Thanks for watching!
@@ScatteredBrain I didn't watch
you forgot to put the google sheet link
Ah! I knew I was forgetting something! Just added (Also here it is: bit.ly/3FFUN8h).
Thanks for the reminder!
can it play old dos game like carmen sandiego thanks
There are DOS emulators for Android, but if the game requires a mouse/keyboard it may not be a ton of fun to play or emulate on one of these devices.
Where can i orfer this from in USA?
Here’s the link to the Retroid store! bit.ly/3qDbkWl
Is this mainstream console or like a hacked device?
This is the device with no “hacks” or anything. As far as it being mainstream… you won’t find these devices in retail stores or anything like that.
I'm guessing PS2 emulation performance is no good?
Great review!
If it only were $100 here though... after paying for shipping, VAT and taxes, I'm looking at almost $200. Yeah...no.
ah yeah with the extra taxes and stuff, it definitely makes the value diluted. That's unfortunate.. but hopefully we'll see this device become more readily available and maybe even purchasable through other channels!
Is this even out? I go to their website and it always says preorder.
It says pre order but it just takes a bit of time for a turnaround to receive the device
@@ScatteredBrain ah dang. Is there a handheld like this with similar performance that just costs a lol more but is readily available?
Unfortunately this is your best bang for your buck when it comes to emulating more systems better. Check out my other handheld reviews. Depending on the systems out there, there are some pretty awesome alternatives!
I’m a huge fan of the RGB10 Max 2, the PocketGo S30, and the Anbernic RG351m
What’s the game at 12:21?
Comix Zone!
@@ScatteredBrain thank you!!
14:20 you might want to change your password after this
😂 “asdfg” was just to prove a point. Thanks though!
Nice video 🙂
Thanks 😁
still sucks when it gets side by side shoulder buttons and wide screen and has RGB not cheap blue led (ayn odin) and has a Fat chunky body like a china ps2 controller like the anbernic 512 so my hands with these cheap square bricks
How did u get GTA?
From the Google Play Store!
I don't understand why he's using Asian ROMs. It doesn't come with any ROMs so why not use the good American and PAL ROMs?
never use crappy PAL roms when theres ntsc
*DOES NOT HAVE R3 OR L3*
Accurate
i play xbox cloud gaming on the device
Nice
my experience with the device was horrendous and I wouldn´t recomend it to anyone.
Why do you say that?
45 seconds to boot? I'll pass
the cost of Android I guess, but once its booted, you can just sleep the device. So yeah there are tradeoffs.
you have a dead pixel
Where? I just looked through the video and took a look at my device and cant see it! I’m sure once I do I’ll never unsee it though 😂
@@ScatteredBrain you really want me to tell you? :D Check at around 12:50 theres a dead pixel at the upper left part of the screen. I saw it during the F-Zero gameplay too, here its more clear tho. Its also present at around 10:25 during crazy taxi gameplay.
