    Update for those who want to play Dead Cells. You can change the resolution to "high resolution" in the settings to make the content legible. But you won't be able to read the Options menu to make that change. In the main startup menu, select Options (the second option), then Video (second option), and then the "High resolution" option will be the second setting (the first checkbox). The text will be tiny, but readable. You will also want to change the controls in the settings as the A/B and X/Y are natively swapped.

    The touchscreen actually does work really well in Drastic BUT you have to deactivate the touch screen overlay button functionality. It's confusing because you can set the opacity to 0, but you have to go into a different menu to deactivate the buttons altogether. If you don't deactivate them, they will get in the way of the touch screen swipes, especially towards the bottom of the screen where the overlay buttons usually are.

    Russ, I think we would all prefer a long video with perhaps too much info than a short one that feels like it obviously glossed over information that could help viewers make purchase decisions. Especially when your videos are so organized with chapters and timestamps for those who don't want certain info. Thanks!

    For ps1 emulation on Retroarch (rearmed core) might be throttled if rewind functionality is on. The rewind functionality actually impacts the performance for PS1 by a lot as it tries to save those frames on memory. I could be be wrong since I don’t have the device in person but that was the case for many retro handheld devices.

    It has been very frustrating for me to research on this device, because nobody (that I know of, at least) cared enough to mention or consider the complications of the screen size/resolution when it comes to some games. All I kept finding was people showcasing the obvious (performance on GB, SNES, PS1, N64 DC etc.) and no discussion on game streaming or android games in detail, so I have to thank you for giving the time to actually talk about them!

  • @misterkeebler

    Great overall review. The addition of you explaining the settings you were using while showing off gameplay from the tougher consoles makes for a much more transparent presentation. And you touched on some aspects I hadnt seen mentioned yet, like the touchscreen. I feel more confident in knowing what to expect after watching this. And I agree it is still a great value for $99, though Retroid really needs to look into their order processing times and shipping solutions. Things are rough right now for everyone, but other companies big and small are doing things faster still.

      you don't need 3rd party app for that. just go to developer settings > smallest width. bigger number = more dpi.

    Retroid are the little guys who I really want to see succeed, but even taking their extremely low price, less than half the latest models from their competition, into account, there's just some things that are close but not quite good enough. Like, at $99, I don't care about PSP, Gamecube, or PS2 performance. Anything that works is a bonus. A 1x resolution on PS1 games is fine, since some PS1 games were 480i anyway, upping the internal resolution might lead to visual artifacts in menu screens, particularly for RPGs. They've done great work making the software more intuitive than before, and switching to conductive rubber for the buttons is a great move. I was one of the ones who really hated the feel of the RP2's D-pad.
    It's QA things like the touch screen not working well in its lower third, or the buttons not fitting after they're painted, that spoil it. Little things like the lack of L3 and R3, and sticking with a slider on the right. Taki pointed out some light bleed from uneven pressure on the screen, because whichever factory is slapping these together isn't really doing so with care.
    Right now, while it's an older device, you can get an RG351P from Anbernic for the same price, and you'll probably be happier for it. If you hold off until your next pay day, you can get the RG351MP for another $50, and have a MUCH better experience given all the work the community has done on the RK3326 devices. Gamecube, PS2, and PSP are almost entirely out of reach here, too, but what works works well, and the physical build of the device is better.

    • @misterkeebler
      @misterkeebler 2 года назад +3

      I could agree with that opinion too. For a budget device, I would also be pretty likely to recommend a 351p. It's a device you can actually get for under $100 including shipping, has very beginner friendly custom firmware available for it, and you can even get it on Amazon to have it within a couple days. If RP2+ had a similar cheap shipping option that didn't take weeks to arrive, it would be a bit closer.

    • @NoobixCube
      @NoobixCube 2 года назад +1

      @@misterkeebler for people who already use Android phones or tablets, and have literally no idea about emulation handhelds, I might recommend a Retroid Pocket over an a Linux device, and in fairness it does seem like a much better out of box experience. It's just the little things that make the RP2+ fall short compared to similarly priced competitors.

    • @misterkeebler
      @misterkeebler 2 года назад

      @@NoobixCube yeah I guess it depends. Personally, I see the Linux devices with custom firmware as even more beginner friendly with the assumption that they can follow a guide for the firmware install because the better firmwares like 351Elec basically take care of all the emulator configurations coded in for you. With android, you have some nice frontend emulators but you're often going to have to configure them yourself. I might be just less aware of what's available for android, but ive been doing some emulation on another android handheld recently and it's definitely some testing on my part to set things up.

      Cloud gaming is getting big and the Retroid 2+, being an Android device, does it well. I was playing Forza Horizon 5 on mine last night. MSFS2020 runs like butter. I'm not sure if those Linux devices are compatible with the apps without having to jump through a whole bunch of hoops, but they are directly supported by Android so it's just download, login, play XBox One games on a handheld.

Then I followed the PCB upgrade video of the Retroid Pocket 2 from Takii 2's channel as it was a great tutorial of opening the device to get at the buttons. I used the file to file not the buttons but the actual holes that the buttons fit into, pretty much the shell of the unit, only a small amount, happy to say it was actually easy to do and is working perfectly now, still a bit peeved I had to do that but don't be afraid to give it go, I've been well chuffed with the device overall and happy I have the coloured buttons.

      i have just got a max 2 personally i think the best ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing of the handhelds that go up to ps1 it does abit of dreamcast etc its also patchy with n64 but im not looking to play or seek out those sort of games.... max 2 is costlier than the pocket 2+ too by about 30 or so more bucks depending on card size... so the pocket does have bang for the buck going for it...
      but reason i chose max 2 was large screen size, symmetrical sticks, grips and stacked shoulders.... and i didnt know about pocket 2+ XD but sub 100 sounds awesome which makes the 552 at 200+ seem crazy when the powkiddy x18s also a very capable device at 160+
      or you could buy a quallity budget chinese phone at 100 - 150 - 200 and blows all of these devices away on emulation... im thinking realme or poco x3 f3??? or redmi?? phone prices differ depending on the size of storage etc but the chips inside at those sort of prices is also pointing to the future of other retro handhelds coming in the next few months few years

      From a price/performance point of view, no doubt. As far as ergonomics, UX, portability, etc., go, I found that the Android phone experience was way worse than a dedicated device's, and that the time investment to get a fully functional set-up was much longer. If you're mainly interested in 6th-gen consoles and newer, it really is the only option, though.

    • @JimIBobIJones
      @JimIBobIJones 2 года назад +2

      @@FranzKafkaRockOpera I would agree on the set-up time, but the "tinkering" element is part of the appeal for me. Even if its just through customising a front-end, having an input makes it feel like your own - a bit like setting up a raspberry pi for emulation.
      You are also seeing pretty much all the mainstream dedicated handhelds go down the android route with a custom front-end (with Mediatek processors and their weak GPUs rather than snapdragon/adreno). The experience is quickly becoming a weaker version of what you would get with your phone.
      Portability and ergonomics wise, I have found the opposite.
      I'm always going to have my phone in my pocket and my tablet in my bag. A handheld is an additional device you wouldn't otherwise lug around.
      Granted I have only ever owned one dedicated emulator (the RG350) but the buttons and controls were extremely cramped and the analogue sticks and buttons got in each other's way - rather unpleasant than ergonomic.
      Both of my android controllers have been much more comfortable to use - an 8bit do with a phone clip and more recently a ipega 9083b telescoping one for my tablet.

Taki was going for maintaining speed with less regard to accuracy. The biggest difference you can tell is watching these two play Final Fantasy X. Russ's slowed down more while Taki was faster, but Taki sped up the game to run faster (i think 140%) which caused sped up audio that would sometimes glitch, and more gameplay stutters.

    Taki Udon can play a lot of those games with little to no issue so you may need to revise your settings.

    I ordered the 16-Bit model on Christmas. I hope I don't have the same button issues that you had, but I am absolutely psyched to get mine!

    I really was excited about the new generation of retro handhelds after owning RG351 (love) and RP2 (hate). So I was about to give a try with RP2+. But after EU got serious about taxes and China, RP2+ in Poland would cost me total 138 USD. So I thought: maybe wait for for Odin but then let’s say 240 USD for BASE, then add 12$ for shipping, 23% tax over that and we arrive at 310 USD for me (there is still possibility of additional import duties). Base steam deck with taxes (and shipping i think) is priced in Poland at 1900PLN = 469$. So lets be frank: I would love new retro gadget but price wise I will wait for reviews of Steam Deck (windows, linux, steam os, batocera, 4k output) and then decide.

    I think it's definitely worth the price, however for what I have currently in portable emu consoles, this will be a pass. Not to mention, while I definitely have interest in portable emu consoles, I still enjoy emulating on my pc/laptop with a nice controller of my choosing, and can emulate anything available. Until I see major improvements in chipsets, 100% happiness with buttons/controllers, and game emulation, I won't be inking up on any more of these until I feel it's worth spending more. I currently have 2 portable consoles that I'm happy with for the convenience and portability, but I feel like the market is just milking buyers with very minor improvements on each new console...HOWEVER, I love your videos and reviews, you're my go-to for these reviews! AAA+++

      yup just got a max2 its perfect..... anybody buying one of these and expecting perfect ps2 n64 etc need to wait 1 - 2 years at least for a perfect performance and price.... its almost here.... with these companies going with new chips... 552 x18s and companies going with mobile phone chips... you got odin you got new aya if powkiddy squeezed the x18s into a max3 that would be perfect... heck if anbernic squeezed the 552 into a max2 form it would be perfect.... sub 200 would be possibly doable.... x18s at 170? anything at 250 and above needs to be super special as your knocking on sony nintendos door.... but these chinese devices are upping the game..... more devices the merrier i say.... more competition more choice..... i get where your coming from too.... im hoping a slightly improved max2+ with stereo speakers doesnt come out to annoy me lol

    I just order this and hope it will be here soon. I was a little disappointed that there seems to be a 45 day wait for this. Hope it's worth it.
