Obviously this was really well played, but often only moves aren't as hard to find as best moves in more nuanced positions. For example, the very next move: White has a very transparent threat: Bf6. Black's next move has to deal with the possibility of White promoting their pawns. You really only have to consider Kf7 and Kg8 (and sidenote: I think Kg8 is also fine? So not sure this even is a onlymove) - the fact that our opponent has a very concrete threat makes our move an only move, but also makes it easier to see what our best move is. The next move makes it even clearer: after h7 any decent amateur player would play Kg7. Next move: any Knight move loses on the spot, moving the King away from h8 loses on the spot, b4 just throws away a pawn, so the only candidates are Kh8, c3 and e5. (and Kh8 also quickly disappears if you calculate it a bit, which is very doable even for amateur players). Final example: 44. e5 This looks super impressive at first, but it really doesn't take that long to see it is the only reasonable option: b4 just throws away a pawn and frees up the white king, moving the knight loses on the spot because of Bf6. Moving the King away from h8 also loses on the spot, so what even would be our alternative move? Kh8 again. The fact that there is only one other alternative move makes this much easier for Hikaru to calculate. And indeed, as we can see by looking at time spent after 38 Hikaru was mainly just going through the motions and played fairly quickly. The far more impressive part of the endgame was the handful of moves leading up to 38. a4: The very deliberate transformation of the position with the Rooktrade and the very ambiguous moves where you can't just calculated to a loss 5 moves after a candidate move, but have to actually very thoroughly know what everything does in the position.
before Hikaro played 40.. c3, Benjamin Bok, commentating, said “Hopefully Hikaru takes a nice long think to find c3, his only chance.”. Instead Hikaru blitzed it in seconds. Commentators were stunned.
After his 39th minute he got enough time to calculate all posible lines as Ali spend that much time for his 40th move and only few lines are remaining, from starting from 40 th move hikaru was playing like a computer, moving best moves without thinking much, because all remaining lines are already there in his mind. He is very lucky that ali gave him that much time before c3 because he should have blundered it otherwise with only 1 min remaining in his clock.
What is so insane about c3? Have people never studied any endgames? Of course you have to trade as many pawns as possible, if you don’t play c3 nothing else works
@@KnightToRemember I defer to Benjamin Bok's commentary during the game. He was surprised Hikaru made that move so quickly. I'm sure you're a better player than me (seriously).

It worked out this time, but it's not gonna work out every time. He did the exact same thing with Aronian and lost without even that much of a chance. Hikaru needs to stop playing into very sharp theory, especially that in which his king is left weak. I've noticed, out of the games in which Hikaru lost/was losing at some point in, a good chunk were due to him underestimating the weakness of his king. I've noticed that in his blitz games as well - he would often make a move totally nonchalantly and I'd think to myself, "that's a very bold move - why is he playing it like it's no big deal?"; I used to think that's just because he has 800 rating points on me and I don't know what I'm talking about, but it seems like I might've been onto something. I honestly think that, if he could find ways to avoid playing into very sharp prep, he could easily win the Candidates. It might still happen, but it's going to take a lot more from him to. He can't keep relying on his defensive abilities every game - at some point, the opponent will be more ruthless (like Fabi did in the first round) or he will make a mistake, and he's just going to start losing games.

It's crazy how super GMs can take the positions with so much ease even if they miss some critical positional ideas because it's so naturnal for a human to miss moves... This is just RAW SKILL displayed here, what Hikaru is able to showcase in this game proves that when he is on form and when he's trying his absolute best, he's actually the best. I'm not sure if Magnus would have spotted all of these defensive moves.
Personally thought this was Hikaru's best game. Ali was so prepared and moved so quickly, and there were many instances during this game where Hikaru could have blundered into a loss. Winning 1/2 a point against a great and well prepared player, that's got to feel good. For the Candidates, I also think it's great to see how close the players are. Also, that the players are really well prepared and are absolutely going for it. This is such a joy for me to watch, and I thank Hikaru for giving us insights, during the tornament, in an understandable way.
Imagine Hikaru wins with the black pieces against Rapport tomorrow. The motivation boost could be enough to take down Nepo with white the day after. At least that is what I hope for.

Le Cd5 contrôle l'échiquier. Bravo à Hikaru pour cette formidable partie ! Incroyable finale ! Le fait que Hikaru a survécu à cette bonne préparation d'Alireza prouve la qualité et la grande combativité d'Hikaru!
This is like a magician revealing their tricks after the show. Respect man!
"... you're not really playing against an opponent, you're playing against a machine, and that is never what you want to do... " That is the sort of insight I love from Hikaru. It has nothing to do with mediocre players like myself, but it is an interesting insight into the super GM world.
Love the recaps! I missed your whole game yesterday so I also really appreciate you not giving away the result at the beginning of the video because I did miss the game. Makes the recap a lot more intense not know what the result was!
Never underestimate the power of a monster knight in the endgame 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾great job, a knight and a pawn held down the center both un protected but neither touchable. SMH 🤦🏾♂️ how sway!
Hikaru recap: he sacs of course
Levy recap: HE SACS THE KNIIIIIIIIIGT!!!!!!
@@sokunine he thinks of himself first as an entertainer than a chess players, he overreact to make ppl with elo 600-1200 have fun watchin the match, most ppl when see a piece sack , they are 'wow', so yeah xD
"If he trades he can actually lose this, because of the wide peepos"
Thanks a lot for giving us your brilliant analysis after each battle on the board considering this moment when you play your chance to challenge the world champion... I consider this, as most of the chess community, golden material. So thank and giving the circumstances if you feel eventually too tired during the coming rounds to do this recap, no worries, I forgive you... but only once ;) Keep it up, champ! you are one of my favorite candidates!
Hikarus defense in this game was better than any fortress could ever be. I wish you all the best for the rest of the candidates, you are going to rock it!!
That was an amazing end game calculation! You created a draw from what should have been a lost position. GL on the rest of the tournament and I am cheering for you to win it all.
Finding a way to simplify that middlegame, out of his supergm’s deep prep, into a drawing endgame. Absolutely incredible stuff!
Those long pauses had me screaming, "You got this, Hikaru! Think it through." And you did! 👏
Thumbnail designer is always bringing heat, deserves a raise
Best thumbnails in the business imho.
Thanks!
Dang these recap videos are getting so many views. Nice dude
been a long time watcher, but this defense was truly a work of art. just subscribed and first ever (and probably only) yt comment. rooting for you!
It's crazy how super GMs can take the positions with so much ease even if they miss some critical positional ideas because it's so naturnal for a human to miss moves... But I being a mere 1400-1600 in rapid play 1000-1200 in blitz feel so terrible for every move and ideas I miss during the games.... I definitely need to learn to take it easy from the top GMs like Hikaru... Thanks for the videos... Good luck man.
Love these breakdowns, gives me the courage to go and practice some more, even if I keep getting pummeled lol
Awesome recap. GL for the rest of tournament. Rooting for u from New Zealand bro!
I literally got second hand stress watching this game, I was so happy when you pulled it out.
I have no doubt streaming has helped, the constant feedback you get from streaming even through airing your thoughts definitely pays off. Also regarding streaming: the first great online chess performer in history, and there’s only one first!
Dear Hikaru, congrats on this most remarkable game! In my humble opinion it is one of your finest classical games ever. It was awesome and unbelievably tense. All the best in the further tourney!
Hikaru just proved why he is one of the best Chess Grandmasters to ever exist.
Okay calm down but this will go down as a great match and one of the best ever endgames.
GMs are ice cold man... playing such a tricky end game In such a high profile event and navigating a draw, that's just incredible mental stamina and knowledge. id have messed this up a million different ways in either color. thanks for the recaps Hikaru!!!
This is just RAW SKILL displayed here, what Hikaru is able to showcase in this game proves that when he is on form and when he's trying his absolute best, he's actually the best. I'm not sure if Magnus would have spotted all of these defensive moves.
Rooting for you bro - your transparency of ultra-level-chess is unparalleled
Watching you playing is just pure art. So excited to watch your next games.
Thank you for making this recap videos .... You're awesome
Not only was 41...c3 a gigachad move, but the way it was blitzed out was like a punch to the gut. It took Alireza over an hour to get his breath back
Amazing defense! Looking forward to more exciting games. Thanks for the recap and rest well.
Hikaru you’re just my hero! Hope you win it all, very well deserved man
Outstanding Hikaru! Brilliant game. Hope you have a restful rest day.
Nobody else does this. Hikaru is one of a kind. This game is a lesson in the knight outpost and then brilliant endgame play.
Imagine Hikaru wins with the black pieces against Rapport tomorrow. The motivation boost could be enough to take down Nepo with white the day after. At least that is what I hope for.
Es la única persona en el planeta que luego de jugar una partida de un candidatos sube un vídeo del análisis de su partida, una locura lo que hace Hikaru por su comunidad
Compliments Grandmaster, not only you play wonderful games, (c3!! and e5!! Two superior category moves) you also find the time to analize them, moreover you are not worried your opponents can get some advantages looking your video.
When I started studying chess, in 1972 after the Fischer-Spassky it would have been a dream listening a Candidate analysis after the game!
Thank you!
Let´s give credit to Firouzja too. Only a clash of two Super GM´s can result in such a beautiful tense game.
