- Who wants to get started framing? In this video we get into squaring up and snapping out mudsill, how to layout, drill and set mudsill, and framing pony walls. You'll see two lasers from Stabila that speed this up. The LA180L layout station for fast square and the LA350 for shooting level. Take the time on the mudsill and the rest of the framing will go together well.
You'll also see how we shoot heights for pony walls and fasten to the concrete with a pneumatic concrete nailer, the Max HN120.

I like that saying: we are not machinist, we are framers. Every time I try to get involve in framing “framers” get mad at me, they say that they are not cabinet makers. I really would like to come across framers like you guys and have the opportunity to work along.. here in socal it’s all about production, get it done and move onto the next…

In the first video he he shows some pretty darn instrument to very easy find the place where to drill the holes in the mud sill. I am not a expert, I am from the Netherlands, greetings. I really don't like strip nail guns either but my biggest pro tip is when I grab a handful of strips, I quickly orient them all the same as I walk to where I'm working and I put them in my pouch in a manner so that when my hand grabs them, they are positioned ready to slip into the gun. No flipping, spinning rotating, I don't want to think. The less I think, the better hahaha.

I taught my crew to measure everything to the sixteenth. We wrote it as 12 4 but the 4 had a line under it. That’s twelve and a quarter. To measure to 1/32 accuracy we simply add a plus sign to the 4+. So that’s twelve and nine thirty seconds, but we never said thirty seconds. It was twelve and four plus. You guessed it, we were finish carpenters. The real beauty of this system is using only one denominator, sixteenths.
I spend a fair amount of time watching your videos. I love them - thanks for teaching and keeping it entertaining.
My career is actually in documentary and commercial film, but because of these videos (and I enjoy it) I’ve recently applied to part time construction work.

a little surprised that thorough fellows such as yourselves don’t paint cut mud sill ends with Jasco or some such. You can squirt a bit around the bolts with a re-purposed dish soap bottle too.
That's a good point. There isn't a need to because the mudsill will stay dry and the cut ends aren't absorbing water through the cut ends.

So not to critique
When you snap your line for square, all you have to do is position the sill plate on top of the anchor bolts and give it a whack with that three pound sledge of yours and it will indent the bottom side of the plate. Flip the plate over. Drill your holes and BAM. Perfect every time. Even if the bolt is slightly off center
Wont work unless all the bolts are plumb which is unlikely especially considering how high out of the concrete they are
Surprised to see your mud sill install. We use a foam seal and tin termite barrier under the sill plate. Guess that isn't code in your area.
At 14:30 you nailed a 2x6 on outside of the sill plate, Why? what is purpose? I'm building my house this spring, and your videos are absolutely the BEST construction videos on RUclips. keeping the 'oops' moments in the videos is important. adds entertainment value ;)
He was doing layout on the top plate and the mud sill at the same time. He nailed them together to keep them aligned for his marks to be accurate. The key to 24"OC framing is alignment of the vertical members between floors. The studs above need to be in vertical alignment with the studs below for proper load bearing.

There's a whole specified way to talk to prevent miscommunication - it's used by the military and air traffic control on the radios.
Three = TREE
Four = FOW-WER
Five = FIFE

Do you find it just as okay to nail the 3 toenails from the same side versus the slow34 but I feel more secure way to go 2 from one side and 1 from the other? I feel it has less opportunity to slide one way or the other. It probably would add an extra few seconds to each toe nailed stud but I wonder if it’s worth it
The "slide" only occurs on the first nail. So, if using a nail gun, there is no need to alternate to avoid banging the wood out of alignment like when hand nailing. There is no horizontal stress on the wood, so 3 on one side are more than enough to keep the board in place when under load.
Curious about pony walls in the crawl space. I'm guessing that using the framed pony walls is less expensive than beams?
Less expensive and also less flex in the floor above it.

This might sound strange, but wiping with your hand is a habit you should try to get rid of. Use a brush. Even with gloves, one day you will wipe and get a splinter or a damn cut from a piece of swarf. That ruins your day.

Callouts are funny, 61 and an eighth can quickly turn into 60 and 1/8th. Again, don't make me think, we don't do thinking around here, I emphasize the division of whole numbers to fractions.
That is why they call out 6 1 and 2 for 61&1/8. The AND is the indicator of the upcoming fraction. 6 1 and 2 can not be mistaken. Like he said, 5 8 and 2 instead of fifty-eight and 1/8th. I learned that 28 years ago by overhearing the drywall guys on a commercial job. Always call out whole individual numbers with an AND. If no fraction, then say 6 1 even. Never had a helper misunderstand me using this system for 28 years.
What are the 3 pads for in those footings under the pony walls? Where is the crawlspace entrance? And why not have a larger opening in each pony wall for crawling through to do work?
Those pads are to carry point loads from the roof. The crawl hatch will be under the stairs and doesn't need to be any bigger. It is big enough for future access. No mechanicals down there.

Any reason why you couldn't immediately drill the hole when you measure the bolt off the blue line onto the mudsill? Would save you a trip up and down the board, literally. Love the content, keep rockin !
Then you would have to pull out your tape and pencil for each bolt
@@martin3911 that doesnt make sense since he already pulled his square on one trip to mark linear on the board for bolt "x" axis, if he used his martinez speed square, that he has, he could hold it on the blue line, mentally note the distance to the center of the bolt on the concrete for the "y"axis, and then move his square to the board, mentally transfer that number and drill immediately, placing the drill tip on the needed measurement, doesnt take a third trip up and down the board, plain and simple, saves time and energy.

You guys don’t need sill seal under your mud sill? Here in the northeast team must have it.
That's what I'd like to know. Even if it isn't required by code, I would still use it just as extra insurance in case it rains for two weeks straight and moisture wicks up into the sill plate.
The "J" bolts look rusted, which I assume are just standard "J" bolts and not hot dip galvanized. I could be wrong since you can't see them that clearly in the video. In either case, pretty sure the bolts are supposed to be HDG when I'm contact with pressure treated wood
Hopefully when the house is dried in, the plate and bolts stay dry, if not, there's bigger problems than bolts rusting.
@@ZipKickGo The issue david was referring too was not rusting but corroding with a pressure treated timber.
@@FixthisCD by rusting I referred to corroding. If the wood stays dried in, it will be fine. All houses I build in my province are set with non-galvanized J's and they hold up.

Nope, no need when using PT lumber. Since it's a vented crawl space no point in trying to air seal that connection

There isn't a benefit here when we use treated lumber for sills.
Do you not pour flooring in your crawlspace ?
He covered that in a previous video. The vapor barrier goes down AFTER the subs are done so it is not torn up during construction.

You just leave the exposed dirt in the crawl space? Why not at least put a plastic vapor barrier with a little rock on top? Doesn't that moisture cause issues??
Perkins Builders wait until the roof is on. That way moisture isn't sitting on top of the barrier.

Take the mudsill and place it over the anchor bolts and smack it with a hammer over each bolt. It will make a dent in the board and you'll know exactly where to put the holes. Some of the anchor bolts may be a little too low to dent the board, so drill out the holes for the higher ones first, then put the board back on over the bolts and smack it again and the lower ones will show up on the board. Way faster than the old fashioned method. I promise

Is it just me or are crawlspaces the biggest waste of time/space. Like I’d rather just build a full basement or just a slab
Cost is the issue. A slab requires a flat, level surface, have to bring in dirt or dig it out which changes a lot of the look of the house on an uneven lot. A basement is tens of thou$and$ of $$$ more.
