    As tempting as it is to show these lasers cutting speeded up, it really does a disservice to the potential buyers of these tools. If you are going to show it cutting speeded up, at least tell us how speeded up it is, 2x, 3x. 5x and so on.

    Seems like they ran into the same issue I had when I built my 2nd upgraded cnc router: I forgot to accommodate the width of the carriage...oops. I wanted my machine to be able to do 36" x 60" but lost 3" on each end of each axis due to the carriage being 6" wide. OOPS.
    I know they'd have to change all the components and packaging to accommodate the larger laser so it would be costly.

    Hi Ryan
    Thank you for providing a great evaluation of XTool 20 watt diode laser. I am seriously considering replacing a very old but still working 25 watt Co2 machine. My hesitancy with the XTool has been two fold. One is the lack of responsiveness of XTool to my initial contact with them. I’m still waiting. If I can’t get hold of them prior to buying the machine what will it be like when I need parts or perhaps a simple question in the future. As much effort that XTool has put into their marketing I would think they would be equally capable in answering a couple of pre-sales question
    Two since I do more cutting than engraving. The thickest material I cut (slow speed high power single pass on my Co2 laser) is 3mm MDF and occasionally 1/8th acrylic. I assume the XTool would do it but I am concerned with the kerf. I suppose part of the answer to this would be the diameter of the beam at optimum focus.
    Ryan if you have any thoughts or answer’s I would greatly appreciate them. For me it’s kind of like a Harbor Freight tool purchase. Some times it turns out to be a great value for the occasional user. But in some cases not. As I stand by for a response from XTool. It may be your opinion that helps me make a yes or no decision on this XTool.
    Ryan thanks again for posting your experience on RUclips. In fact if it wasn’t for your particular RUclips review I wouldn’t be giving this XTool any consideration. I also want to thank you for the other subjects like injection molding. Really helpful to the point information. Anyone interested in learning and actually making some simple injection molded parts should check it out.
    JoeW

      @BusterBeagle3D  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for the kind words. As for the first question about responsiveness I do hear that a lot and see it many times on the Facebook group. To be honest I feel part of the issue is the volume of requests that they get on any day multiplied by the fact that they are in a completely different time zone. Also I'm guess that since they probably get follow up requests from people who feel that they don't respond in a timely manner that just multiplies the issue. I don't want to make excuses for the company and again I am not part of it but I try to be sympathetic as I also deal with a flood of questions each day over a wide range of things. One way that I do find people get faster respones is to post to their official Facebook groups.
      The second question about MDF is that this machine should be able to do that all day no problem. Just use an air assist and do be careful if you don't have an enclosure as MDF can be toxic when burned with a laser. The kerf gets blown out by the air assist and I can't imagine having an issue. Now as far as this being a "Harbor Freight" like purchase you just have to keep in mind that unlike Harbor Freight these machines are not cheap. If you are only intending to cut 3mm wood every now and then just about every laser I have reviewed in the past can do that and sometimes at a much cheaper price point. Just something to consider. Thanks again for the watch and plug!

    how many passes would it take to cut through 1/4 inch plywood?

    • @BusterBeagle3D
      @BusterBeagle3D  Год назад +1

      It really depends on the type of wood, what glue they used to make, how humid it is and many other factors. Truly the only way to know for sure is to run some cut tests on it to see how it performs. I suggest faster/more passes over slower/less passes.

    • @BusterBeagle3D
      @BusterBeagle3D  2 года назад

      No. That is a laser module that was just announced a day or two ago. That type of laser is more for metals and is an infrared laser. This is a diode laser and engraves and cuts wood and other materials. It can work on some metals but not precious metals.

    What I would really like to know is: how many mm of wood do I cut in a single pass?
    What is the lifetime of the diode laser?
    Thanks

    • @BusterBeagle3D
      @BusterBeagle3D  2 года назад

      That really depends on many factors including what type of wood. what speed/power, air assist or no air assist. I could cut 6mm plywood in one pass where I might have been able to cut 10mm basswood in one. I much prefer more passes at higher speed. Causes much less charring and nicer cuts. As for the life of the laser I'm not sure. My guess if a really long time but if cutting is the primary thing you want to do with a laser I would suggest looking into CO2 lasers.

If you are looking for something that can cut sheet metal you might look into a more powerful fiber laser but those can get pretty pricey for the versions that can achieve that.

I use an SMC flow control valve with dial indicator which can be locked in at a preset level; saves a lot of hassle when you find the optimum flow rate. I understand there are new flow control valves with finer control from SMC soon, they are not widely available at the moment.

I'm also not sure if they have the specific 20W upgrade module for the pro version. The stand alone 20W on their website is intended as an upgrade to the original D1 and not the pro. • @BusterBeagle3D

      I don’t have a glowforge but they are different type of laser. They are a CO2 laser which is much more powerful then a diode laser like the D1. The only other thing I know is that a glowforge requires an active internet connection as that is the only way to operate the machine. So which one is better for you really depends on your needs. XTool does sell CO2 lasers as well comparable to the glowforge so you can always check those out.

    2) other tool air assist or honeycomb is optional in such application? like to try first and gradually like to add accessory.
    3) what is longevity of this machine? I read mixed review on amazon
    4)Looking at xtool d1 pro 10w or 20w . I see diff of 500 $ between them. Should I go with 20w ? Does 10W cut more intricate cuts then 20w?
    Quick reply (if u can) will be great as some deal may over soon by cyber monday.

      1) It can work on card stock, You just have to lower the power and speed up the cut
      2) It usually best to cut with both and air assist (reduces charring on the top surface) and a honeycomb(reduces charring on the back of the surface. Sure you can do it without as well but results may vary.
      3) As long as you take good care of it and keep it clean you should be able to get some good use out of it.
      4) The 10w has a smaller spot size then the 20W. If you are mainly cutting car stock and thin wood it's perfectly capable of doing that.

      Thank you for quick reply...
      Are you suggesting to go with xtool d1 20W or xtool d1 10W based on ur experience ?
      Thinking between
      xTool D1 Pro 10W with all accessories (rotary kit, honeycomb, air assist)in 980$
      Vs
      xTool D1 Pro 20W with rotary kit , PRYMOL Air Assist like (55 to 60$),Silicone Sheet (10$) around 1270-1300$

      @@uhstube74 It really depends on what you are going to do with it. If you want to cut thicker things go with the 20W , if detail is more important and you want to only cut thin things then go with the 10.

    Nice review. Will it engrave regular steel as well? aluminum?

      I wasn't able to get the same result on galvanized steel or aluminum. You would probably be able to mark on it if you treat the surface but I wasn't able to do it bare.

    They are not really limit switches, they are more like an out of bound function, are for the newbies who do not know what limit switches are ...The flame sensor is like on many diodes it's crap...The speed, hahaha, the speed 24k...Who the hell is going to engrave at 24k?You want to put stress on your diode laser , keep engraving over 10k,and you will find out what I mean...I still think that the D1 is one of the best diode lasers on the market today, yes I own one and also have the 20 watt module it works super fine...Anything that the D1 pro can do, I can do better...It's all about knowing your machine and the software you are working with...Like everything in life, there is a learning curve...So start learning!!!

      Yeah. I would never recommend burning at the 24K but technically it can work . I use it at a much slower pace. It's just nice to see a laser finally that can do some sort of mark at it's supposed highest speed. Most other lasers I have can't do anywhere near their advertised top speeds.
