#oaxaca de Juarez is a beautiful city in the state of Oaxaca. Located at about 5,000 ft above sea level, Oaxaca has a temperate climate year-round but with less sensitivity to elevation.
This city has about 252,000 people, with about 5% being from a foreign country.
Living in Oaxaca is a dream because you have a culturally rich city that is not too big, not expensive, and with some of the best food and festivals you will experience in Mexico.

Oaxaca is at the top of our list for a place to stay in Mexico. I love the indigenous cultural influence. I have been 6 times and spent 2 weeks there last year, doing 5 hours a day of Spanish in the immersion school. Recently I spent Christmas there. I love it so much: the art, color, architecture, food, museums, shopping, lovely people, climate.
I’m going to Oaxa next week what is the name of the school you attended? Merci.
We just returned from a week in Oaxaca City. We loved it. When my husband retires we will definitely come and stay for 3 months to get away from the winter in Ontario Canada.
Hope you learn Spanish and learn the heritage and respect it
@K3VIN21 always. No worries there. We have been traveling Mexico for years.
@@lindamaurice9923god bless !
From Australia The BEST video I have seen about Oaxaca. My husband is from Mexico city and we are going to Oaxaca with our grown children in april. Absolutely can't wait!

Watching from Charlotte, NC! I want to visit Oaxaca one day.
Very comprehensive video Marianna ! A lot of research and editing done. Thank you for sharing this 😊
Glad it was helpful! David our amazing storyteller helped a lot!
That was wonderful! Your passion for Oaxaca really comes through. Well done!
$450.00 dollar rentals, if they exist, that I believe is more now, it's about $8775.00 pesos in real time. Before the boom of foreigners moving to Mexico, the rents were more than half less of that. What that means? That the local people cannot afford those rents and are being forced to move out. The salaries in Mexico were increased double with the present administration, but even with the increase $450. dollars is too much for them. Secondly. Mexico still suffers for plenty of water. The government is working on building reservoirs to supply the demand for water. Local people have on top of their homes containers of water storage for drinking and daily shores needed that are delivered to their homes twice or 3 times per week. The prices for renting or buying homes have skyrocketed in Mexico since Covid when people moved there from U.S., Canada and Europe. A tourist doesn't suffer the small supply of water because he is in a hotel and as customer can waste as much water as he can. So my advice. Wait until plenty of water is available!
Wonderfully informative video about the beauty and culture of Oaxaca de Juarez. Can't wait to visit! Thanks Mariana
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hola from Canada, Vancouver BC. My wife took me there last year. Love it there in Oaxaca. So beautiful culture, people are amazingly wonderful and the shops are fantastic to visits. The food was also awesome in Oaxaca
Great video with lots of useful info!! Love it! This will definitely one of my 2025 trips.
If many American expats move there, it will become another San Miguel de Allende, loosing its spirit. When moving in Mexico, do you plan to learn Spanish and embrace the local culture? If your main motivation is affordability, it is pretty sad. Amitiés du Québec!
Many people's motivation is cost of living - no doubt. But trust me, Oaxaca won't lose its charm because a few foreigners move in. This place has been touristic for decades.... and foreigners have been moving here for years.
It does lose it.
Go home and gentrify your small beautiful towns, not ours.
@@KarenRodriguez-ir3udwhen Mexican comes over to the states MAJORITY of them refuse to learn English and expect the school system to supply ESL programs. Many states allocate millions of dollars to these programs. This means millions of dollars are taken away from English speaking programs. What is your opinion on this fact.
@@KarenRodriguez-ir3ud Hay 37 millones de mexicanos viviendo en Estados Unidos y 7 veces más mexicanos viviendo en Canadá que canadienses viviendo en México. Es hora de igualarlo, ¿no crees?
Agreed. The last thing I want to be is a Modern day gentrifier/colonizer. As an American with hopes of moving to MX, how can I be a more helpful and respectful member of society?
@16:15 Colorado. My flight leaves in less than two weeks to Oaxaca. I have booked a room for two days and contacted one contact about the possibility for a nice apartment. (according to what I know). It will cost about $750.
Thanks for your insight and inspiration😀
Good luck with your apartment search. Hope you find the ideal place for you
Beautiful. Florida here and cannot wait to depart and live in a healthy enviornment, full of culture, great food and happy people. Happiness here I come.

Muchas gracias Mariana, that’s a-lot of info. Thank you once again.
Glad it was helpful!
you asked where where are watching from..Im in Edmonton Alberta Canada..6 hours drive straight north of the US /Canada border..1 million plus people aqui..I plan on snowbirding minimum of 4-6 months a yr..tired of being cold in the dark..but I also cant handle extreme heat either ,so mountain towns are of high interest to me..quiet,inexpensive interesting places in the highlands..I just spent 2 months in Panama near Bocas del torro on the carribean and immensely enjoyed it..maybe some of the happiest time of my life..not enough culture for me though
..Btw , I watch your vids over and again,,truly enjoy your info and value what youre doing!!
Thanks for watching! I think you’ll love the highlands in Mexico- there is a lot of cultural things to do, rich history, and good weather

Thanks Mariana . Great video! Looks amazing ❤
Thanks so much! 😊 Oaxaca is truly unique! Where are you watching us from?
From Connecticut, was in SMDA last year and loved it and will return this winter to SMDA or Guanajuato or Oaxaca...
Nice! I also love SMA. Very different from Oaxaca. Hope you can make it to Oaxaca one day. 😊
I spent almost a month in Oaxaca in January (72F daily). I stayed in Centro the whole time and ventured out from there. I walked almost everywhere including la doctora (from eating too much delicious food), la lavandería, y los mercados. Seeing so many places that I visited when I was there really brings me back, for example, the Zocolo, Monte Alban, Hierve al Agua, and even the exact Ancestral Palenque (mezcal distillery), called "Mezcal el Sonador" that you show in this video. In their tasting area, they have a "muro de memorias" that all visitors sign (including me :) You absolutely did justice to this extraordinary city. I would like to return during Guelaguetza. Thank you so much for your dedication to showcasing this remarkable city and state.
Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed it
I'm Glad U made it back home
I’m going to the Guelaguetza
Thank you, This helped me. I reside in Tlaxcala and hope to visit Oaxaca in the very near future.
Watching from Sweden. All Mex experience is from PV. Been ther four times together with my wife. Love it but are searching for a calmer place. Even though we love it, our age of 55/56 are looking for more relaxing. PV is 👍🏼 but the older you get, the less active you get. That is mentaly. We still runs and walks marathons and goes to the gym 3-4 times/week. The brain does still demand more and more relaxing and we try to adapt 😉👍🏼☀️🥳
Hola from San Diego.
Your videos are great Mariana - solid production quality and supper informative and entertaining narratives. One area I'd love to see more coverage on is fitness / outdoor activities - mountain biking, hiking, rafting etc...Oaxaca seems to be in a geography that would have much to offer.
PS: We went to GUELAGUETZA in 2019 and fell in love with Oaxaca - this video was spot with the markets and food.
Glad you enjoyed our videos. 😀
Mariana, this is by far the best video MRG has ever made. It is practically a documentary on everything Oaxaca. Thank you for preparing and sharing such a comprehensive Oaxacan guide with us even though I’m sure this barely scratches the surface.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes… it’s hard to pack a lot into a video but we tried
Thank you so much for the information.... Hello from the United States/Washington DC

Watching from Cuenca, Ecuador. I loved Oaxaca back 24 years ago, and the coastal area, Puerto Escondido, was my fav. But I ended up here in Cuenca and love it. Very similar to Oaxaca, except for the food. O’ how I miss Oaxacan food. Great vid.
Watching from Atlanta. Nice, informative vid as usual. Saw someone else's vid on Oaxaca and they had a problem with air quality. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.
I’d say you should track air quality if you’re sensitive- personally I’m not sensitive
ALL elderly should look out for air pollution in MX. Both autos/trucks/etc & Wood Smoke (incl wildfires) And weather inversions in valleys and cooler/high alt locales.
PurpleAir monitors are what I track around the globe… (Sadly not many are set up in MX : ( )
Oaxaca is definitely on the list of must see here in the New Hampshire seacoast area.
Muchas gracias por compartir! Desde Canada 👋
Gracias a ti! Saludos

All of the good people have stayed in Mexico and respect their heritage. The bad people & cartels are coming to USA. That's why we want to relocate there. Thanks for the wonderful info!
Was there in October. Cute and fun town. Amazing street food. Slightly hotter than what I like, but still close.
I like that the city collectively goes to sleep around 10pm. If you want lots of nightlife, Oaxaca is likely not for you.
@@CurtisMoe I saw a video on San Miguel lastnight. Sd Temps go to 40's in Jan/Feb at night. Daily temp is around 70. I prefer Q.R state as it reaches 110°. Yucatan lots of rain but the buildings are beautiful. So much history to see.
I was there in June, and i want to visit it again

Chiapas is a good option - check out our video on san Cristobal de Las Casas.
@@MexicoRelocationGuide thank you, I’ll do that. I’ve also watched more of your videos. I think I’m going to do a volunteer trip to an area just to get a feel. When our children were growing we went on some volunteer trips and really enjoyed spending time with the people and their culture.
Best video, but it would be perfect if you would put the UDS$ amount next to the peso amt. Thanks
It changes too much everyday 😃 that’s why I’ll stick with only using pesos
Very good review of apt. rental prices in Oaxaca.

What's the water situation like down there now? Last I heard some people were only getting water every six weeks. It's also one of the places I've seen "gringo van a casa" spray painted on walls.
Listening from Australia , I would love to move to Mexico .
I am from Austria loving to come there
Me too 👋
I retired to Oaxaca. ONLY buy local- screw the the large corporations.
always buy local when possible :)
What about homes or condos to buy as opposed to rent? Tuning in from Michigan.
We focus a lot on rentals because 99% of people watching us have never lived in Mexico. So we encourage you to rent first. Having said that, if you're interested in buying we do have a variety of realtors we recommend. Oaxaca is still considered to be an inexpensive state when compared to other states in Mexico in terms of real estate.
If you'd like to learn more about how we can help you move to Mexico, I suggest signing up for our free email series first bit.ly/3O0GVNv
How would you rate the City & State, Emergency Management & Evacuation Infrastructure & Plan❓
I mean, since I don’t personally live in Oaxaca I can’t speak to how I would rate the city for responsiveness- but if this is important to you I would recommend a relocation tour with a local in Oaxaca who can share their experiences

Who would you contact to help with locating a rental property?
A realtor is the best resource for finding rentals. But not all realtors speak English, or work with rentals, or know how to help foreigners. That's why we have a directory of our vetted recommendations. Check out what you get when you buy the complete Mexico Relocation Guide- mexicorelocationguide.com/guide/

Welcome
Where in the US can you get a 2bd/2ba for 700/mo??
Another great video, thank you! What's the hair dryer on the grill for at 28:20?
In order to increase the flames. As a Oaxacan, I'd never eat my Tlayuda there but at street local where "petate" is used instead of hair dryer (lol).
Other tips to taste a good Tlayuda:
It must made with 'asiento' (pork fat), beans, 'quesillo' (cheese from Etla, Oaxaca), cabagge and closed/fold tortilla; No avocado, no tomato, no lettuce (instead of cabagge), no opened/flat/extended tortilla.
😉
Also, what does it take to become a student at the university?
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it

Update on water situation 2024
Oaxaca is currently undergoing water shortages. While now that we are in the rainy season, water seems to be plentiful, this past dry season, there were extreme water shortages. SAPACO the municiple water provider, was only sending water once every 40 days. This is in large part due to changing climate & an influx of large hotels & people. Water shortages are expected to reoccur this coming dry season so be advised
