What is Ancient Kauri wood?
Ancient Kauri is a unique material with an amazing beauty and intriguing history. It is commonly regarded as the oldest wood available in the world. Ancient Kauri has been buried underground in New Zealand for approximately 50,000 years, yet it is as workable as newly-harvested wood.
The Ancient Kauri has a powerful beauty. The grain and tones of the wood are lovely, and it has a powerful shimmering iridescence. The glow of Ancient Kauri adds to its beauty and illustrates that this is no ordinary timber, but something quite special. It makes anything built from Ancient Kauri more like a jewel. It is perfect for projects that require an extraordinary material.
It is rare to find an exotic material that is made available through environmentally friendly methods. Ancient Kauri is the most exotic wood in the world, it’s an extremely old growth timber, but not one tree was cut down to harvest it. All the trees fell thousands of years ago by natural forces, and one certainty is that there is a very limited amount of Ancient Kauri on the planet. Plan on being an owner and a steward of some of this incredible wood.
If fast is fun then this should be a fun boat to sail. She is light and narrow enough to show a really good turn of speed and has been very well cared for by her past and current owners. Under her full battened main and jib she is easy to handle short handed

Aft of the chain locker is the v-berth with a large filler piece that makes a very comfortable double. Overhead is a large deck hatch. Next aft is the head and hanging locker with beautiful carving on the door. The engine is under a sound deadening cover in the head. Next aft is the main cabin with settees port and starboard and inlaid drop-leaf table between. The settees are full length and are capable of sleeping two adults. Next aft is the galley at the foot of the companionway. The three-burner propane stove with oven and the stainless steel sink are to starboard and the icebox/chart table and navigation instruments are to port. Under the cockpit there are quarter berths both port and starboard. The large cockpit is comfortable and well protected with deep lockers on each side. The galley and head are equipped with manual cold water pumps. There is good 12VDC lighting throughout and there are gimballed kerosene lamps available should you choose to use them.

What a find, ,,Jim Young was way ahead ,for thar time, glad to see she's been well looked after , I picked up a similar vintage kauri full keeled , similar top sides ,in Wellington NZ .just before lock down ,in March, Had been laid up on the hard stand for 4 yrs ,restored all paint and putty ,4months and live on her in the Harbour,, enjoying the endless storms we've been experiencing, Also those double diagonal kauri hulls command top dollar here still,they r usually glassed over ,

I love the videos of all these older boats, especially with the combined emphasis on racing and some cruising! You give some real encouragement that an expensive new boat isn't required to get into racing competitively.

Beautiful curves everywhere -- my favorite was the curve of the back of the cockpit coaming reflected in the curve of the front edge of the aft cockpit seat. Top notch boat.

Hi Scott, great review as a kiwi sailing fanatic now living in British Columbia I remember these boats racing in Auckland horbour they were the end of an Era with fiberglass production boats taking over amazing the they are still going strong . I have a C&C 34 42 years old in original condition , keep your reviews commin

Soooo cool Scott, and hearing Morgan say a piece +++. Please pass a note to Morgan to talk to his rigger and get them to washer his toggles at the chain plates on deck. (Check out 5:15 -5:18) They are not happy now and will be crying later in a few years.
Man I can't for the life of me wonder why you thought the off set companion way was strange...one pilot berth port side don't need much width and it gives the galley more room...the contrast of having the U shaped dinette on the port(Short) side gives the illusion of a much wider cabin visually. Nice vid and review though...cheers.
I can not even imagine how much work that boat is every year to keep ship shape! With my Alberg 30 I work on it 2 days and sail 1 day. That has got to be about a week of work for a day of sailing. A true masochists boat!
Also: I doubt the cabintop athwartships profile is asymmetrical -- it just looks that way because the companionway is offset to port.

Memories! I sailed NZ37 'Tasman Sea' in Marina Del Rey in the 70's...she was a heavy air beast!

Lovely 'Kiwi-Hinkley'. Truly unique engine location, but not bad really. Like that he kept the blue - a real retrospective hue if ever there was one. I would only add a pellet stove and add a wine cellar, I am over here on the East Coast, where we always want to extend the season.

Barlow reel winch with brake? On my dad's Islander 37... last time I dealt with it was probably 1980. Scary beast, and the one thing on that boat I didn't get around to upgrading before going off to "bigger and better" (it was the hey day of IOR racing...so opportunities abounded). One thing that would be icing n the cake - some footage of these boats out sailing, if possible. Also, owner's commentary adds valuable perspective.

Sadly Jim Young passed away this year www.yachtingnz.org.nz/news/nz-loses-giant-boat-designing-and-building This boat is actually a very advanced design for its time fin keel center engines were popular in New Zealand shaft passed through the keel I would think keeps weight where you want it. Sorry but the clutch brake wire winches would have to go I've sailed on a boat with them and they sucked
My first thought was its a Des Townson from the lines but then also looks like a scaled up Nova (Alan Wright) like mine but its actually a blend of them all considering Jim Young was a friend of both those designers and would have sailed against them and their designs but Youngs best work was the young 88 a very popular boat in NZ. By the way my boat is built the same Kauri multiskin with Glass outside popular at the time stronger and more durable than your average glass boat also probably last longer if kept above water.
It would be called an "N Zed 37" down under.

i didn't and that is totally my fault. i meant to go into the jim young story but i simply forgot. i saw some neat feature on the boat and got distracted by the new shiny object!
