There's actually a cool secret behind the Lor Starcutter being sentient (14:00). Before being able to get to Halcandra, talk to Magalor. At some point, he will talk about the ship's origin. In the dialogue, you'll learn that the ship has a legend of "having a mind of it's own", and Magalor wants to take good care of the ship so he can see if the ship really is sentient or not.
