You are the best gaming RUclips channel there is. Love the positive demeanor and enthusiastic attitude. I’ve just found your videos over the last year and they’re so refreshing to me. Keep it up!
I was 9 when the N64 came out. I'll never forget how blown away I was playing Mario 64 for the first time Christmas morning. Coming off the SNES it was such a huge leap.
If you wanna experience that bump again, buy an oculus quest 2 and play echo arena. Absolutely mind blowing. Vr now ready to start it's promised journey with quest 2 and beyond:)
@@blahuhm6782 I was mostly console then. I played Age of Empires and Bridge too far on my dads PC as a kid. Dont remember much else. Didnt really get into PC gaming until Diablo 2 and Counter Strike came around.
I agree that period of time saw the largest leaps in graphics, ps2 starting to show signs of photorealism (on a standard def crt of course) and anymore we're just seeing small gradual improvements. Vr is the last big leap I guess... but only for visuals because we've barely scratched the surface when it comes to things like control and haptic feedback in games.
I'm so glad you're back up and swinging again Jonny/Johnny?! Dont know which one ha Your videos are fantastic. Ive been watching for easy 5 years+ The enthusiasm you have is the same as the day you got the games and really shows! You do a lot for people and to revive the nostalgia within us all. Great stuff as always 💪
Handheld gamer here, I gotta say the Gameboy Advance launch was solid as hell: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon & Mario Kart? I couldn’t believe how much they could pack into that little system. Lots of extra long bathroom breaks at work after that system came out!
I'll always remember Christmas of 2001 because that's when I got the Gamecube with Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Still hard to believe that all of those games came out around the same time.
Hard to imagine any modern console being able to beat the Gamecube having Rogue Leader, Monkey Ball, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Melee all within a month of launch.
My PS2 experience was the same as yours. A year in and my dad brought one home with Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy 10. One of my all time favorite launch titles came from the SNES, Actraiser.
Wonderful Vid Johnny! That Gamecube story hits home.. I preordered the PS5 and have almost all of it paid off.. but if it wasn't for my job and a bit of govt assistance I wouldn't be able to purchase it. Good life lesson and I may not be able to even get it. I'm prepared for that. Much Love and thank you for your positivity and great videos. Your an inspiration for me and many thousands of others.
I think the most profound launch title for me was Star Wars Shadows of the Empire on the N64. I got it with my N64 on Christmas of 97 and I was so shocked with awe.
I am so glad you mentioned Sonic Adventure. I have been a Sonic fan since I was 2, (I am now 28) and I still remember my first time playing Sonic Adventure. It felt incredible and it's still one of my personal favorite games of all time! It is just such a landmark title!

I was just going to comment this so in Japan the DC only had 4 launch games but in North America we had 18 titles at launch including Soul Caliber so I say it does count and every time I think about it I cant believe Soul Caliber was a launch title, insane!
I remember back when I first played super Mario bros and I finally made it to world 1-2. I celebrated all day for that. 😂 Also rumor has it that they are working on the Dreamcast mini 🤞
I still remember seeing Mario 64 for the first time and it changed everything.. It's insane.. Great video, John. (I'm just catching up on videos I missed this week. :P)
I had the exact same experiences with Super Mario Bros. I had no idea Nintendo existed until a friend asked me in to play one. We played Kung Fu first which was cool and all. Then he popped in SMB and I was absolutely blown away by the colors and graphics and the way Mario moved. It was so surreal of an experience that it's burnt into my memory. That was love at first sight!

I don’t really have time to play games now but I will always hit up your videos thank you. I know these aren’t launch titles, probably, but I will always look back fondly when I got my first console, a PS1 along with Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, Megaman X4 and X5 and Tomba 2. Jesús, even remembering makes me cry a bit, haha. That console was amazing, years will pass and I will always be thankful for experiencing amazing titles like Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, Wild Arms, Xenogears, etc...
I’m 39 and remember a ton of stuff from my childhood... even exact smell sights and sounds. I think memory is all about repetition. Repeat remembering something enough times and you’ll always remember it. If you don’t do that it will fade away.
31 and don't remember what I ate yesterday, but I remember some games, not all the first ones since I was playing from consoles from 6 years old. About repetition, doesn't have to be, remember some dreams, sounds, weather. Yes weather, there is a part of the day with just the right amount of wind, the ideal temperature and sounds that occur sometimes - I remember about 5 such days in my whole life xD
Hard night at work. Kitchens are tough when staff get sick. These are the times I really cherish you Johnny, rewatching this for some peaceful tranquility. Thank you as always but tonight it's a bit more somber.
I had already had some gaming years as a 3 year old with my gameboy/gamegear/genesis. However one of my first gaming memories was this: I was 5 years old back in 1997 when we got the Nintendo 64..I recall my brother going to school and telling my mother not to let me play it. However my mother, being as sweet and thoughtful as she is, brought out the massive power brick from hiding, plugged it in and I still remember that sunny day when I first played Super Mario 64. I can't remember what I did in the game, that is the only memory I have of that day. I will never ever forget that memory of experiencing the N64 for the first time.
I remember buying a Gamecube with Luigi's Mansion and Wave Racer....didn't think too much prior to buying them, but both of those games we a blast to play through. Wish we would get a new Wave Racer :(
We have some very similar choices! My favorite launch titles were: - Rogue Squadron II (Gamecube) - Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) - Power Stone (Dreamcast) - Halo (Xbox) - Killzone Shadow Fall (PS4) Great video Johnny!
your one of my favorite youtubers johnny, you bring such a wonderful enthusiasm and spirit to the camera, and your content is top tier, never never change happy console gamer, on a side note, i know your huge into RPG games, final fantasys, dragon quests, i recommend the legned of heroes Trails series, i think you'll really like those games
A Switch launch title that doesn't get much recognition that I loved at the time is Master Blaster Zero. Great little metroidvania style remake of the original NES title.
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time blew my mind when it came out!!. Even more than Mario 64. That game "open" and beautiful world was incredible back in the 90's. TLOZ OOT and TLOZ Breath of the wild have been the greatest video games experience I have ever had (I have played many video games in many different consoles).
I was a college kid back when dreamcast came out. I worked at Funcoland at the time. I bought the system on launch day and EVERY game that came out that day. I was in heaven. 4 controllers, 2 vmus and I think 2 light guns if I remember correctly. HEAVEN!!! Over $1000 that day if I remember correctly.
There were so many consoles that blew me away at launch. Genesis had amazing arcade ports never seen before at home and Super Nintendo took it to a whole new level of detail with Super Mario World but the Neo Geo, N64 and Dreamcast were the ones that had a huge impact on me graphically. Seeing Ninja Combat, Magician Lord and Baseball Stars for the first time at home was incredible. Mario 64 absolutely blew me away so much with its open world gameplay using an analog joystick for the first time ever. Virtua Fighter 3 was the closest thing to the arcade I had ever played on the Dreamcast at launch. Those were some really amazing gaming days of my life. I'll never forget them.
Lots of memories. My console launch was with the Dreamcast. But limited copies of games at the time. Sonic Adventure, it said it all what the console was about. How far we have come since the past. To more adventures
I'm in the same boat with Mario 64. The leap from 2D to 3D was such a shock for me. I'll always remember playing Mario 64 in Wal-Mart for the first time. My grandparents had to drag me away from the kiosk. I will say the first time I experienced VR, specifically the HTC Vive, it gave me a close feeling of shock.
GameCube I remember saving up to buy one as a kid and was able to pre order with my own money. Luigi’s Mansion,Star Wars Rogue Leader, Starfox Adventures, Pikmin, Smash bros melee and Eternal Darkness I remember getting on/near launch. Amazing system
I got my ps2 one year after launch. Unfortunately Metal Gear Solid 2 wasnt out in Europe yet but what I did get was Resident Evil Code Veronica X and it became one of my best RE games
Breath of the Wild has the same exact effect on me. My favorite launch game was Rouge Squadron for the GameCube...it just came at the perfect time in my life and I remember playing the demos at the electronics store and dreaming about it. I still remember the smell of the packaging and everything! Such good memories
I'll never forget seeing Mario 64 for the first time. We had a local game store that imported it from Japan when the N64 launched and I remember standing there mesmerized watching the owner play it for more than hour on this small like 17" CRT TV. The jump from 2D to 3D was so big that even my parents couldn't believe how good Mario 64 looked and they hated video games. I don't think we'll ever witness a jump like that again.
I faved this vid btw. Super nostalgic and informative for those that didnt live through most of those times like us. WE GETTING OLD, JOHNNY! lol PE@CE :P
I ABSOLUTELY agree! I loved Keith Courage, and none of my friends had it at the time. Only later did I hear how a lot of people didn't like it. Either way, I'll always have fond memories as well, playing it. Either way, I do feel as though it would have been a $50 title, whereas Altered Beast was over pretty quick.
GameCube rogue squadron 2: rogue leader. only game I had from Launch until Christmas. But played Luigi's Manson at cousins right before I got it for X-mas. still have both to this day. have all three Luigi's Mansons.
Tetris for me. Remember heading into town and using all my paper round money I had saved up for ages to buy the original Gameboy on launch day and a copy of Tetris. Was a wonderful thing and can still vividly recollect the day.
My number 1 game of all time Halo Combat Evolved and launch title. My brother got Halo and an Xbox at launch, and all it took was the opening music for me to fall in love. Never have I been this obsessed with a franchise still to this day! A week after I bought my own Xbox and so did my friends shortly after. and the Lan parties never stopped until I got Halo 2 and the internet haha.
Your parents were cool in that they supported what you liked. Mine also did, but they always judged me for wanting games and asking for another one. They kind of never understood that every game was different, they would just tell me to play the same one over and over lol
I grew up with nes, played sonic, shenmue, etc..., on Dreamcast, etc..., but man, it sure is something to actually hear someone grow up playing these games above the age of 4 like, my time when I had the system to myself for the first time was around ps1, ps2, but I grew up with others so I didn’t beat an actual game besides gameboy advance until ps3 around the time of the wii and that’s when I said “this era rules”. There have always been games, but when I beat metal gear solid 4 I was so appreciative of games and what they could offer ❤️
You mentioned Radio Shack. I just realized there's still an Radio Shack about ten minutes from my apartment in Arkansas. I had no idea and I've driven by it a thousand times. How they are still open I have no idea but it's there.
I'd much rather play through my MASSIVE back catalogue, wait a year or two for the price to come down, the launch games are on sale and there'll be more games to play by then too.
Pre ordering them online is brutal. Your best bet is to hit up a shop in person whenever the next round of pre orders is. That's how I got mine on wave 2 of pre orders, went to a eb games a couple hours before they opened lol
To me, the drastic change... it happened again to me. Playing Virtual Reality PC games. I got a VR headset, and I played Boneworks, and Blade and Sorcery. It was like playing video games again for the first time. Swinging your arms and having them follow you in game. Jumping, climbing, grabbing enemies. It's a whole new world.
Super Mario 64 was mine by a long way i had never been blown away so much in my life, I liked Sonic Adventures but it was one of the first console games i remember that had some pretty bad bugs on my first experience that did sour me a bit (like passing through scenary etc)
I got my PS2 the same time, Christmas of 2001. I picked up Final Fantasy X and Dark Cloud. Those two games cemented my love of the PS2. Such a great console, especially for JRPGs! I'm still playing on that same PS2. Currently playing through Shadow Hearts for the first time using a RetroTink 5x to upscale and de-interlace the image. :D
There are 2 that became my favorites of all time. Both for PSX. Destruction Derby and Jumping Flash. Put SOOOO many hours in DD and JF was my 3-D platformer that blew my cocoanut and is still very original.
Breath of the Wild and the Switch is certainly a launch I'll never forget. Showed up midnight on a work night, pulled an all nighter, showed up the next morning to my job as a bank teller (it was the 3rd of the month too so it was quite hectic), got through the day and came home and played until my body gave out. What a masterpiece.
I think the only time I got a console at launch day was the GameCube, and oh boy, what a lineup. My father bought me Luigi’s Mansion, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and Wave Race, it was an incredible Christmas. It later became my favorite console of all time, so many good memories
Ninja Gaiden (NES), Road Fighter (NES/Konami), Super Mario Bros. (NES) were introduced to me by my class mate back in middle school. I came to his home & oh boy, spent 5-6hrs staying in my frend’s house at that time.
My best launch experience was probably getting the original xbox and halo 1 for christmas the year it released...I had no idea what halo was..I think I remember looking at the pictures and thinking it was like an rts game lol..but wow my brothers and friends we all had a blast playing halo!
I went to the US for my PS2 the week MGS 2 came out (I'm from México). I also picked up RE Code Veronica X along with it and for my surprise it included a Devil May Cry demo disc, I fell in love with DMC and the next time I went to the US I bought DMC.

Just like The Nerd said its the best Castlevania game ever. Just wish it was a little more difficult but it's so good
Killer Instinct (2013) will always be a amazing launch title for Xbone.
Most memorable launch game ever for me was Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast.
Oh My God ! I like your Snatcher tee 😍 I got the PC-Engine Mini mainly for that game, well, Tengai Makyo 2 天外魔境2 too.
The feels of a sega genesis (mega drive for me) under a christmas tree hit me in the nostalgia nutsack. Nice touch
Tetris for me. Remember heading into town and using all my paper round money I had saved up for ages to buy the original Gameboy on launch day and a copy of Tetris. Was a wonderful thing and can still vividly recollect the day.
Yayyy! Enjoying this vid with a nice cup of 🍵
My number 1 game of all time Halo Combat Evolved and launch title.
If only i could get a console to even play the upcoming launch games lol
I'd much rather play through my MASSIVE back catalogue, wait a year or two for the price to come down, the launch games are on sale and there'll be more games to play by then too.
@@walterroux291 my ps4 and xbox are both on their last legs so i need an upgrade anyway
what launch games
Pre ordering them online is brutal.
Your best bet is to hit up a shop in person whenever the next round of pre orders is. That's how I got mine on wave 2 of pre orders, went to a eb games a couple hours before they opened lol
@@TaxEvader420 there are a few im pretty excited for. Admittedly im most excited for a remake tho lol
As far as I remember Johnny, the turbografx16 was only sold at Radio Shack, in Canada at least!
I remember getting a ps2 a week after launch and being like “ uhh well, I can play dvds” 😂
Well at the time it was the cheapest and best way to play DVDs
I'm stoked for this one I have a weird obsession with launch games
I remember picking up Sonic, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Soul Calibur at launch day. I don't even remember Blue Stinger.
Marvel vs Capcom didn’t come out till late Feb 2000 😂 not 99
Battle Arena Toshinden for PS1. A new foray into 3D gaming and 3D fighting. Had me hooked!
The SNES i remember getting in 1992 for my birthday. The first gaming system launch i remember was the N64.
The odd one for me was Elebits on the Wii. It's probably one of my favorite examples of what you can do with the system's control scheme.
@@AssociationAdmirer Look into it, yeah. Underrated in my opinion.
Great video man!!!!! Hope you got your next gen system on pre order I got the PS5
In south Florida we lost our last radio shack in my area like 2-3 years ago, last ebgames Around 08
"Goddamn Altered Beast." LOLOL...
Super nintendo Christmas morning with super mario world brings back those feels 😊
There are 2 that became my favorites of all time. Both for PSX. Destruction Derby and Jumping Flash. Put SOOOO many hours in DD and JF was my 3-D platformer that blew my cocoanut and is still very original.
Oblivion was the reason I bought my 360 too, but it wasn't a launch title
Oblivion and Gears of War for me
I was a Sony fan and I took the 360 bait. I don’t regret it. Great console.
He might class the first few months as the "launch window", just a guess though.
He literally said at the beginning of the video that some titles were not launch games and that he was cheating. Pay attention guy.
one of those vids i like before watching
Combat on the 2600 was a ton of fun. I didnt get it until it was already 5 years old though.
Super Street Fighter 2 for the CPS2 arcade system 😋
My best launch experience was probably getting the original xbox and halo 1 for christmas the year it released...I had no idea what halo was..I think I remember looking at the pictures and thinking it was like an rts game lol..but wow my brothers and friends we all had a blast playing halo!
I went to the US for my PS2 the week MGS 2 came out (I'm from México). I also picked up RE Code Veronica X along with it and for my surprise it included a Devil May Cry demo disc, I fell in love with DMC and the next time I went to the US I bought DMC.
Great trip down memory lane
