Looking at this 5 years after you posted this video and helped me out more than any other video I've found. I have a Synology DS1821+ and just got the Network Card. I installed it and realized it was even slower than the dedicated 1GB ports! It was only until I saw your video which taught me that I also need the SSD's as well as the RAM. Thanks. I will get this on my next purchases. Liked!
I just filled up my my cloud 4 terabyte and this video is right on time. I was definitely looking at either something from Synology or Qnap. it's a noisy, just not "I can't record or think with this on" noisy.
@@TomasVillegas no no I should have put a timestamp with that comment. When you allowed this to hear how loud it was I was saying it wasn't that loud where you couldn't record and put a little background music in the video.
Great video! I did similar to my DS1618+ (x2) and made a video about it, you went a step further with your SSD cache which I'm really considering doing myself. I have a pure SSD DS1618+ and a 'storage' DS1618+ with HDD so think I'll add a SSD cache to that. Thanks!
I’m going to give this project a go! Just bought the Synology DS 1819+ and everything you have in your “must get to work” section. Are there any other things to look out for.. where did you get the information for the read/write cache setup in DSM? Should be fun! Great video and continued success!
@@TomasVillegas AAHHHHH!! Of course LOL Thanks for the reply anyways tho brother! I ended up getting a QNAP card installed in my PC's. There seems to be no info on RUclips about using the actual 10gb NIC's for PC's
Thank you. Would you have any answer for the following issue. I need help : Recently just bought and installed the E10M20-T1 - 10 Gbe card on the 1621+ nas. I installed this card without the NVMe attached on it. However - since nowhere is mentioned if one should or not - I still attached the HEATSINK PART which came with it. The problem I’m facing is that when I check my Network settings from the Synology DSM 7 menu - I can’t see this connection as being available to chose as well. I can only see the 4 ports connection which are originally located on the 1621+ unit. I told myself that maybe the card is faulty or I did something wrong. Took it out and put it back in. Still nothing in the NETWORK menu. HOWEVER : it appear in the INFO TAB - on the DSM 7. When I look into the info tab of the unit system- it appears there on the PCIe - row as part of the system. Why I can’t see it in the system? Is it because I didn’t connect it to a 10Gbe port? Could this be the reason ? ( since I connected the card port with a CAT6 cable straight to one of the normal ports of router. The 10Gbe switch is not ordered yet. ) 🤔 Is this normal is the card faulty ? Thanks a lot!
waiting Synology made 8 bay with extra 2 NVME SSD slots. so we don't have to waste 8 bay for only use SSD which only 500MB read and write speed. I don't know why DS918+ and DS1019+ has such a good extra free NVME SSD slots. These high end 8 bay don't have.
Thank you for sharing your video. I am looking/considering the exact same setup , for at least 5-6 months now. Could you please answer a couple of questions ? 1) Will this 10Gbit connection be able to handle real time 4K/60p editing (maybe 3-4 cameras) in PREMIERE or Final Cut .... or any other non linear editor/software ..... reading the files straight from the "Synology 1817+" ? 2) Mellanox ConnectX-2 [MNPA19-XTR] 10Gbit ethernet PCIe ..... Are you familiar with this ethernet 10Gbit card ? Is it 100% compatible with "Synology 1817+" ? PS. Furthermore , could you please explain why did you prefer buying the "Synology 1817+" over the "Synology 1817" ? I mean , you did buy the E10G18-T1 ethernet card which has 1 RJ-45 port. Yet , the Synology 1817 (which is 100$ cheaper !) has two !!! RJ-45 10Gbit ports , already implemented into the original system. THANK you for your time. :) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
Hi! The 1817 is a great option as well. I just wanted a more powerful CPU and the ability to swap the 10GbE card if I wanted to. As far as handling 4K60 editing it does that just fine for when I use it. I primarily shoot 4K60 and slow it down in a 24p timeline and I haven't had any issues at all with it. With the Mellanox, I don't have any experience with it. Sorry. Merry Christmas and an Happy New Year to you as well!!!
You should be getting way more speeds than that. Mine writes at around 800 MiB/s and reads at 1064 MiB/s and I don't have SSDs installed (they actually have less to no effect on saturating the 10GBE link while writing streams). Are you using AFP or SMB?
Be careful about using SSD cache for large videos as you might actually wear through the write endurance limit of almost all consumer grade SSDs. Just keep/bear that in mind if you want to do something like this.
Do they have a USB Type C version? I'd assume if you're going to have it next to the main computer it's probably better because of faster read and write speeds.
Tomas, thanks for the great video! I have and iMac Pro and just installed the same card on a FS1018 and I am still seeing only 1000mbps. Any idea what else I need to do to see the 10000mbps on my LAN 5 in the Synology?
Would RAID 6 with 8 drives transfer files faster than RAID 6 with 5 drives? Why would I get the ds1819+ 8 Bay over the DS1019+ 5 Bay Drive? I'm a few days away from purchasing one or the other. Thanks
I tried out majority of the sfp and ethernet cards but my 1817+ can't seem to recognize the connection. Is it suppose to work right after I plug the card into the slot or do I have to install a driver or something? any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I really really like Synology. But that fact that a device like the DS1817+ which is a 1000$ device does not come with 10GbE by DEFAULT is just shameful and should be pointed out as a major omission even if you really like Synology. Thanks for vid! This makes the Synology a fast DAS rather than stay a NAS right? How could other clients connect to your Synology with this setup?

You'll want to disable SMB signing between the iMac Pro and Synology. Just Google how to do that and you'll be able to get better speeds.
Hi Bodie Quirk, same problem here.. You found a solution you can share, please?
