  • The developers of the BMW M3 and M4 have the floor. No frills; just information - first-hand from those who know best. In Episode 19, Karsten talks about the M Steptronic Transmission of the new M vehicles.
    BMW M3 Competition / BMW M4 Competition:
    Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.2. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 234.
    BMW M3 / BMW M4::
    Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.8. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 248.
    The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval.
    The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model. The values of the vehicles are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.] The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.
    For more information on the WLTP and NEDC test procedures, see www.bmw.com/en/innovation/wlt....
    Further information on official fuel consumption figures and specific CO2 emission values of new passenger cars is included in the following guideline: 'Leitfaden über den Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen' (Guide to the fuel economy, CO2 emissions and electric power consumption of new passenger cars), which can be obtained free of charge from all dealerships, from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen and at www.dat.de/co2.

    The only bad side with the M steptronic is that we don't have that explosive sound from the exhaust between gear changes

    150 ms gear change? E60 M5 could, allegedly shit in 65 ms. Some independent tests reported 150 ms actual shift time for the SMG III though. It’s still slower shifting than a Maserati MC-Shift automated manual found on the MC Stradale, which apparently shifts in 60 ms clutch-in and clutch-out included. Only downside of these super fast automated manuals is that they can’t transmit power during shifts, but guess what, the auto can’t transmit power when it ignition cuts anyways

    At the very end he said the DCT is faster when shifting to the optimal gear, where the ZF is faster when shifting to the non-optimal gear. When racing, you're always shifting to the optimal gear, so the benefit of the ZF is negated. Sounds like BMW used this as another cost saving measure (think CF driveshaft in the F series vs. steel in G series)..

      I love my M2C DCT but I agree 100% with you this looks like cost cutting on BMW’s part, the DCT is superior on shift speed and that’s what we need for an M car. 👍

    • @memememine1
      @memememine1 3 года назад +3

      Absolutely. Also add to the list of cost cutting the ulgy steel strut vs the old amazing f82 CF strut bar. And the f82 was the first m car with a 4 pot rear brake. The new g80 uses a sliding caliper that looks like it's off the e46/e92 m3. The dct gives the m cars such a fun character and really makes them feel different from the series car. You can see the lag in the paddles when reviewers are driving the g80. Reminds me of a faster version of the c7 trans. Big mistake not using the m-dct.

    lol , Dude... all you really had to say is that, blah blah blah, its a fucking slush box, no money, no DCT... BMW management told us that you get no budget this year and this is the only lame gear box that we currently have on our shelves in the warehouse ... its the same ZF slush box as on your moms Ram 1500 pickup truck but it works ok, and if you don't like it there is still an old 6 speed manual unit that we can slap in for ya.... and BMW, we THANK YOU very much for keeping the clutch pedal as we really didn't want to switch to a shitty overpriced 2 door Porsche!

    M ZF 8AT is super good. I love this transmission way more than the last generation DCT.
    I currently drive X4Mc. It's so comfortable and very smart and most importantly it shifts fast and accurate.

    • @Boosted30v
      @Boosted30v 3 года назад +3

      The X4Mc isn't a real ///M it's an SUV with an ///M motor that BMW made for people who had to compromise an actual sportscar for an SUV. So of course you'd like the automatic over the DCT, you didn't want a real sportscar in the first place.

    • @jamisonz3365
      @jamisonz3365 3 года назад +2

      @Boosted30v I don't care M3M5 or X6M. They're all performance cars. I drove F10 M5 before X4M and have once driven M2. I can tell you the 8AT is just superior to that last generation DCT transmission in almost every way.

    • @jamisonz3365
      @jamisonz3365 3 года назад

      @Boosted30v So according to you. The F90 M5 isn't a sportscar but the F10 M5 is? G80 isn't a sportscar but F80 is a sportscar. Is this your logic?

    • @Boosted30v
      @Boosted30v 3 года назад +1

      @@jamisonz3365 I never said the F10/F90 M5's were sportscars. They're not. I never said the F80/G80 M3 weren't sports cars. I said of course you'd like a smoother shifting autotragic if you loved the non-sport versions, because the auto is a non-sporty transmission.
      And thus real sportscars don't use the 8AT. They use DCT's, because they're faster, rougher, etc. And from what I know about BMW's history they used to make homologated models into M3's which were sportscars. The G80 will likely end up being the 996 Porsche of the M cars. There's literally nothing special about it.
      And no, I'm not hating. I have an Evo, F80, and a Hurucan which are all real sportscars.

    • @jamisonz3365
      @jamisonz3365 3 года назад

      Who cares what you think about sportscars. This new gen 8AT M cars are way faster than all last generation M cars. From normal to Fastest in segments. I don't think you know much about the performance car market. If you'very paid attention you will at least notice how fast this generation M cars are compared to last gen. This generation will sell way more than last gen. The great sales figures of F90 M5, F95/96 X5/6M already proves that more people choose them than last gen. Currently G80/82 orders are also crazy.

    That was not a satisfying answer at all regarding why the torque converter transmission was chosen over the DCT. He basically said “eh, we thought it was good enough”. Come one BMW, give us more than that.

      It has already outsold the F80 and will continue to do so. It’s faster, more comfortable in comfort mode, has better and WAY more comfortable shifting and more aggressive looking. I highly recommend you seek counseling for the one and only thing that’s bothering you and that is they had the audacity to change the front because they don’t want to have the same looking car for 15 freaking years in a row. Good grief.

      As an owner of a 2014 M6 with 7spd DCT, a 2013 650xi GC with the ZF-8, and an E46 M3 with a 6speed..
      I think BMW getting away from that stingy 7spd DCT is the best thing they can do. It's not exactly "sporty" like a PDK, it's ridiculously expensive, and it shaves only 0.05 seconds off the launch. I see little to no benefit. ZF-8's are in abundance, easy to service, and make amazing upshift thunder sounds out of the N63Tu's / S63's unlike the DCT's. For a street car, which literally ALL BMW's are (outside of the M2 Cs), you really only need a ZF-8. You can still do headers & tune up to 700~hp range and still be worry free with a ZF-8; and if it breaks? $8k at a Euro shop for a low mileage functional one installed...
      I still find myself driving the 650xi GC the most of the 3, with the M6 just collecting dust as a sitting asset... When I want a sports car, I take the E46 off of the trickle charger and straight over to Toronto Motor Speedway...
      BMW's of ANY caliber in the last 15 years have not been sports cars. Since the E90 generation these things have just been luxury sedans (and extremely heavy coupes). Purely meant for legal road driving.
      They're "attention to detail & tuning" to their forcibly awful electronic steering racks should be indicative enough of their current directive. That said, and to reiterate - I, like many others, prefer the switch away from the $16,000+ Getrag (7DCI600) DCT's..
      Prices / numbers listed are in Canadian Dollars.

      @@BrettL250 Thanks for reading!
      While I may have come off negative on modern BMW towards the end there, don't get me wrong. They still make wicked cars, they've just given up on the track car segment to a handful of other auto manufacturers. For speedy fun on the legal roads? AMG or BMW no doubts no remorse, you're making a solid choice.
      The G80 M3's and M4's are superb pieces of technology. There is a lot of compromise as is the story for just about all modern vehicles. I strongly believe the S58 engine will prove to be among the best petrol engines Earth will ever have the blessing of hosting before EV's take over. I think I'll be in this exact market for a 6spd G80 a few years down the road. Redbull and their 1000+HP S58 with simple top end mechanical tweaks speaks volume for the potential and overengineering in this new platform. (Mind you, the new ECU's are not tunable yet and might not ever be tunable)
      Keep well, keep safe out there and enjoy the drive :)
