There’s a few 5000-6000mah 3s lipo soft packs that fit in the stock location (26-28mm tall packs. I cut the front body mounts off flush at the bottom, than cut the tops down to 1 inch from base to mounting surface. I should put a a build on a forum somewhere, I have a pretty cool idea on how to build a proper lcg style stampede 2wd for very little money
Another great video. Most of these issues is shared with my Rustler 2WD as well. I agree with all you said. I decided to start swapping out the screws, but I haven't come around to swap them all out yet. It's quite the task.
The VXL Stampede comes with better screws, actually all VXL Traxxas models do. I don't know about the new model but the VXL only fits 2 cell lipo. I bought my VXL Stampede used. The chassis was snapped by the servo, but the servo saver was still good. My 7 year old slash still has the original servo saver, it's my most abused Traxxas model everyone runs it. Most of the time I run 3s lipos. Had to replace the tires many times, burn the tires off it.
My son just broke his body on the bigfoot edition (edit his truck fits a Traxxas 5000mh 3cell I also think the bigfoot one looks more realistic and seems lower)
That’s all very true….but it takes time and more money to swap it over….I just wish they would have charged a bit more money in the first place and had hex screws installed from factory…I do understand why they did it though
I did the slash conversion which is just the chassis and new body. Kept the ground clearance and had lower body. A little bit harder to wheelie until i put my old 1/8 scale redcat terremoto motor in. It pulls wheelies at any speed on command
Yes I got a rustler 2wd xl5 which I brushless converted. I went through 3 stock servo savers and then upgraded to a metal servo horn which is 10 times better. I also got a hex screw kit and converted the whole car over to hex hardware. I stripped out alot of Phillips head screws. I also upgraded to bearings too. Traxxas makes the bandit rustler and stampede platforms very cheap. The vxl versions and the 4wd vxl versions are alot better imo since they have bearings and hex hardware. Another thing that the vxl has and the xl5 doesn't is steel adjustable camber links while the xl5 has the plastic non adjustable links.
I agree with you 100%….I thought about putting the plastic links in my list…they are weak but for the cost of the machine it makes sense they used them….overall the vxl models are much better compared to the Xl-5 models…the brushed Slash is much better equipped compared to the Stampede XL-5 though…it is about $30 more…but well worth the extra cost to get the steel adjustable links, hex screws and bearings all around
I have a Stampede with a Rustler 2wd chassis. It basically is a Rustler now. Doesnt handle as well as one with the monster truck wheels and taller body. But its much more enjoyable to drive. The steering is also better since its now a bell crank setup.
The main reason these cheaper models come with Philips screws is because this is marketed towards a beginner which most likely doesn’t own a dedicated RC toolset. But who doesn’t own a screwdriver? Also it has bushing’s because they require less maintenance and are more forgiving with sand and mud. Its actually quite genius for the market they’re trying to hit when you think about it. Now…. the vxl comes with hex hardware and bearings because it’s marketed for someone with more experience. Its literally on the box.
@@victorbarajas4705 those are all valid points…it’s definitely more tailored towards beginners….also it’s true that nearly everyone has a Phillips Screwdriver
A super cheap way to change out all the screws would be to order from belmetric. You can order any amount and they have tones of sizes. Traxxas does use some odd size screws (length), but I'm sure a couple mm less or more wont hurt.
I run the traxxas anacondas on my slash and rustler. I ordered some duratrax six packs for the slash and for my rustler I am planning to get proline speed treads or trenchers. I do have to agree that the stampede and bandit xl5 completely stock looks like a toy grade but once upgraded it looks more hobby grade. I only run on 2s in my cars but looking on 3s lipos so I'll look into that expansion kit. The ruslter has the exact same battery strap or tray problem as the stampede.
Kinda feel like this is a intro rc to get people into it. Very simple design with Phillips screws. I hate Phillips screws to, but understand why they use them. I do however wish they would use all machine screws so that you could upgrade to hex if you want. The stampede vxl has hex screws and adjustable links. It’s closer to what you want in an rc car, but too powerful for beginners.
Yeah it’s definitely tailored more toward beginners and you can definitely see where they decided to save money….it’s still a good truck overall though
while you can still take out stripped philips head screws, you can not take out a stripped hex. hex screws are harder to strip, but if they do theres almost no way to take them out
Another issue (mostly one of the issues for me) The body, i wish it had a lock instead of clips, not too big of an issue but it gets annoying to lose clips and having to buy new ones
@@RCKnockout found a way around the clips, proline body mounts secure lock, youve put them on your slash before, itll work with the stampede, you should do it next in your stampede series
The Stampede is too much of a wheelie machine for me. Also the chassis, being as narrow as it is, and the limitations of the battery, is another reason why I haven't purchased a new one. The Philip screws is annoying as you would thing they would standardize all the models to make it easier on the production lines.
Yeah I can understand that…it’ll never be the best handling rig, no matter what you do to it but it’s still fun to rip around….yeah the hex screws would be nice to see in the future

Don't know why you are complaining about not having wheelie bar stock, stampede is monster truck style and most wheelie bars will break if bashing anyway, just learn how to use throttle. I've got 10yrs+ old vxl rustler and still have original steering servo and arms as haven't fail. Better quality 3s battery's are thinner but still can fit in stock battery box. We bashing ours so hard at mx tracks and skatepark ramps launching so high. If you wanted better you should have bought vxl model of rustler or lower stance rc as it is they're all toy, vxl 2wd rustler has allen key bolts. That's what you get if you by cheaper.
I guess you don't know what your doing I run a 5200 3 cell no expansion kit and put electric up front and troped the body mounts all the way down and run brushless in it
Some 3s packs will fit but a lot won’t without running the expansion kit…you can run the body low if you place the electronics up front like you did but most people would prefer keeping it in the stock location
“My opinion” wheelie bars look stupid and you don’t need them, you can wheelie great with the stock setup if you understand throttle control and the electric power band on your model, instead of just dragging some tiny wheels at a set position, I suggest everyone learn throttle control, and how to keep the car in a wheelie without a Vice to help, gets in the way when bashing as well 🤷🏽♂️ just my opinion
