      The strangest part about that was his parents willingness to identify themselves as having spawned that joke. You'd have thought that would have been something they would have wanted to keep to themselves... James Corden is without doubt one of those people you're left scratching your head about over success with zero talent, charm or personality. Irritating is spot on.

    Will Arnett... You're Bojack Horseman. You're in one of the most critically acclaimed television shows of the last five years, dealing with heavy themes in a tasteful way whilst opening up sarcastic discussion about topical issues as well as having a sense of genuine heart and soul attached to a fantastic cast of characters.

    I totally disagree with you about Super Troopers 2. It's a dumb, fun, comedy in the same vein of comedy as Zoolander 1 & 2. (They know they're dumb and stupid) That wants nothing more from it's audience than to make them laugh a bit. I've always respected your opinions Mark, and the film lessons you've been teaching us since your intros to films in the 90's (the exorcist, Mad Max etc. I think you should do more of those!) Which I think has given me a greater appreciation of films in general. But I think there's a lot worse films out there than Super Troopers 2. Such as "Life Of The Party" Absolutely terrible. "Slender Man". And the shittest film I've seen of the year "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom". A film that has absolutely no respect for any audience member, that only cares about Political Correctness, box ticking "Equality". Insulting, and Gross. But I don't want to be all doom and gloom. A couple of the best films I've seen this year so far are "You were never really here", and "Revenge".

    Super Troopers 2 was exactly what Mark said; a film that no one wanted, except for the fans of the original. Fair enough, the Good Doctor was not a fan, but I and a lot of my friends were fans of the original Super Troopers. Similar to Anchorman, we watched it just at the right time in our adolescence. And sure we expected to be let down like we were with Anchorman 2, but instead we were so relieved that we laughed all the way through and it's one of my favourites this year.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 6 лет назад +1

      Same with Hot Wet American Summer, it was kind of the Anchorman for weird cult-y alternative people.

    "Life of the Party" is a compilation of vaguely related scenes that could be assembled in any order and function exactly the same. There is one moment that is quite good, albeit similar to something from 22 Jump Street, however so much of the film is tedious and lacking in anything genuine or funny. Seeing LotP having watched "Game Night" from earlier in 2018 made me realise how much better a functioning screenplay aids a comedy overall.

    This might shock some people but for me the worst film so far was Ladybird and I normally love Saoirse Ronan's work. It was badly written, "character driven" (a fancy term increasingly used for saying no plot). The main character was just random and had no consistency. If I want to see a mother and daughter bicker I'd watch my wife and kid on a Friday night. My wife hated it more than me and described it as one of the dreariest films she'd ever seen.

    I'm still not entirely convinced it deserves a Worst film award but Ready Player One is still definitely the biggest letdown and the film that's annoyed me the most this year. I certainly liked elements of it but as a whole it was utterly infuriating, hollow, empty and just way too CGI heavy. It was like I was watching a nostalgic look at my childhood clouded by modern eyes and at first I wondered whether it was because I'd simply grown older but then I rewatched the 'old classics' and realised that they still had the magic that was sadly missing from this overrated film that, despite a few smiles, just left me feeling empty, hollow and as if I'd somehow missed something that had made other critics use the word 'Spielbergian Magic'

    • @grahamkristensen9301

      You want to know the worst part? The book it's based on is even worse with the nostalgia masturbation and has a ton of really creepy undertones. Having Spielberg direct was the only way a film version of it could be watchable.

      Jo R Precisely. It was just a dumb theme park Easter egg hunt that could and should have been so so much more. Just look at Edgar Wright's filmography and you'll see how films can be packed full of fun secrets, Easter eggs and hidden motifs yet also work as entertaining films in their own right. Wright was initially tagged as a potential director for RP1 and I'm sure he'd have done a much better job though maybe it was just the poor source material. Many questions but one fact remains ... it was a bit of a giant turd!

      I didn't know that about Edgar Wright. Speilberg's name on a film means a lot of bums on seats, which I'm sure went a long way when choosing the direction. To be honest, this sort of film doesn't require much brain power; it was worth it just to see Mark Ryland looking like an ageing hippie.

    Only Death Wish have I seen of all these. I try to avoid movies I expect to be & the critics confirm as bad if I can help it, I'd rather find something more interesting or worthwhile to watch that won't bore the pants off me like happened a couple of nights ago funnily enough when I watched the rubbish Skyscraper. Last night's choice American Animals was much more enjoyable though.

      Jurassic World 2 tricked me. I went for Ian Malcolm and got about 3 sodding minutes.
      And it changed tone so drastically when it switches the !mansion. I genuinely feel the mansion stuff should have been another film rather than slotted in here where it felt like one of those satellite channel "movies" that are actually just 3 or 4 episodes of a tv show shoved together and given a title

      Bannerman 1903 can't speak for OP but for me, it's my Odean card. It doesn't cost me anything extra to check out any of them and you never know when you're going to be surprised.
      I loved Hereditary though. It got really under my skin. Reminded me of House of The Devil, another slow moving film that people either love or hate.

    I alway thought that Death Wish should star an "everyman", not an action star. Imagine someone like Toby Jones, or Martin Freeman, in the role. Someone who you wouldn't expect to patrol the streets. A man spiralling into destruction. You could make a really good study of of uncontrolled grief.

    Took my daughter and her friend to see Show Dogs, my daughter REALLY didn't want to watch it. Should've listened to her and paid for them to rematch Sherlock Gnomes again. The version I saw had that infamous scene in it, luckily both girls were too bored to pay any kind of attention to it. It is one of the worst films I have ever seen and last year I took both of them to see The Jungle Bunch, which was so bad we were the only people in the cinema. Just don't watch it EVER!

    It pains me to say it as I had great hopes for 'How to talk to girls at parties' (especially as it is set in my local area and had a great pedigree as you note) - but absolutely spot on. Great performances and period detail but I have to say I did not personally enjoy. Just as an aside I highly recommend a wonderful documentary 'Basically Johnny Mophed' which is about a legendary Croydon punk band

    As a massive fan of period dramas (i.e. Merchant Ivory style fare), I was very excited to watch "A Quiet Passion" with Cynthia Nixon. It was literally the worst movie/boring as hell that when I was watching the "lounge parlour scene" I felt the need to run and sit in a dentist's chair rather than waste away my life in the most mind-numbingly painful, rather watch paint drying film with a character so charmless, nasty and irritating that I literally had no sympathy and was wishing her character would die painfully in the end. Fortunately, I got my wish.

      No it wasn't, it was just cut here to get a 15 rating, uncut it would've received an 18 and the film company doesn't want that out of fear of making less money. The same also happened to Red Sparrow and John Wick 2

    Super Troopers is a cult stoner comedy in the US. Lots of appeal to many people here. Had no desire to see a sequel, well because comedy sequels are god awful but plenty of people remember it. But again, still a reasonably small amount. Stoners who are now in their mid twenties to early 30's mostly.

    To be fair, many of the films on this list are not woeful. The fact that many did not receive a wide mainstream release (Tad And The Lost Explorer, for example...) or are just lacklustre (Pacific Rim: Uprising) rather than being actually outright terrible speaks volumes about the quality of movies released so far in 2018. I thought that Life Of The Party was bad but it hasn't lingered in the mind or the stomach like truly regrettable viewing experiences do. No title on this list is as bad as, say, Gods Of Egypt or London Has Fallen. It has been a pretty underwhelming blah year for film so far, all things considered, with few films either excellent or outrageously poor.

    Good list! I definitely haven't seen as many crap films as you (haven't seen any on this list). My bottom five would be...
    5. Tomb Raider
    4. The Avengers: Infinity War
    3. Skyscraper
    2. Gotti
    1. Ready Player One
    For me, Ready Player One is such an awful film. You could probably argue that in many ways it's "better made" than a lot of other terrible films, but to me, it's just ugly, boring, annoying, and in some ways a troubling film.

      How on earth do you not like Infinity War?

    • @RMarsupial
      @RMarsupial 6 лет назад

      I thought it was so boring and repetitive. Just feels like a load of pointless fights that don't really go anywhere. From a more big-picture point of view, I hate how the film fits in to the larger Marvel universe, where it is basically a sort of "harvesting" of all the characters and plots developed over the rest of the series (the LA Review of Books did a great write-up on this, called "Post-Shawarma", I believe).
