The Z4 has an issue with rainwater collecting in a well around the soft top hydraulic motor. This immersion usually results in pump failure. Replacement of the pump of by a BMW dealer is around $3K parts and labor. There are a several videos on RUclips addressing replacing these hydraulic pumps with Ford Mustang convertible top pumps for about $185 for the pump. If you do it yourself, the pump is mounted on the wall inside the trunk which also keeps it out of the rainwater well. The Mustang pump is almost identical to the OEM BMW pump but is less than half the price. Also, the pump can be replaced without completely removing the softtop from the car and results in faster top operation..

And the leftovers will go on petrol. RX8 fuel economy is a borderline joke, I've wanted one for a long time as they're a compact and practical RWD sports car of which you simply don't see anymore but I actually drive my cars so wouldn't be able to afford V12 Jaguar levels of fuel efficency.

@@Negativvv I had the earlier version RX7, i rebuilt engine twice myself, cost £5000 in parts and it would do 18mpg. Nice drive but worst car i have ever owned. I later put a Ford engine in it. Finally the floor rotted away and it went £15 at the scrapper.

VANOS problems don't necessarily set you back a grand. Find a nice and good BMW specialist, and they do VANOS rebuilds with premium better-than-factory materials for around 400 bucks. I did it on my E46 325Ci (which has the same engine, M54, just a tad smaller) and I'm pretty happy with the results :)

I had that car for a weekend and its just awesome. The suspension is firm but very comfy. There is only few issues with it.
      1. no cup holders, which sux especially in a soft top, when you get thirsty good luck
      2. the standard seats are junk, you will get back pain from them very soon, they completly devalue the great suspension, 'sport' seat option is must have, they are much, much comfier
      3. one wheel fire, no LSD as standard unless you have M model.

The retro inspired interior has aged far better and you are complaining that it has E36 parts? It has a great 5 speed manual with great feedback and the car pulls like a freight train. The Z4 is too much of a muscle car and the interior is ugly as hell, the worst era for BMW interiors. Be careful about the boxster if it still has the original countershaft bearings in the engine. They were sealed ball bearings that suffered from lack of lubrication if the grease in the bearings give up and result in possible collision of pistons with valves. A boxster rebuilt with ceramic ball bearings on this shaft will have better longevity. The ceramic ball bearings are not sealed and use more reliable oil splash from the crankcase.

Z4 3.0si has a nice engine. Is sounds fantastic, loud and low pitch growl at 2000rpm then it starts to scream above 5000rpm. And it can rev as high as 7000rpm. Aslo the coupe version looks very special. If you fit it with rear wing it starts to look like a supercar. With upgrades you can turn it into a supercar but that will cost a lot. And If the price gets high you can look for other options like a track day radical sr3 or an ariel atom. In conclusion if you want real performance, it is hard to find something cheap. These three cars are in entry level sports car under 6 seconds segment. Any of them is quite fun to drive, but sadly the Rx8 is notoriously unreliable, I would stay away from it unless you know what you're doing.

Agree. Currently driving a 2.5si. It is a severely under rated and overlooked sports car car. Revs to 7000 rpm and inside the tunnel, it transforms from a refined machine to a growling beast. Everyone worships the S2000 thanks to its 8200 rpm. But only those who have driven a E85 Z4 knows how special it is.

That means that the insurance company has declared it a total loss (due to flooding / water damage / wreck) and then someone has bought it and fixed it up. They left off a car that was much nearer a super car than anything on this list, a Mercedes Benz CL 55 AMG. With nearly 500 Hp & 516 lbs-ft of torque from the supercharged, hand built engine, the cars are rockets. Then add features only found on super cars back then like: radar cruise control, 6 piston calipers & cross drilled rotors, front & rear. Heated & cooled front seats, oh & they also had a massage function. The alcatara headliner & the actual burl wood interior trim. That kind of luxury was only found on Rolls Royce & Bentley.
Plus, these days you can buy one for a dash over $15k in the USA, with great maintence history too.
Just be sure the ABC suspension is well cared for or expect outrageous expenses repairing it!
    Honestly, they are great cars.
    Good luck folks!

The RX-8 is not a daily driver car. It's a car you drive the crap out of on the weekend. Once you park it and shut the engine off, the game is over if you have to re-park it. The Z4, very fun car to drive every day. I had used a 2.5i for a little while. It wasn't fast, but it was extremely fun. I can't speak on behalf of the Porsche.

Dont buy a car with a rotary engine, they are terrible!!! I remember the RX8 reviews at launch, saying how good the car was......other than the torque lacking crappy rotary engine. Nearly every review said how much better the car would be with a normal 4 or 6 pot instead. At least the best RX7 ran a turbo to inject a decent amount of torque. The RX8 has been an increasingly rare sight on UK roads, and I live close to a Mazda dealer, and this is surely down to that short living rotary.
