    Thank you so much for this "Cooling A Heat..." video. I do 3am watering and DAY watering now, only 5mins at 1pm and my lawn turns out healthy now in hot summer in NorthEast. This is the BEST way to help the lawn survive well in the summer time. No other way ! Thanks a lot !

    Cooling A Heat is the best video so far. I am living in CT and I set up my sprinkler system watering my lawn 15 mins each zone at 3am in the morning and again at 1pm for only 5 mins, everyday. If the temperature reaches more than 87 F, I water again at 4pm. My lawn is healthy without stress at all. Thanks The Lawn Care Nut Problems resolved, after many, many, many years lawn always gets burned in the summer time. Not this time and never again. Again thanks so much.

    Im fairly new to the lawn nut community and I was afraid of burning my lawn if I watered during the afternoon. I seeded my lawn in mid spring this year to fill in some construction damage (i know its not the ideal time but it went off without a hitch) and i put my lawn (400 sf) on a 5 minutes in the morning 5 minutes mid-afternoon daily watering cycle and my lawn loved it. So I have maintained that watering cycle for the last month or two, resulting in lawn domination. Thank you for all your tips and the time you spend to break down your passion for lawn care. Thanks for dispelling the mid day water burn myth!!! Fescue in NC here. My usual summer is fescue gives up and crabgrass takes over. By covering all the bases this year with all your strategies, I am DOMINATING my neighbors! Going to try quick bursts of water with my sprinkler throughout the day next to cool my 115 degree soil. Great idea, but I don't have time or ability to run home every day. Having my Rachio controller take the helm and give it a shot. Thanks!

    "Mass lawn burning" I was worried if there was such a thing because I planted grass seeds here in A suburb of Portland Oregon and have to keep the seed and the new planted sod watered. It was 90 degrees here and I was watering my small front yard like it was a wet n wild water park. I was thinking my neighbors might think I'm burning my lawn with the bright bright sun at 2pm...I as well has that in the back of my mind if there was such a thing...I'm glad Alan that you speak with a touch of sarcasm, and I'm saying it with appreciation because it helps people understand when sarcasm is used properly.....I've taught my son math with a little sarcasm when pointing out different techniques...and he is now a Straight A student...thanks for your clear, easy to understand tutorials.

    Having an above ground trampoline is a life saver for those heat stressed areas a few days in the shade and it takes right off. Especially if you put the sprinkler under it and let the kids go crazy in the afternoon.

    I live in Sarasota, just south of you. We are expecting some unusually high temperatures this weekend. I searched out a video like this because my intuition told me my lawn won’t “burn” if I water it mid day. The burn theory I hear is: once you stop the watering, droplets act as tiny magnifying glasses and burn the grass”. Truly I don’t care much for my lawn because it always looks great (I’m lucky) but the higher temps and lack of daily showers lately are taking a toll.

    Hey there Allen, just wanted to say that was a great informational video, keep em coming. Also I just wanted to add that while watering the lawn during mid day will NOT burn out the lawn, the reason you want to water early is so the water has a chance to penetrate the soil where the plants can use it. watering mid day especially during the heat of the day, allowing the water to evaporate, and while this may help cool the lawn, the lawn can't utilize the water to sustain growth. Misting the lawn is a great idea to help cool it down so the stress of the heat isn't so great, but regular watering in the morning is essential to help keep the lawn strong and healthy, resisting disease.

    • @witness033
      @witness033 8 лет назад

      That's a good point to emphasize, because a lot of beginners will confuse regular watering with the supplemental misting or syringing. It doesn't do much good to mist if you don't meet the basic moisture requirement in the soil profile.

    • @TheLawnCareNut
      @TheLawnCareNut  8 лет назад

      yep, agreed. It's in the video but wasn't stressed like it should have been.

    Thanks man needed that video. For some reason my impluse sprinkler doesn't water a area evenly, the middle is brown and edges green. I have been using a oscillating sprinkler due to lawn size and even coverage. It's so hot and dry here in SC I'm just trying to keep the fescue crowns alive. Like always thanks for dropping your knowledge.

  • @dddmmm21
    @dddmmm21 8 лет назад

    Something "weird" I noticed (my first year in lawn care): The lawn areas which were better watered during spring are doing much better during the heat, even though now I water everything evenly. Those better watered portions remain green and keep growing in reaction to the water I put now. The other areas got brown and although I can green them up with extra water now, they are clearly lagging behind. I was using a hose during spring and now I have sprinklers. It is like that portion of the grass got a much better foundation to support the summer stress.

    When water evaporates it takes heat energy with it. It's also dependent on the humidity of the air. Humid air lowers how effective the heat transfer is. In places like Arizona you would get even better results! Thumbs UP!

      Pushing 93-94 full sun day 7 with 3-4 to go. Been dumping water but my irrigation system has just horrible coverage in the spots that need it most. Combating 2nd round crabgrass around the edges/not too bad, where the prodoamine wore off (lesson learned) and also Nutsedge. I’ve pulled half of the nutsedge when it was wet but can’t pull when it’s this dry. Won’t get root and so waste of time. Need to bust out the hose and sprinkler to target certain areas I’m seeing.

    The reason this works is due to evaporative cooling. Water evaporating requires a lot more heat (latent heat) than if it was to just stay as a liquid and increase in temperature by taking sensible heat from the ground. Also why it is best to remove wet clothes when cold, because sensible heat from your body will be used to evaporate the water from the wet clothes.

    Evaporative cooling works best in lower humidity. If the humidity is already 100%, its not going to help much since the air is already saturated. Then its just the temp of the water bringing down the temp.

      Ah ok. I'm in Phoenix and rolled out Tifway 419 Bermuda last November. It's been around 115 daily here with lots of direct sun and zilch rain this summer! Fortunately have been able to keep it dark green in majority of lawn with core aeration, milorganite treatments, proper irrigation, and of course...lots of beer consumption. Thanks again for all the tips.

    Hey Allyn, could you release some material focusing on in-ground sprinkler system design and settings? Looking at installing a system just not sure where to start.

    I reckon I'm pretty hesitant about the decision to start watering at all, ever. With all that messing around with the hose and sprinkler placement positioning and re-positioning, and putting the hose away, I think the total time dedicated to keeping it watered as recommended would be close to the combined hours of mowing, fertilizer treatments, and killing/preventing weeds put together.

    I like to do a little beer drinking when watering by hand.

    Okay, I love your channel, can you make a watering recommendation for us south westerners (Albuquerque, NM) that have fescue lawns in the dry hot summer (100°, 20-40 % humidity) as to when to water and how much (1 inch twice a week ?) and cool down in the heat of the afternoon, we mostly have small lawns pecan you recommend a channel to watch

    rain water is different from city water and well water, well water and city water have a bunch of chemicals in it which if watered during day could burn depends in what state and city you live in, i live in midland texas and we get heat, no humidity like florida which shields suns burning brightness

    USGA just did a study this past year that effect of watering to reduce turf temps only last 30 minutes to an hour. They showed that it wasn't an effective way to cool turf.

    I wish I had 80 degree days. we are upper 90s with some triple digits and my kbg is struggling. I'll try out misting in the afternoons.

      I used to work on a golf course, when it was too hot in summer for the greens we use to "syringe" the greens IE a mid afternoon hosing down of the green to combat stress. It is used a lot and it is effective.

    went on vacation. neighbor said they would cut the grass. neighbor cut grass after a long rain of many days. came home to short shaven green grass with all burned tops and all of the grass lying on top of the lawn. whats worse? long green grass, or burned grass.

    How much water do you recommend for clay soil? How often would you suggest to water this type of lawn ( soil ) during a drought ?

    So in Iowa it’s over 85 most of summer and early fall. Why don’t we use warm season grasses? Would Bermuda grass be better?

    I bought the sprinkler and the first day I put the 360 pin (paper clip looking pin) up.. just to fiddle around with it.. and then I put it back down. Now, it will only rotate one way and won't go back the opposite direction :( I'm bummed

    What do you know about the irrigation mats that are installed under the sod? That's right Hunter Irrigation makes something that you install under the grass - does that even work?

    Nice Gilmour nozzle! This video came just in time. I know my lawn needs more water. Should the amount of water increase if using organic fertilizer?

    • @TheLawnCareNut
      @TheLawnCareNut  8 лет назад

      the organic fert won't really dictate the water needs in a direct response manner like that. But generally, if you are fertilizing then you will def want to ensure you keep the soil well irrigated so just keep a close eye on things and adjust by "feel"
