  • People interested in moving to Hong Kong always wonder about the cost of living here, so I wanted to outline some of our expenses. Hong Kong is a very expensive place, but frugality can help you save a decent amount. I never intended for this video to be so long, but there was a lot to talk about. This was my first time trying some pencasting.
    I talk about:
    Housing & Utilities
    Groceries
    General Goods
    Restaurants
    Bars
    Transportation
    Other Expenses and Totals
Equipment: Recorded using Techsmith Camtasia on a Microsoft Surface Pro using the digital pen to write in Microsoft Onenote. Audio recorded on a Zoom H1 and cleaned up in Adobe Audition.

Just want to point out some items on your video. First of all very good video. When quoting apartment sizes, a 400 sq ft flat in HK has a usable space of 65-70% so about 280 sq ft. HK in measuring the size of a flat includes the walls, ledges and sometimes elevator shaft. In North America when they quote 500 sq ft you get exactly that amount of living space. As for your internet, it's 100 Mbps as 1G lines are about 120% more than the price you pay. As for Healthcare, medicine via public system is practically free with a token HK$25 fee for about 3 months supply. You are also dead on about living frugally. Incomes go up easily in HK with very little income tax and if you maintain your current frugal lifestyle, your disposal income can be as high as 85% and this is with a larger apartment and services of a Helper. Good luck with your plan to save up for your return to the US. I know a teacher from Canada that worked in HK for three years, saved up and bought two condos in trendy Yaletown in Vancouver. She is now a landlord and a millionaire.

I think you meant 100MB/s for internet. 100GB is ridiculously fast even for industrial fiber connections.

    You mean WhatsApp.
    Heard it’s popular in HK.
You also can call using that app.
It’s very convenient for traveling too!
I use it all the time.

Actually movie tickets can be pretty cheap (several USD) if you know the places and wake up earlier...

Compared with America, almost everything in HK is cheap except housing price.
