    I'm from Hong Kong and living in public house.
    Actually, this video can't show how small the flat sizes in Hong Kong is because the residents in this video was obviously from upper class and they lived in private house. While comparing to the general flat sizes, this is absolutely not representative! The general sizes would be smaller than the examples from this video and what you guys imagine in your mind.

      I've watched other documentaries where they've shown apartments the size of broom closets. So I've generally seem them as being smaller than what's pictured in this video.

      Not to be bias but I will say 70% of HK people live in flats bigger than shown in the video from my experiences. You're properly one of the unfortunate ones in same neighborhood. I'm not denying properly 1 in 3 live in that small size flat and smaller, and that's not including 200,000 living in houses no bigger than a parking slot, including thousands human cages, same with the ones with very large homes. 2/3 of the HK public houses generally look like a regular apartment with a bit less space than the ones in the west but new homes are looking more and more like in this video or worse than this.

    • @arthurwatts1680
      @arthurwatts1680 6 лет назад +4

      I didn't say moving to Singapore (or Vancouver/Sydney etc) was a 'good' idea (unless you are a real estate agent or developer : those folks have made millions from the exodus). Just as many Sydneysiders arent happy with the sharp escalation in prices in their city ( remember, you buy in the same market you sold in, unless you're willing to move cities), I expect that the problem is even worse for Singaporeans who dont have the option to simply move to Melbourne or Brisbane. I've been to Johor, admittedly an option for Singaporeans willing to commute, but I cant say it did much for me.

      Arthur Watts mainland Chinese drive up housing prices not Hong Kong people. Hong Kong are relatively poor and usually rent after they immigrate.

    • @arthurwatts1680
      @arthurwatts1680 6 лет назад +1

      The first time I caught the train from HK to Shenzhen, the mainland Chinese city was definitely the 'poor cousin' : the factory city where HK businessmen kept their mistresses. The tide, it would seem, has turned in favor of Shenzhen. From what I saw of the city during the drive to the airport, I cant say it would be my first choice but I feel the same way about Mumbai, Jakarta and a host of other cities : people go where the money is, and that generates traffic, crime and - in SEA - corruption :(

    This is why VR has extreme potential in Hong Kong because that is the only way people like this can enjoy a reasonable amount of space in their live. People in HK can't even sleep in public areas because those seats are structured (e.g. by dividing into half) by the government so that people can sleep on that. The most popular place for homeless people in HK is McDonald and I have to say McD has been quite generous up to now because they could have shut those homeless people away but they haven't yet done so.

    • @samsun01
      @samsun01 2 года назад

      You're assuming McD is generous. You're clueless about where is the most popular place for the homeless in HK. Nor do you have any clue about VR. Get a life first, son. This is why you're fantasizing about infantile thoughts. I hope you're in jail actually, because your ideas are pretty pathetic.

    Unlike many other countries, Hong Kong is unique in that you cannot claim an empty land, build a house on it and call it a day. All lands in Hong Kong belong to the government and it regularly auctions a piece of valuable land for its treasury income. Since Hong Kong is so tiny, most lands are highly valuable save for the countryside lands which are banned from any construction work unless it passes the legislative council for change of land usage, this is not gonna happen because of strong opposition from environmental activists and leftist legislators. Since recently, even the slightly cheaper and rural lands are used to build micro-apartments because the developer claimed these are affordable for the younger generations which total BS.

    • @chickwithaguitar6876
      @chickwithaguitar6876 5 лет назад +1

      I heard only 25% of land mass in Victoria Island HK/Kowloon & New Territories are zoned for residential. So they ‘reclaim’ the prime land at the harbour in front of waterfront properties that was originally there and make more money and block everyone’s view. Great! Guess it’s easier to pour stone & sand over water than bulldoze though forests and rocks.

      I don't think you got the picture. 73% of Hong Kongs land is undeveloped on purpose. The corrupt government wants land revenue high, and don't care about the social emotional health of the people they serve. Reasearch cage homes. Also now, people are just plain homeless living out of their back parks and carts, sleeping in Mc Donalds everynight or in the park. It ia very bad.

So design wise, a single flat can have lofts for beds, etc. not expanding to another level of the building. Terms are also interchangeable in different parts of the world, condos, flats, apartments, etc.

    Grown ups don't like lofts. This is silly. Efficiencies are great for 2 ppl with a sofa bed. These high ceilings and lofts are a waste of space, and kind of stupid. Of course he feels like a cat. We're not cats.

      Actually, the birth rate in Hong Kong is dropping significantly every year because of the unaffordable living cost and the city is facing problems from the ageing population. The population is rising at a ridiculous rate because of the uncontrolled influx of immigrants from mainland China.
