Taylor actually got a LOT of hate about about her bad rhythm / execution of dance moves. That's one of the reasons for her writing "Shake It Off". She has improved a lot these past few years.

A point not stressed here is that if someone wants to license her music they won't really have a choice (as was mentioned) on which version to use. Taylor has the songwriter right, so she can and HAS blocked permissions on all the recordings owned by Big Machine. She has been denying licenses even if it means she also loses that income, just to make a point and not allow Scooter from profiting on her work. If someone want to license her music, she will only permit the use of Taylor's Versions. Scooter made a post making fun of how he "own Taylor Swift," not her music, but he didn't count on her having the integrity to not comply even if it cost her money and time. She's a boss.

@Goddess He actually sold the masters to someone else pretty quickly, but she's continuing with the re-records to prove a point. There were also articles recently that Scooter told the new buyer she was bluffing about re-recording, to persuade them to buy it.

@@lilmissmalloryy he sold it but he would still get money from the company after the sale, which is why Taylor wouldn't work with the group. They thought as long as he wasnt the owner she'd work with them, but scooter would still be making money off her so she told them no.

What makes it a worse betrayal to Taylor from Borchetta is she was the first signing to his company and was on the journey before it was even created. Before Taylor was ever signed to Big Machine she earned a development deal with RCA which is why her family moved to Tennessee. At contract renewal she opted to leave since they wouldn't let her write her own songs. After, she became the youngest person to be signed to a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. Again at contract renewal she walked away as they wouldn't let her release music until she was 18 or write all her own songs. At 14 years old she was courting Universal when Scott Borchetta, who worked there, went to see her at The Bluebird Café and told her he could help her get signed with Universal or he could guarantee she could write her own songs if she took a chance on a label he was planning on creating after his Universal contract was up (if I remember correctly 6 months was left). She called him a week later herself saying she would wait for him. Then Borchetta, her, and some others would have weekly secret meetings discussing the label's creation. Someone Borchetta worked under gave him the green light to leave a few months early, so he called everyone up and told them. Then, he got the label running and signed Swift first, who was 15 at the time. Borchetta named the company Big Machine to be ironic, as at the time they had 15 employees and no furniture. Thus, even though you can't trust anyone in business, it was extra hurtful when Borchetta, who'd known her half her life, made skits in vlogs with her, danced at awards shows with her, etc, sold her masters to one of only a handful of people she dislikes.

I just want to add it was more than dislike. Scooter was deeply tied in with Kanye who has bullied and tried to ruin her career since she was 19 for no reason. Scooter was a straight up enemy. And the reason she walked away from Big Machine was because she knew Scott was going to sell the label and she wouldn't have her bargaining power. He offered her the option to "buy" her masters one at a time as she created new albums. For each new album, which he would then have the rights to, he would give her the rights to an old album. She recognized that there was literally no way for her to own all of her music that way and decided to make the leap.

Very exited for all re-recordings. She did Fearless and this month she re-released Red. Both albums are amazing plus there are vault songs as she calls them. It’s not just that she didn’t wanted to sign again with big machine, but she wanted to purchase her masters and own the new ones, but they said she could only regain the rights of each old album after each new one she launched, so she probably would take like another 10, 15 years to be able to regain the rights to all her albums, while being attached to big machine these entire time. And when they saw she wouldn’t accept this deal, instead of offering her the masters for money they decided to sell it to another person. It wasn’t about the money because she could afford it, they chose to sell it to scooter in order to affect her

Taylor is adding even more value to here new versions by adding vault songs...Take her album Red for example. The original had 16 tracks, the extended version had 22 and the one she owns Red Taylors version has 30 tracks. So Taylor isnt just releasing the album in its original state but adding to it adding even more incentive to buy her rerecorded stuff. You should check out her 10 minute version of All too well, it broke the record for longest song to hit number 1 on the billboard 100 (Previous holder was American pie by Don Mclean) Don Mclean took Taylor breaking his record with grace saying "Let’s face it, nobody ever wants to lose that #1 spot, but if I had to lose it to somebody, I sure am glad it was another great singer/songwriter such as Taylor." Fifteen years, fifteen million tears
    Begging 'til my knees bled
I gave it my all, he gave me nothing at all
    Then wondered why I left

Loved the video! Although, I think it's pretty unfair of you to say that Taylor solidified beauty standards and having to be good at everything, that's just something that, as she says in Miss Americana, is sadly a necessity for women artists and she just played the game in order not to become irrelevant. For a male pop artist the same outfit and a guitar are enough to be successful, but for women they need to dance and do crazy moves (see not only how people mocked Taylor for not being able to dance but also Dua Lipa, the bullying got so harsh at some point that she took several dance lessons for her next album and although the results are amazing -see Dua Lipa's Grammys performance- the way she had to get there is really sad. Nobody would bully Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles or Justin Bieber into learning how to dance because for them grabbing a guitar or a microphone and walking around the stage is enough but for women artists they have to be crazy dancers too). Women also have to reinvent themselves a lot more, Justin and Ed have been doing the same thing for years and the public still eats it up but female artists who fail to keep the public interested in them eventually fade out (see Katy Perry)

    • @Emma-vd6zf
      @Emma-vd6zf 3 года назад +30

Agree with this 100% - if a female pop artist can’t dance or doesn’t fit the exact body ideals of the time, she is vilified for it. Taylor had a very severe eating disorder for years because of the beauty standards forced upon her by the entertainment industry. Don’t blame women, blame the misogynistic and stifling society they have to live in…

Yeah, about being a "whole package" kind of performer, I'd say it was brought a lot more by artists who came before her, like Britney, Janet Jackson or Beyonce, in the late 90s, or early 2000s... especially considering how late in her career she went to pop and started doing less performances where she just sang and played an instrument (in 2014, when the aforementioned artists were pretty established already)

Agree, I was gonna say, it was not Taylor who solidified it (I am saying this especially since this is the 2nd time you kinda make the same type of comment about her perpetuating it), it was the industry, the fact that she HAPPENS to be a naturally pretty person or a naturally thin person does not mean that she is condoning the behavior or the standard, otherwise, you are kinda saying that for her to show her opposition to the standard she has to what? gain tons of weight just 'cuz or do something to her face? she has NEVER said, "this is what beauty should be" unlike some other people who shall not be named (KK and family) that based their entire "career" on being or creating the modern standard of beauty.
Now if you mean unwittingly, sure I could totally see your point BUT once again it was never her saying "this is how you NEED to look like" it is how the INDUSTRY USED her as the poster child. and I believe that is why she addressed it in the documentary to show that EVEN she who WAS considered the standard had an eating disorder because of THAT pressure.

I’d actually push back on the idea that she’s solidified the classic idea of a pop star. I think in a lot of ways she did the opposite. Part of what I connected to with her from the beginning of her career when we were both teens is that she’s never really prioritized sexiness or coolness. Not that she’s never any of those things or she thinks those things are bad but it’s just not at the forefront of what she does. Even in her ~sexiest~ era (1989) there was public obsession with the fact that she never showed her bellybutton. I’d also point out that Taylor has really created the expectation now that current pop stars write their own music or co write their music (or at the very least pretend to 👀) which was not the case previously. Now it’s an expectation and something the public is interested in knowing and that pop stars want known. Some pop stars have in the past of course, but it wasn’t a focus of their career or emphasized in the press like Mariah Carey for example who wrote all of her huge hits but I think only started getting her due as a songwriter later in her career.

about what you said at the end how she solidifies things like you have to be beautify and a good dancer: she can't do anything about being pretty lol but she is NOT a born dancer. A lot of people actually made fun of her because she dances to have fun and not to look "cool". The live performances are just choreography and kind of like a part of her response to people saying that she can't do it. She likes to just jam out to songs like a normal person. Also shake it off whole video is about how it's okay to not be good at stuff and be different as log as you're having fun and being yourself. Another thing is that before highshool she used to be "that weird kid who writes songs" and she was an outcast so it's like she knows both sides.
In conclusion: to a fan it's more like she in encouraging everyone to be comfortable in their own skin, she's making fun of those who are "too cool for school", and her advise is to find people who appreciate how weird as you are and love you for that.

Taylor has since stated the reason she left big machine was because she said she knew there were whispers Scott was going to sell big machine once she resigned which would make the label more valuable. She said she considered staying still if she was afforded the right to at least bid for her masters, and Scott instead informed her that he would allow her the very special privilege of EARNING one old album back, for each new one she was willing to record for big machine, essentially trapping her in an endless cycle of servitude.

I think one thing about it that really helps this diluted value thing, people who grew up with albums is they likely already own copies(digital or physical) are the ones most likely to feel connected with the original masters, but they can easily just stream the new ones and listen to the old ones on their existing copies. So the only people buying the old ones are a small subgroup of people that don’t know what’s going on or just don’t care. But for the most part she’s destroyed the value of the masters.

I know many artists who have no control over how they are marketed and their own image because many record deals have an image clause that they use to trap them and pressure them into doing what they want.

A small percentage of the population who are huge fans of her can tell the difference! Very smart of her to re- record her music! I am not really a fan of her music, but kudos to her for not letting the industry steal from her!!

She definitely sounds better on the rerecording, but somehow I think the production on the new one is a little bit different due to different producers.

She pushed new artists to write their own music and be more involved in the music process instead of just singing other peoples songs. Taylor is the biggest artist championing fair compensation and ensuring streaming companies are paying the artists more for their songs being streamed. Her billboard women of the year speeches really shows an insight into where she stands with the music industry.

No one should make more money off of someone's art than that artist. Whether that's the singer, band, songwriter, no one should be allowed to leech off of artists that much.

I mean just look at how successful red re-record was. Over Half a million album sales first week and a 10 minute #1 global hit. It’s crazy. She is the only person to have a re-record at #1, and she has 2 of them now. She is quickly approaching Elvis Presley for 2nd most weeks at number one. Last year she passed Michael Jackson to be in third.

Hi, Andy! I'm re-watching all your videos and noticing that I never "liked" the videos the first time I watched them. So, I'm "liking" them now as I re-watch. Somehow I think this fits the re-recording theme, but in a weird way. DOES ANY OF THIS MAKE ANY SENSE??? Help.

Taylor Swift is the music industry.
Also, Scooter and Scott should have known better. She's savage in some of her breakup songs. She never names names but you can see the Easter eggs in many videos. For example in "The Man" there's a "no scooter" sign in the background.

One of her most brilliant moves is that she has forced people to work with her. She has denied licensing to anyone to use her music unless they use her new recordings. She actually doesn't have the right to rerecord REPUTATION yet because it hasn't been long enough. There was a show that she was a big fan of that wanted to use one of the songs off of Reputation so she had her brother and best friend/producer Jack Antanoff make a "cover" of the song under a suedonym band name. Since a cover does not involve using the master recording the label couldn't block her as she had been doing them. She was able to sell one of her songs without giving Braun a dime. She also let Olivia Rodrigo interpolate parts of one of the songs off that album so that they wouldn't make any money again. She has out smarted them at every turn.

they reached out to her but, Scooter Braun is still affiliated with them -- so, Taylor declined working with them because it would still profit HIM. She published the letter she sent to them in a response - you can find it on the internet.

That is hilarious, you saying you must be beautiful and a better dancer...lol Taylor was criticized for her awkward dancing, and having no technique. She made fun of herself in Shake it Off. Watch it again. She even became way to thin after being criticized for her body. Taylor is 5'11", so at times she does appear awkward, and her Swifties LOVE her even more for that. She was not popular in school, not the cheerleader. She was so focused on writing songs and her career, she was more of a loner. Yes, she is beautiful, but she's also criticized for being beautiful, which you just did. As, everyone's idea of beauty is different. You need to listen to some of the things she says to her swifties during tour performances, and when she spends time with them. She is caring and supportive, at all times. She's very generous with her money. Giving 100k and up bonus for even her truck drivers. Look that up too. She donates to every food bank in cities where she has her tours. And brings in billions of $ in revenue. I did enjoy your reaction, except for that, incorrect assumption at the end.
