as a detailer... i have kept my stepdads 2011 1500 as clean as possible in maine.. i wash it more than anyone does... and still couldnt stop the rear fenders from rusting out.. only surface rust now... but im gonna wire wheel everything.. then bondo a bit on the outside and ave paint matched paint.. gonna wire brush the inside and use a primer, then some good undercoating for the inside fenders... hopefully it will look good and last more than 10 years
That would make it look better for a while, I don’t think 10 years though, it may last a little longer using duraglass or Everglass instead of bondo, it’s a little more waterproof , thanks for stopping by
This seems to be a common rust area on pickups ....I see Chevies, Dodges/Rams, and Fords, often less than 10 years old with rust and rot above the rear wheel wells.
I'm doing the exact same thing for my 2013 Silverado. I had already bought the outer patch panels and found that I could buy just the upper arch portion of the inner fender. They accomplish the same solution as what you ended up doing by cutting the full inner fender. Now that I have the inner fender repaired, I am kinda stuck on how to hold the outer panel in place so I can tack weld it. I can't really get any clamps up there because the inner panel is now welded in. I reckon I'll end up using sheet metal screws temporarily and weld up the holes after the panel is fully welded. There is probably a better way...
I would clamp it around the bottom with 2 or 3 vice grips and hold in the top and put a few tack welds on the top to hold it, but that’s just me, I’m sure it will work
@@hazelwoodgarage Thanks. I know in the cab corners of my '03 Silverado there was foam. Thought it was also the case for the bed sides in the newer 07-13 models.
About to do the same to mine this spring. How many days does this usually take. Keep in mind it's my first time doing this. Just wondering because I'm 17 and need transportation to school.
These were rusty enough that they came apart with a little twisting, I drilled the spot welds with a quarter inch drill bit the pull the inner fenders apart
They do sell just the inner, upper center sections of the wheelhouse instead of the entire panel. Naturally, they're a fraction of the price of the entire wheelhouse.
My 2013 is just bubbling through. Steel on vehicles has not been any good since 1955. With the current prices of these trucks they are worth rebuilding

I always wondered how this was repaired and put together, thanks for the video!
I would have liked to have seen how you grind the spot welds smooth and how you filled things to make it smooth. Thanks!’

Great job! about how much cost to pay a professional to replace both rear sides and paint?

Look up Cleco pins....you hole punch the panels and pop pins in with Cleco tool
@@vertebrae3352 I have never heard of this product before but it looks like a great option.
Andy was there any foam in the seam where the two fender panels met? I always thought that was the main culprit of these rusting out.
I don’t think I have ever seen that, sometimes I see seam sealer where the panels meet though

glue the lip, weld the innner
