Hello everyone and welcome back to our channel. Today, we are diving into a topic that has sparked a lot of curiosity among our viewers: the common signs of covert narcissism. While grandiose narcissism, often referred to as overt narcissism, is relatively straightforward to identify due to its overt characteristics such as domineering behavior, arrogance, a pronounced sense of superiority, sanctimonious attitudes, and a pronounced resistance to any form of criticism, covert narcissism presents a more complex challenge.
Covert narcissism is aptly named as it tends to operate beneath the surface, making it significantly harder to detect, especially in the initial stages. Individuals with covert narcissism might come across as self-deprecating or insecure, exhibiting a heightened sensitivity to criticism. However, similar to their overt counterparts, they display a pronounced sense of entitlement, are often disagreeable, have a perpetual need for validation and attention, and show a lack of empathy towards others.
One of the complexities of covert narcissism is that it can easily be mistaken for introversion, shyness, or anxiety. Indeed, individuals with covert narcissism can experience these feelings. However, they harbor a deep-seated craving for attention. They thrive on positive feedback, admiration, and sympathy but are also exceptionally vulnerable to negative feedback and rejection. The behaviors associated with covert narcissism are long-term and pervasive, rather than sporadic or occasional.
Although there are similarities between the characteristics observed in grandiose narcissism and covert narcissism, the manner in which these traits are manifested differs significantly.
The first sign of covert narcissism is a pervasive sense of unfulfillment and a constant stream of negative emotions. Covert narcissists often place undue emphasis on their pain and difficulties, believing their problems to be far more significant than those of others. They tend to experience a high degree of negativity in their lives, which they frequently exaggerate either to garner attention or to shirk responsibility. This can often lead to self-sabotaging behavior.
