I know exactly what you mean, I used to imagine doing just that! However, although we were told all those trims and outtakes were thrown out, it turns out that's not true. Roddenberry kept the majority of them, some of which you can see in a highly recommended Blue-ray DVD called "The Roddenberry Vault." Worth checking out if you want to see more unused footage.
It's not that bad. Not a stellar episode, but certainly not a two 10. As much as Season 3 gets trashed, it does have a few gems. Also, Spock is on point throughout the entire series, minus the pilot episodes.
