  • How much fuel did we each use on our 2 1/2 day adventure across the Rubicon? The Rubicon trail is a long arduous adventure through the mountains of northern California. The BleepinJeep team did it with Jeep Cherokee XJ's, Wrangler TJ's, in both automatic and manual transmissions, gasoline, and diesel engines. Lets take a look at the miles per gallon each vehicle took to run this epic trail!

Hi, I have a question from my ignorance... i have a 2001 xj with 32" and mi 4.0lt engine reaches 15MPG with difficulty....axles are standard and I didn´t change any other issue related to this... in my country gasoline increases its price every week and I was thinking about doing a diesel swap (it costs here 25% less than Gas)....but I´m curious about the power that this VW engine can have for off-roading....can you tell us if apart from good MPG average, has your TJ good off-road performance? is there on your youtube site a video for watching an example? thanks in advance! greetings from santiago

Hi there, I own two cars with a vw tdi, an older pump injected 1.9 and a PD 1.9 (I believe the same you have Nate). Both are very good engines, not overly powerful in stock but reliable and take next to nothing. Both have a long term fuel economy around 43 mpg. I also have an XJ with very much hated 2.5tdi VM engine. It does not offer a lot power but seem to be alright with up to 33" tires. I get about 20 mpg on and offroad. Not too bad but nowhere close to the others. So I've been thinking about staying with diesel and swapping a vw tdi into my xj but got to a dead end. The funny thing is that even tho the engines have their origin in Europe, you guys in the States seem to have a lot more support than we have. I have asked around about pairing a vw tdi with the original transmission (AX15) and it is a big no-no. Everyone I talked to just looked at me like I was crazy or something. Anyone here from Europe with some expirence? Would be greatly appreciated. Cheerios, Martin

Interesting results - guess the diesel option Jeep keeps promising will be a hit when it hits the show-room sometime in FCA's future. My 4.0 XJ only has to overcome the inertia of 30" tires and gets as much as 19.4mpg coming down from the sierras on the interstate to around 13 going the other way. Though I wouldn't dream of doing the Rubicon Trail in my rig, the better gas mileage was an advantage on the 110 miles of the Mojave Road!

I have a low mileage 2005 TJ with a strong running 4.0l with 6 speed manual and I say your trail MPG is spot on. However you 1.9 TDI engine swap intrigues me. My computer seems to be my weak link. I’m getting ready to get my 3rd computer because for some reason my O2 sensor heater controller on the CPU burns out. First time it was replaced under warranty but now at 105,000 it’s not warrantied. All sensors and related relays have been changed so it’s not an electrical problem down stream. Anyway eventually the 4.0 will go away and I’m wondering how all the electrical adaptations went with your swap? I haven’t been motivated to fixe the CPU because it still runs and goes into closed loop mode. Been running it that way the last 5,000 miles.

I don't know how much the difference in weight would help in milage. It would definitely be a great little video for a test.

Tires absorb alot of energy the bigger you go! The last leg of this trip was all freeway on the way to the gas station. We drove up donner pass (7800 feet elevation) I was driving 65 fine until the top of the pass I let up and dropped down to about 55. The intake air temperature was getting a little hot pulling a grade at such a high elevation. Nothing a bigger intercooler can't fix!

    • @bghouse2853
      @bghouse2853 5 лет назад

right bigger intercooler would do the trick. I'm getting about 20mpg around town with my setup but if I try running 70 on the highway I'm at 3000rpm and my mpg's drop to about 8. This swap seems like it could get pricey but the longevity and saving would make up for the costs

Damon Richter depends on what your looking for out of a 4x4. A auto transmission is basically like having 2x the gear reduction for crawling, not to mention you can't really stall a auto. While i would love a manual with a 4:1 or higher transfer case, the auto version of my XJ is more common, and cheaper to buy, and that's not even including the cost of a 4:1.
As for engine braking, with 4.56 gear's and 33's the auto will go plenty slow enough down a steep hill for me, i barely touch the brakes.

We've been driving diesel engines here in Europe for ages now, and they have good economy, but they make terrible commuters unless you hit medium to high speeds and have to drive quite a lot. In short trips or city commutes where the engine oil doesn't even get to temperature (water will) you'll find out that they start to fail quite a lot after a while. EGR valves, turbo failures, particle filters, flow sensors all go to crap because of the carbon buildup.
The engines themselves are more complex than gas ones too, and usually more expensive to repair.
So yeah, a typical 2l. diesel is fine for highway but not so much for commuting, and contrary to general belief, it's better for the engine to be revved up instead of being tempted by the torque down low and shift gears at 2k.

By the BTU ... gas = 180,000 btu / gallon. Diesel fuel oil = 243,000 btu / gallon [30% more than gas as per video] . ... you are burning the same amounts of btu's but not the same gallons to move the same weight and overcome the same frictions. And remember that resistance through air squares as speed doubles. And we drive boxes through air. Not lima beens.
1,000 btu / cubic foot of natural gas,. And 2,600 btu / cubic foot of propane. more for butane. With electric ... 3,412 btu / 1 kW.
Fuel ratios to burn gas = 14.7 to 1 ~ diesel ratio is 10.0 to one to burn.
To meet the Federal CAFE requirements all car body designs come out of the wind tunnels looking very similar. No personality any more in styling ... YuckO~!~!
And that my friends is the story of the demise of the 5,300 lb Jeep Commander with 3.7-4.7-5.7 family of engines making 11 to 13 mpg ... that and the gear ratios ... way too many rpm's at speed on cruise.
My 1999 5.4 Ford Expedition had better mileage and turned under 1,500 rpm's at 62 mph. She lasted 315,000 miles before the body rusted off in Wisconsin.
