1080 steel. I consider 0.80% carbon in steel to be a sweet spot for edge retention and toughness. I like the steel, and the design, but I think the price, for the steel, is on the high side.

Maybe for the raw steel, but you didn't factor in the small batch handmade labor. You're paying for the years of honing a craft by a craftsman.

Many different steels can have great edge retention and sharpness. As a bladesmith, I think people often over-focus on the steel itself rather than other factors, like the temperature the blade was tempered at, whether or not it was forged or stock removal, and angle of the bevel. Just a few examples that play into the working life of the edge of a blade, and personally I've made some dynamite blades from much lower carbon steel that were my number one skinning/animal processing blades for their great edge retention while working around bone. Same goes for blades made of much higher carbon steel. I have an axe I forged with a forged welded 1095 edge. Many people would say that way too high carbon for a heavy impact tool like an axe. Through tempering at a higher temperature (over a coal forge I might add, not a professional heat treating oven) I achieved a resilient edge and that axe has earned it's place as my number 2 bushcraft companion tool behind my knife. Everyone has their preference, but I believe how the blade was made matters just as much as the material it was made from.

That depends on how large the knife is!
My 8 inch utility style knife for certain tasks... then yes.
My heavy blade Machete especially when paired with the Silky Bigboy 2000... then no.
I ditched the axes and hatchet a long time ago and will only take an axe when I have conveyance and a serious need for chopping!

Well actually... All the dictionaries define a machete as "a Large broad heavy knife"! :-)
I have 2... One with an 18 inch blade and the other with a 12 inch blade.

You can buy comparable knives for 1/10 the price. It is massively overpriced.

@@ShrikeofCrows places like condor have similar stuff but you would have to change the bevel and put a microbevel on it, and regardless it still isn't the same knife.
