    I would love to hear more from the CTO. All over forums you'll see people complain that all boutique brands are just putting out the same products. Glad Chris could share some light that just because it's blended at B&B, doesn't at all mean it's just the same formula. People don't care where their fruits and veggies come from at the store, yet they get their panties in a bunch over car care products?

    Excellent interview Pan!
    The example of brick (graphene oxide) and mortar (ceramic base) was great. Another good analogy for that is tile (graphene) and grout (ceramic base). The tile needs very little maintenance it's the grout that fills the space between tiles that needs the maintenance.
    I'd like to see this type of interview regarding other car care products.

      @PanTheOrganizer  4 года назад +1

      I agree Paul. And this is one reason I like to have open discussions with experts in the industry, so we can get more information and be able to make smarter purchase decisions as customers. I always tell people to try the product, and if it's not for you, then you're in luck, as there are thousands and thousands of other products to choose from. It's sad to see that some people discard new technologies right off the bat, without even having tried them, just because they "think they know" how it all works. I draw my own conclusions based on my own experience with products, also based on my personal observations.

      pan hit it on the head....its how they are asking the question.....graphene in its 2 dimentional state(pure) cannot be put on a vehicle.....they are asking if it has graphene in it - NOT if graphene oxide is in it......so the naysayers are correct that graphene in its purest state cannot be applied....probably never will be due to cost to get it to that state.....currently it is found in supercomputers in pure form since it can conduct electricity(supercompute) at almost half the speed of light

    • @ctsvmapper

      Here is why complaining is a must. Trying for yourself is exactly how one is duped into thinking the product truly works as described while promoting it. This is false advertising, which is an unlawful offence in most countries and we should not be promoting charlatan claims. People make money from false advertising of graphene product, charging more for the same protection one would get spending less that doesn't say graphene on it. No consumer should be okay with this, perhaps you don't mind being ripped off? These products work because they have ceramic. Here is why one can deduce its a sham without even having to try the product. The claim is enhanced properties with Graphene. First, there are many scientific papers which show that a very high percent of the PRODUCED Graphene is counterfeit or degraded to the point of not being 'graphene' effective and is a real concern among the scientific bodies. Its severely unlikely automotive detailing producers aren't even using valid single or ISO approved stacked graphene to begin with. Detailers are not getting the rare amount of good stuff (valid) in the world. Second, Other uses such as plating, batteries, electrical and other industrial application use of graphene have very costly and complicated processes, such as CVD to apply and validate. Third, there is no scientific means of arranging this allotrope carbon lattice onto a vehicle surface without breaking the single or ISO 10 layer arrangement. Forth. Somehow the automotive industry magically got around all the challenges and you can drip it out of a bottle and just wipe it on. I also do not agree this is okay and throw the Marketing excuse out there. Post Grape cereal printed prevent and cures appendicitis and malaria on their boxes, because marketing steered towards what customers wanted to hear. Kinda amusing nothing changes.

      @@ctsvmapper if u are talking about graphene in its pure form of 1 atom 2 dimensional state.....u are correct. auto detailing will never use graphene in its purest form like other industries(electrical/semiconductor) due to the extreme cost of processing pure graphene. as stated in this and most vids about the detailing products promoting graphene.....the material used is graphene oxide.....which is clear in color. your problem is with the marketing of these products.....not the fact that they do perform better in many ways than ceramic. mr gallaher addresses the marketing need for using the catchword "graphene".......he even addresses the need for graphite in the bottles....so that the consumer will relate to the benefits of graphene/oxide....the molecular structure is the same. imho this video explained the technology and gave us a clear/transparent understanding what is being used and how it is being formulated so that we may make an educated decision if we want to use it

    I do believe graphene coatings are going to be the coating of the future, but i also believe it is still in it's infancy for being as good as advertised. That, however, is to be understood, because graphene itself is still be studied. I really like reading about flash graphene and how graphene is being created from even trash. I am still not sold on how well infusing graphene oxide has improved the product yet. I have seen too many test where graphene coatings is still not shown a major advantage than a great SiO2 product like Turtle Wax Seal N Shine. I am looking forward to more new products coming out that are truly Revolutionary and it is coming fast. Thanks again for another phenomenal video that in truly informational. I do think that eventually you are going to see this technology actually added to the actual paint during the production of the car, which will limit the amount of detailing that will be required from a detailing spray.

    Totally awesome! Really great information on graphine, and the industry. Chris refers to the Blenders as an invisible hand, I think he just strengthened the detailing world, by showing us who B&B is, what they do and thier incredible capabilities, as well as the capabilities of thier raw material suppliers. It's no different than the car you drive, most of the components are bought from suppliers, a good portion are designed, developed and manufactured by the supply base. You and Chtis just blazed a new trail by educating the consumer in who and what are behind these products. A few questions: 1. How does a blender keep the products unique enough for thier customers, especially with the more complicated and expensive products such as ceramic and graphine coatings? 2. With the reduction in VOCs in automotive paint systems, and the move to water based clear coats, do you see graphine oxide being used in automotive paint, if so how far into the future? 3. We have just seen the White Hats in the detailing industry. How about the Black Hats? What is behind these companies who do put out snake oil and junk that is highly marketed on social media, and how do they survive? In order to survive that have to have somehow maintained a loyal customer base, as well as continually increasing it.

    • @cgallahar
      @cgallahar 4 года назад +1

      1. That's one of the difficulties of my team's role - how do you keep everyone feeling unique? The more complicated the formula, usually the easier this is as then we have a lot of 'knobs' to turn to accentuate specific qualities or highlight different functionalities, price points, activity levels, or take the blend in an entirely different direction. That goes to say then, that the simpler the formula the harder it is to differentiate.
      2. There's already work being done to upgrade/update clear coat systems utilizing some of these new technologies and I imagine it's likely a cost/benefit commercials issue for many at this point. It'll get there eventually.
      3. By 'Black Hats' you mean the "bad guys"? There are quite a few brand that seem like they're promoting an inferior product or over exaggerating the claims... I think that's true of just about any consumer good, regardless of industry. How do they survive? They don't... It's make the money while it's to be made and then get out. Simply put.

    Pan, that was awesome and insightful. Many thanks to you and Chris. Clearly he has a very deep understanding of what this technology is and can explain it so well. I was really pleased about what he said about thermal properties. I know from my background that the statements about graphene coatings lowering surface temperature had to be incorrect. There is no way something that thin can have good thermal conductive properties. The metal in the panel is so significantly a better thermal conductor than any atom-level coating could be, that it is laughable to claim otherwise.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  4 года назад

    • @simongibbs7224
      @simongibbs7224 4 года назад

      I am no coatings expert but I have done limited academic studies of Graphene and it is one of the most thermally conductive materials known. In the region of 2,000 - 4,000W/mK. I work in the field of adhesives and an average, very thick film in comparison Epoxy would be around 3-4W/mK

    • @peterholmes2089
      @peterholmes2089 4 года назад +1

      @@simongibbs7224 You made me realize my early thinking was incorrect. I was imagining the heat flowing away laterally through the coating. In this direction, the thermal conduction would be poor (since the coating is not a single continuous graphene matrix). However, if I think of this as heat flowing through the coating, through the paint and into the metal, then the thermal conduction would be good. In fact, any material when thin enough would be a good conductor, graphene or no. The thermal transfer coefficient (or admittance) is dependent on material thickness. For a coating that is likely 0.1mil or less thick, this is going to be negligible relative to paint which is around 8mils and has poor thermal conductivity.

    Very interesting.
    To play devil's advocate; what does surprise me though [as another hosts last upload evidenced] don’t the companies do their own “wash tests” to see how their products stand up prior to sending their “latest” to you guys. Are they rushing the latest “buzz word” to market to jump on the consumer carousel or are they utilizing hosts as live R&D in no different a way as smaller producers use a mixing factor to develop a product? How far can the technology be stretched?
    [The way the world is going it won’t be long before car manufacturers offer a costed factory option to have ceramic/graphene hybrid infused carbon clearcoat within their reduced 2mil total painted surface to save weight, hyp more mpg and market it as an eco-friendly self-cleaning hard-wearing durable surface requiring less maintenance].

    • @cgallahar
      @cgallahar 4 года назад +3

      You're exactly right. Yes, we do plenty of tests prior to a customer launching a product, but very often something is challenged in ways it wasn't intended to be. Essentially, a product 'A' is created to be extremely easy to use, error-proof during application, but then gets challenged for its durability against product 'B' which is, objectively, harder to apply and not as easy to use and was designed for that challenge. It can cause a misrepresentation of the purpose of the product and make it seem silly that it ever made it to market.
      To your other point, yes, I absolutely agree with you that these technologies will be built into materials further upstream in the supply chain and at OEM levels - perhaps that's already happening. ;)

Every day here in the UK my local rats are gorging on berries and depositing bright pink pressies for me to deal with. Either that or my current "go-to" has an inbuilt “X” invisible to the human eye!

      @@13pcbs That's certainly more realistic than subjugating a panel, with a product applied, to a battery of back-to-back degreasers, yo-yoing the pH with acids and alkali-heavy degreasers, and using harsh solvents to attempt to demonstrate the durability. As Pan said, it's entertaining and interesting to see what happens, but, please, don't take this as the end-all-be-all demonstration of a product's performance - we, as formulators, aren't formulating the products to be applicable to this type of punishment and it's more of an aside.

    What, if any, impact does graphene oxide have on gloss? And gloss retention?

    • @cgallahar
      @cgallahar 4 года назад +3

      The coating resins, including those containing graphene oxide, will typically continue the trend of a cold, metallic, mirror-type gloss instead of a warm richness that a more natural based wax, such as carnauba, generates. The gloss intensity is often a function of the loading level of the resin(s) within the product and the ability to lay down as much theoretical maximum film thickness as possible. Gloss retention then comes in the form of maintaining that coating film's appearance via self cleaning effects and scratch/mar resistance, which the graphene oxide containing resins seem to be quite sturdy. Hope this helps!

    Any health risks or benefits associated with graphene when compared to ceramic. How much is absorved into the body and how does it behave?

    Love this video Pan. Thanks a lot for helping to inform the consumers. Videos like this really help to eliminate all the confusion surrounding chemistry in the detailing world. A lot of value in this interview. Thank you!

    IMHO, graphene is still a buzz word for me, but can’t wait until this gets perfected where graphene is not an additive

      What graphene based products have you tested so far?

      @@PanTheOrganizer I coated 2 cars this fall, Glassparency Graphene and did another car with Armor Shield 9 , both great to use (thanks to your reviews!). Topped the graphene with Turtle wax. And topped the the Armor Shield with mother’s CMX. Will say am impressed with Glassparency, and very happy with the Armor Shield, however even after watching you, Matt, and Larry, I’m still expecting more from graphene in the years to come that will be even more impressive.
