I was all ready to congratulate you on using flux. It makes sooooo much difference. But then we saw that dirt soldering iron tip, and you totally lost my respect. If you don't have a sponge, even a workshop cloth folded and made damp will clean the tip if you drag the tip across the cloth. Another trick is to melt flux cored solder onto the tip and flick it off. That can keep a 'reasonably clean' tip in good condition, but the tip we saw needs some serious attention. A good soldered joint should be bright and shiny - the joint you made was dull with black flecks, and really nasty.
