Ooomg I've gone through so many feed bags over the years and never once thought of doing something this adorable with them! I saw a feed bag Christmas stocking tutorial before finding this video, and now I know exactly what I'm going to do with my feed bags from now on. Thank you for posting this tutorial!
I just made 3 of these bags, but they were sewn. Yours is the easiest I have seen and will be starting to do it your way, just need to go to town for some colored duck tape! Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️👍🏼
Made sure to empty the grain bag with out damaging it this am. Going to make this for my sons bday coming up...he adores his chickens! :) Thanks for a great easy tutorial!
I have NEVER commented on a video but this is definitely worth it!!! I have made the sewn version of these, but needed to use upholstery thread for strength - which gave my sewing machine horrible trouble!! I absolutely love using the duct tape on these!!! "SEW" easy! (lol) Plus, I will be able to sell them at a lower cost and my children won't have to be exposed to my frustration and profanity!!
Just wanted to say this video was amazing and inspiring. I've probably made 10-20 of these bags using horse feed sacks and they work amazing! I've made a few modifications regarding the top edge and handles to make the bags a bit sturdier and the results are amazing. I have filled one of these bags with 20lbs of apples and it handled it just fine. Grocery shopping: handles multiple milk jugs just fine! Thank you so much for making this video and inspiring others. Feels great to make something environmentally friendly that is so quick and easy to make!
Basically I used more duct tape around the handles instead of just the one piece used to attach the handles to the bag as shown here. I can try and post a picture of the modifications I made on here later.
Thanks for this. I've been saving bird seed bags, and have attempted one or two on the sewing machine, but I'm just not that crafty. I have a feeling even I can do this. Thanks again for saving some bags from the landfill.
One thing to add that might help add strength to bag, is cutting a sturdy, good quality piece of cardboard to fit the bottom of the bag and reinforce it, plus it helps to keep the shape. I love this idea and project, and that you recycled! Awesome! And also awesome that you raise chickens. My best friend does this and for a short period I was living with them and enjoyed visiting the chickens. Aside from the morning rooster thing, =P chickens can be so peaceful and relaxing to watch. Many are also actually sweet and docile. I got pretty attached to them. =) You always remind me so much of my dear friend, and I love all your ideas. Enjoyable as always to watch.
What a great way to make a bag. Got to get rid of those plastic bags from the grocery stores. Thank you for sharing your great ideas. Would love to see more !!
I roll the top edge down a couple of times for added structure then taped it to the inside of the bag. Keeps it open while you're filling it. You can also use the cut off bit to make your straps, folding it in thirds and taping it. Uses less tape and it's stronger than just the tape.
OMGosh, I love this! I was making the ones you sew and the plastic material is not easy to work with in a sewing machine. Also went through a lot of needles and takes longer than this. I can't wait to try this!!
love the bag project Lindsay now I know what to do with all my extra dog food bag I have a service dog so I always have to carry her stuff along with me in the car wonderful way to do it Lindsay you are so talented
One thought regarding the handles. If you make they an extra 6" long, you could cut a slit in the bag wide enough for the handle to slip through by 3" on each side. Tape the outside as you have been, and also put two pieces of tape across the handle on the inside. Neat project!
I would totally try this, but I don't have any grain bags and don't see them in my future. I bet those kinds of feed bags are strong on their own. Thank you for the tutorial it was cute and cleaver.
Love this is a no sew project as I have been sewing them for years but they really mess up your sewing machine. I would love for you to do this with multiple feed bags to make a tarp for say a chicken coop.
I recommend you anchor the handles with a grommet or stitch an X so your handles won't come off while you are carrying heavy items like milk and eggs. I love the idea and keep them coming....thank you.
They can also be sewn too. I made one from a cat food bag a few years back, so if anyone is concerned about the handles being duct taped on they could use that extra bag strip to make handles and sew them on.
@@cortneywoodall2246 wow that's great news.... Maybe I'm thinking that the bag is just a thicker 'material'. (we have cat and dog feed bags) but it's like a really cheap tarp like weave now that I think about it....wider type stitches I would think. But I can experiments at least I feel more confident thank you for the info.
Me You you’re welcome. I’ve made all my totes out of horse grain bags and they are pretty thick tight woven bags. 🙂 we are selling them for my local horse rescue as a fundraiser.
Cute idea! Thanks for the vid! The only bags I get like these are from my Tractor Supply Co dog food - There are usually lots of crumbs/bits inside so I'd have to thoroughly clean it out. I also wondered about how strong the handles would be. But I might try it for bags to keep in the car - always need to tote stuff here and there.
This is so neat...I think I will try to make one with one of the large dog food bags we end up with here. I believe they are the same plasticized paper. The bags I take with me to the grocery are always waaaay to small! Thanks Lindsay....btw....they do sell reasonably priced duct tape at Papermart, right?....sigh....I am learning to LOVE this place way more than is good for my wallet!!
At Art in the Park in our town, some moms made these type of bags and sold them to help raise money for the 4-H Club. The moms had access to many different types of feed bags including rabbit pellets, chicken feed, goat and sheep feed. The only difference was they sewed with sewing machines instead of using duck tape. They were a great fund raiser.
Yes! Great idea!!! As a former 4h leader it could be a great project to have the club members man the selling of them ! How much did they price the bags #if you will excuse my asking? Thanks ~laur!
I love recycling ideas Lindsay and i would love to see more.....Just not crazy about this one...the duct tape puts it a little on the tacky side for me. Not sure those handles would last long either with duct tape. Hugs! deb
Hi quick question, about how much weight does this hold up to Just curious, I know it would not be anything overlly heavy but things like crafts to be transported would be ok or childrens toys. Thank You for sharing, Dot
I was wondering about how sturdy the handles were? I make these bags but I sew them. Does the duct tape hold and for how long? Thanks for a new spin on making these bags!
I love the idea of it being so easy... But do the straps hold the weight of say, groceries? Please let me know. I may just sew some instead as much as I don't want to lol!
I had neighbors thinking I was crazy…front yard washing empty dog food bags with Dawn and the hose. We have large bags and large dogs. Is there an easier way? How do you let them dry? It’s hot here in TX but the bags fly away sometimes.
Nice to see another good recycling idea. I've been thinking this type bag would make a good light-duty tarp if a bunch of them were saved then opened into flat panels and taped together. What do you think?
I love re-purposing items and this one rocks! Keeps them out of the landfill. I have a question off topic....Have you ever heard of Dr PH Martins Hydrus water colors? I just saw a video on Kristina Werners site I you wanted to check it out. I am interested in your thoughts on these. Any chance you are able to do a review or something? Love ALL your videos and appreciate the time and effort you put into them. I still faithfully watch all the ADs right thru' to the end. Hugs
Life Lesson #9,095,753 ... NEVER use dog or cat food bags without washing with soap and water first! The oils tend to become rancid! Feed, cracked corn, etc. are the winners! For rigidity, I add a fitted piece of styrofoam panel to the bottom! "Carry" On!
I just tested the one I just made with two big rocks and a iron dog door stop (about 20-25 lbs.). Slung it around a little, gave it a few jerks up and down--still intact! I also put my big foot in it and pulled on the straps a couple of good ones. A-ok! My "egg people" LOVE these bags. They can carry six to eight dozen eggs with no problem at all. Thanks, Miss Lindsay!
Hmmm now you have me thinking. My mom reminisces about wearing "feed sac dresses" so now I'm wondering if they make those sort of cute feed sacs anymore...
One word of caution. While the bag can be cleaned so that us weak-nosed humans can no longer detect the smell of the previous contents, don't bet on your dog not being able to detect it. The challenge then is to see how many times you get to use the bag before Rover de Fido decides that you intended for this to be a chew toy.
Staple the handles to the bag 5 or 6 times at each end then cover with a piece of duct tape.
That was my thought when I saw her just taping the handles to the bag. This method seems so much faster than the sewing method.
@@MC-tg1xk agreed, simple easy, love it but when I need a bag chances are it's gonna have some weight in it 😄
Ooomg I've gone through so many feed bags over the years and never once thought of doing something this adorable with them! I have found that I have been charged for cat food when the bag crossed the scanned in the store. Just using a sharpie to block out the UPC
oh no! Never would have thought of that! Great tip!
Made sure to empty the grain bag with out damaging it this am. Going to make this for my sons bday coming up...he adores his chickens! :) Thanks for a great easy tutorial!
what a fun project! that extra piece you saved for another project would make an adorable pocket on the inside
I have NEVER commented on a video but this is definitely worth it!!! I have made the sewn version of these, but needed to use upholstery thread for strength - which gave my sewing machine horrible trouble!!

Yay for you! These good ideas keep our land and oceans just a bit cleaner, and a few bucks in our wallets! Thanks.

Absolutely LOVE your video. Straight to the point and super informative!!

I love your chickens Lindsay! Looks like you have different kinds this time. Love this idea! I have loads of bags of feed. Thanks for sharing.
Great idea 💡 👍 👏

as soon as my big cat bag is empty I will give it a try. love it! thank you for sharing.😄
Very creative and great way to reuse stuff you already have. I can just imagine using a big cat food bag as well. lol
Loving the Red Tape!
Hi Lindsay! I really liked how you did this bag so pretty! ❤️
Awesome and frugal! Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend. Mable
Lindsay You're so cool. crafty & frugal! Thanks for sharing. cute chickens. :)
Love it! I'm going to make one with a 40 LB. bird seed bag!

I'm going to make one from my Purina Cat Chow bag and my BIG bag of birdseed!
Cute bag, and I like seeing your pretty chickens!
My sister and I make these. They are great at craft fairs.
looks totally awesome!! I'm adding this to my must try list.. x
you can ask your local grainery for free bags my feed mill gives me free ones they are a bit dusty but I just wipe them clean :)

what i thought as she cut the chickens head off :( poor chicken

thank you so much 😊 i appreciate that project which helped me to do the my project
Thankyou! Finally non-sew horray!
You’re welcome 😊
I wanna make one now!
I've been needing grocery bags. :)
love this, its such an awesome idea xx

Regular or industrial type sewing machine??? What type of needle?
Me You I just bought a regular machine and used the needle that came with it. It sews through most of the bags I’ve converted

+Sharon Wright I did a watercolor crayon chicken video a couple years ago:)
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I remember that! Maybe I'll go watch again. :)
This is SO neat :)
Great! Please, what is the material you have on your work surface that doesn't allow the duct tape to stick to it? Thanks
it is a fiskars cutting mat, they gray ones work great with duct tape, I got it years ago at walmart
I wish I had the chicken feed bag to make this, it sounds like fun...

It was a great idea. It was a few years ago so I had to look to refresh my memory of the price and see they were priced $12 - $15 dollars. Good luck.
I do the gusset on the inside of the bag, less tape on the outside, and the gusset keeps the shape of the bag better from the inside.
thanks for the tip:)
I love recycling ideas Lindsay and i would love to see more.....Just not crazy about this one...the duct tape puts it a little on the tacky side for me. Not sure those handles would last long either with duct tape. Hugs! deb
you could use the part you cut off to make handles

+Lori Hampton I don't know for how long, this is my first. I used Duck brand tape because it is stickiest.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thanks for your response and I am going to try it!
Can you make a beginner art supply video to suggest some good supplies for beginners or maybe even kids?
Using dig food bags. What is the tried and true way to clean the bags before creating. Food leaves a greasy feel after emptied.
I'd use dish soap, baking soda and peroxide. That should get grease and smells out.
I love the idea of it being so easy... But do the straps hold the weight of say, groceries? Please let me know. I may just sew some instead as much as I don't want to lol!

First time I've seen chickens in a backyard! First time I've seen a feed bag! Interesting project, but not something I would make or use.
She cut off the chicken's head!😲😂
How much weight can they safely carry without the straps coming loose ?
quite a bit, I've loaded it up many times, I'd say 25lbs but I am a wimp so maybe it is only 10lbs. I fill it with groceries cans included!

Where can I find grain bags? I don’t have any animals so..
I would have kept the chicken picture!
but but u now have a headless chicken on your bag but awesome way though :)
If you are going to use a box for a pattern for the bottom, why not just put the box back in for extra stability, especially for canned goods?
Not very practical for heavy items!!!
Awesome!
