It's a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar, probably the most beautiful caterpillar. There are only two host plants for it: Spice bush and sassasfras. Sassasfras grow wild, so I think it was mostly where it came from in your yard. I just discovered many of them in my sassasfras, in different stages of growth, each of the stages is called "instar".
This was hard to watch, to be honest... 😣Feel sorry for the hubs ....you did good feller.. don't worry , they are pretty durable . That was very sweet to share your find .
Your husband totally makes your videos!!!! Felt a little sorry for him today 😥! Glad to see you posted a video. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.😊
at first he was extremely annoying. but i bet he already saw what was comming "you pull the poison ivy out" "you keep these brambles back" "you bla bla" XD these 2 are great for eachother
What's the small shrub / tree at 8:25 right to the right of the huge tree trunk. This could be ptelea trifoliata (hop tree) which is a small tree / shrub that hosts giant swallowtails and also sometimes eastern tiger swallowtails, too. That looks like hop tree (the very small skinny multi-stemmed tree) to me. It's near your bed of coneflower, ferns, etc. right next to where you sat him down. He may have been feeding on that if it's truly hop tree. Hop tree is kinda one of those trees that fades into the background sometimes, but it is a host plant. :) Hope that helps.
My heart went out your husband, not too many men would have put up with the serve you gave him. He truly contributes heaps to these videos. Feelings do get hurt.
Your videos are the absolute best! I love the fact that they’re not only informative, but they’re also entertaining. Love the fact that they’re not scripted and some of them aren’t planned. Thanks for keeping it real!
Just so you know, I get you guys humor. I am from NYC and we go at it and the next sentence we are laughing it up. That was an awesome find!! Thanks for sharing and Happy Thanksgiving!!😝
You know I've been watching this lady and her husband for about 2 weeks now and This little lady is awesome you're a very lucky man to have her Incredible knowledge in the world of gardening and plants
My reaction would of been the same as yours. I would of been so excited 😆. I have never seen one and would be doing a happy dance too! Give your hubby some love ❤️ for finding it.
Well… I was so surprised and happy to see that you had posted a video, and I just can’t believe that you are lucky enough to have that swallowtail caterpillar in your garden! I have only seen them in pictures! Could you please give the name of your plant identification app? We have a lot of trees and bushes on our property up the road, and I want to check and see if we have any of the spice bushes. I’d probably jump for joy if I ever found one of those caterpillars. Thanks so much for sharing. I’ll watch your Facebook page to see if you post any of the caterpillar pics.
Its so odd, we have those butterflies all the time... they are probably the most common here so its really surprising that I havent found one sooner! Happy Thanksgiving MK!
Great video ... very entertaining ..... So glad that your Husband didn't throw the camera on the ground and walk away ... he hung in there and got a great video ..... Thanks for sharing .... Hugs
22:00 I think the tree that you think is buckthorn is actually hop tree and Hop tree kind of looks like poison ivy, but it's not. :) I think that tiny tree is what he was eating.
Bittersweet is a nightmare! It’s everywhere on my road, zone 5b. Very invasive. Very destructive. I walk the road with Falcos in hand to snip it or go back to the house for the loppers. Beware. What plant ID app do you use? Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Sir you were more than civil and forthcoming to this person who obviously, was either looking for a fight or a date…..I for one would have responded once and, after her continuing to carry on, would have walked away
Thank you for showing us the caterpillar. We have never seen one like that. Sadly, our bluebirds eat all of our black swallow caterpillars on our dill.
I can so relate. Lol, as far as the plant being pulled up. My spouse has done that a lot. Its a joke between us now. One time she had her hand around a small Lavender plant and she was pulling weeds and I said "Lisa, that's a plant.." And she got all defensive and said I know! She said she had her hand around it to protect it. Later on of course there was a hole where the Lavender plant was. Lol She was like "oops..." Funny video today and still was informative as usual! Happy Thanksgiving from Janet in Southern Maine.
Wondering when you shot this video. You are wearing a tee shirt and things are still growing in your yard! I'm in MA zone 6 and my garden has been put to bed for a while due to freezes. BTW, love your videos.
Hahaha. you two are perfect together. We had three Sphinx moth Caterpillars this year (huge) feasting on our Virginia Creeper..... in the dog's pen... We had a hard job keeping them safe in there..... the dog didn't get them, we are praying they made it to their next phase without the birds getting them.
Hey Linda! Thanks for the comment! I use ‘Picture This’ App. It’s pretty accurate but doesn’t identify specific varieties of things just gives a broader ID. 😊 Happy Thanksgiving to you and your husband!
Happy Thanksgiving-to you and your wonderful good Egg Hubs! The video was kind of entertaining re the caterpillar, so darn cute in fact!! I hope you gave your sweet hubs a great big huge for finding that cute caterpillar which has sparked your new interest of naturalization of a dedicated butterfly area for next year!! 👍👍🐛🦋
Doesn’t marriage look like fun? The app “Seek,” is great for identifying plant, insect, and animal life, and it’s free. It was developed by National Geographic and California Academy of Sciences and it’s FREE! I have been able to identify many host plants, trees, and caterpillars. The favorite host plant I have found is the Sassafras tree for that cat.
Oh please! I feel like I’m gardening at home, too much but I will keep watching. I video the caterpillars I find but I’ve not found the chrysalis. We need more education and buy a butterfly zippered tent for the house to collect caterpillars and feed until they develop!
Ah, your hubby was only trying to surprise you! He is a good guy and totally makes your videos fun. Isn’t it cold where you live? You have short sleeves on. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Yes! This was a video we shot a few months back! We have some videos we did and haven’t released so we can sporadically add them over the winter. Right now we’re beginning to hunker down for the winter, everything is really sad and bland here 🥲 Happy Thanksgiving!
Watch s&k wildlife rescue he talks about all butterflies! Spice bush is a host plant! Cool! I think he curls up in a spice bush leave and makes a cocoon.
You are correct. After reading your comment, I took a second look and you are correct. Unfortunately, pics of this caterpillar are all over the internet with wrong titles so Im learning to be a tad more diligent. Thanks for the comment and correction!
Came upon your video, and I really couldn't believe how you kept on and on to your husband reprimanding him, my goodness not cool lady. Please be more sympathetic to his feelings, I think he took all your bad-mouthing him really really well. Anyways great find!!!!!
this guy is not helping his case. "i moved him so you could see him" the point is that she would rather not see it than you move it just for her. it's harmfull for the creature is my understanding from her reaction. even getting annoyed and calling her ungratefull. yuk. and she is even trying to not attack him. to not show being annoyed. by just getting into the whole subject of the catterpillar. and "isn't that cool though" the guy is so freaking obnoxious. even though my oppinion on catterpillars is the same as him. she is just trying to teach you things you obviously don't know. and you're acting like a total dirtbag to it. unless this is you trying to be funny. and she understands that. but man this video made my blood boil.
unsubscribing who cares about that caterpillar, your husband was trying to surprise you and make a good video!no need to shame him and in front of the kids too. No big deal jeez!

Yeah, not one of my best moments lol. I felt bad too watching that back... Im glad he did what he did, though it was so fun to see it!
Your husband totally makes your videos!!!! Felt a little sorry for him today 😥! Glad to see you posted a video. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.😊
I agree!! I def was a little hard on him but hes a tough guy! ;-) He tolerates my moments well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
at first he was extremely annoying. but i bet he already saw what was comming
"you pull the poison ivy out"
"you keep these brambles back"
"you bla bla"
XD
these 2 are great for eachother
I just came across your video while searching host plants for swallowtail butterfly. I can't stop laughing! 😂😅😅😂😂 😂😂😂
Welcome to the craziness! 😂😊

Just in case you don't know by now: Your caterpillar was a Spicebush Swallowtail - not an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Happy gardening! 🌻
My heart went out your husband, not too many men would have put up with the serve you gave him. He truly contributes heaps to these videos. Feelings do get hurt.
I agree totally
Your videos are the absolute best! I love the fact that they’re not only informative, but they’re also entertaining. Love the fact that they’re not scripted and some of them aren’t planned. Thanks for keeping it real!
You two are hilarious 😂 love it! Great find Bud 👌🙌
Oh, so you found spicebushes! That makes sense, too. so cool :)
You two crack me up !! Love how you are just you, no acting for the camera !! Found one of those years ago and thought it was so cute !!
that spicebush kinda looks like sassafras. could be that.
I love how real your videos are. Thank you as always for sharing. I always look forward to them
Thank you 😊
I learned this year that caterpillars will travel far from host plant looking for a safe place to begin their chrysalis,
You and your hubby are funny to watch - love your videos! 😃
My reaction would of been the same as yours. I would of been so excited 😆. I have never seen one and would be doing a happy dance too! Give your hubby some love ❤️ for finding it.
I definitely did! I know a one track kind about moving it at first but I was totally psyched and thankful! He knows 😉
Awww... Hubs tried. He's very patient and he meant well for you. 🙏
I know he did... I was a bit harsh toward his staging the scene but hes a good egg.... he knows me and tolerates me well haha.
Thanks for a great laugh. Luv you guys!
I love you gardens and I'm crazy about caterpillars and butterflies too haha! I'm wondering what plant ID app you use? Thank you so much!
I use ‘Picture This’ primarily and ‘Seek’ from iNaturalist as a backup. ❤️
Awesome video ❤️❤️🌷🌷
Thank you 😊
Adults also eat butterfly bush, milkweed, Japanese honeysuckle, phlox, lilac, and ironweed. Hope that helps 😊
30:55 white wood aster is a great plant :)
Pull off a leaf from the spicebush and crush it you can smell a strong spicy aroma.

Did you find out the name of the plant identifier app?
The app is called “Picture This” 😊
Thanks.
That's the coolest looking caterpillar!
It is amazing!
Great video ... very entertaining ..... So glad that your Husband didn't throw the camera on the ground and walk away ... he hung in there and got a great video ..... Thanks for sharing .... Hugs
Haha! Me too! He tolerates me well in my moments 😉 He really is the best ❤️ Happy Thanksgiving!

PS. I love your enthusiasm about the caterpillar and the plants. Its infectious and reminds me of myself! Lol
I meant S&K Wildflower Rescue. On RUclips. He has so many wildflowers and host plants for the butterflies!🦋🦋🦋🦋🌸🌸🌸🌼🌼🌼😊💖👍👋
Will do!
Is anyone listening....NO!! 😂 Forgive her, she's a nature protector.
Yes! Haha although I could’ve dropped the one track mind and enjoyed it a little more during the video. It really was amazing!
Do catapillars have crotches? 😂 I never heard an answer 😂
Ha! 😂
Feel bad for the hubby but this was hella funny.
you guys are hysterical
😃😃😃
Wondering when you shot this video. You are wearing a tee shirt and things are still growing in your yard! I'm in MA zone 6 and my garden has been put to bed for a while due to freezes. BTW, love your videos.
10:17... "nobody eats those." I beg to differ as Goldfinches visit mine and eat them.
Yes, they do… I meant with regard to caterpillars 😉
Hahaha. you two are perfect together. We had three Sphinx moth Caterpillars this year (huge) feasting on our Virginia Creeper..... in the dog's pen... Very cool caterpillar! You guys crack me up, caterpillar crotch. 😆 what plant app do you use? Mine doesn't seem to be accurate.
Happy Thanksgiving

Oh yes! He got much deserved credit! I should’ve let it go quicker and enjoyed it a little more during the video but it really was amazing!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I’m just like you and I totally get you!!!!
Cool You Inly Just Begun!!! Me too!!!🦋🦋🌸🦋🌸🦋🌸🦋🌸😊💖👍👋🦋
Thanks!
Your husband is a funny n a joker too. Sometime he irrate u but he still praise u. Thanks for the video.
He is a great husband and yes- he loves to irritate me but I wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

Yes! I am going to do more collecting next year- that is a goal of mine. I have never found chrysalises either! I've hunted for them too!
Right now we’re beginning to hunker down for the winter, everything is really sad and bland here 🥲

Watch s&k wildlife rescue he talks about all butterflies! Spice bush is a host plant! Cool! I think he curls up in a spice bush leave and makes a cocoon.
Cool! I can’t wait to find one! I have yet to do so!
Never seen one of those caterpillars before.
Oddly me either and it’s a very common butterfly here! It’s very exciting!
Pretty cool, sorry you were ripped a new one, live and learn as they say. 😏 🦋
Sorry you were upset but my husband and I thought this was hysterical.
There was a lot of humor in this, thanks for the comment!
You both are sooo funny… Your husband cannot turn every leaf before raking, shit happens.
Haha I know- I was a bit hard on him. He tolerates me well. He’s the best ❤️
What app do you use to ID plants?
Hey Lori! I use ‘Picture This’ App. It pretty accurate and reliable but not necessarily specific to cultivars.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Bittersweet is very invasive and very hard to erradicate!
WHO'S THAT POKÈMON!!
That's a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar.
You are correct. After reading your comment, I took a second look and you are correct. Unfortunately, pics of this caterpillar are all over the internet with wrong titles so Im learning to be a tad more diligent. Thanks for the comment and correction!
REALLY LET IT GO MY GOODNESS
They feast on fettle and dill.
I spot poison ivy!
You are adorable 😘. Your hubby is not🥴
Came upon your video, and I really couldn't believe how you kept on and on to your husband reprimanding him, my goodness not cool lady. Please be more sympathetic to his feelings, I think he took all your bad-mouthing him really really well. Anyways great find!!!!!
She is just rude.
this guy is not helping his case.
"i moved him so you could see him"
the point is that she would rather not see it than you move it just for her.
it's harmfull for the creature is my understanding from her reaction.
even getting annoyed and calling her ungratefull.
yuk.
and she is even trying to not attack him. to not show being annoyed. by just getting into the whole subject of the catterpillar. and "isn't that cool though"
the guy is so freaking obnoxious. even though my oppinion on catterpillars is the same as him.
she is just trying to teach you things you obviously don't know. and you're acting like a total dirtbag to it.
unless this is you trying to be funny. and she understands that. but man this video made my blood boil.
Sorry to say, This is not funny. you could of went along with it and expressed your disappointment later. cheers
It was real life. Sometimes that’s nice to see.
I love their "realness"
Agree…couldn’t watch the whole video. Excessive, and not funny..
unsubscribing who cares about that caterpillar, your husband was trying to surprise you and make a good video!no need to shame him and in front of the kids too. No big deal jeez!
could she whine and be anymore of a pain ? my goodness
