It took me so long to write my first 5 min set and then after performing it a few times I realised I needed to slow down. Turns out I had written way more than 5 min.
Yep, absolutely the same story with myself. I started talking shows on the street and back then didn't use an amplifier. Just screamed... Very fast. Nobody could understand me. Wasn't until I watched a recording of my performance when I till I realised how bad it was. Took me ages to remind myself to slow down, really stood to me when I started focusing on it.
Great video Gary. I mostly connected with the part about "the message", the first point at the start. It's not something I've thought a great deal about but I think by thinking about it I'll be able to generate more and better material, united under the same umbrella.
Thanks for commenting. Absolutely. That little technique really helps me out, even outside of writing just before performing a show. Asking myself
1. How my overall character is feeling
2. What specifically is it I want to get form the audience.
Even if I don't smash the gig I nearly always start the right way with my focus correct. Certainly helps on days when I've other things in my mind besides performing.

Had a rehearsal last night, first time since October. Wasn't great as lost confidence in my old jokes and new jokes I've written since didn't seem very good. I understand this happens to a lot of comedians, so I'm hoping next time it feels better and by mid May I'll be over it when shows start again.
Next time will be better. There is always going to be some adjusting needed after so long away from it. Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll start to gain momentum again in no time.

May I offer some constructive critique on the video though? While I think your camera quality as well as lighting are on point and the sound quality is bearable I feel that you could benefit from a more interesting backdrop. Other than that I really enjoy the content you produce and will be staying an active subscriber!

Many thanks for commenting. I couldn't agree with you more. Crazy but this is the last video with that back drop for a while. Also I'm givong another mic a tryout today. I'm limited to what can be done as I'm recording all these episodes in a very small room on my boat. I've created something different for the next few videos. Will be out soon.

Haha, I've certainly not planned to get that far. I didn't even plan to have 1k followers till at least the first year. I'm thrilled with how quick the channel has grown in 8 months. I certainly do plan on replying to everyone who takes the time to comment on a video. I view this channel as a community. By commenting and trying to help people out is forcing me to think about the basics in ways that work best...therefore making me a better comic. Or perhaps I'll turn into an idiot wearing sunglasses indoors and demanding a rider at open mic gigs. Time will tell.
