      You really have to research what game you want to go beforehand.
      I once ended up in the middle of ultras after a game. Fuck did i know a game was at that day. Or whether their team won or lost. I was just a student catching a train back home.
      Whole train sation was like a warzone. Near impossible to escape. Armed police everywhere. Later i learned it was a game with insane tension.
      Two rivaling clubs from neighbouring towns. --> no long journey ergo all fans there
      One of the two clubs was about to descend one liga. So it was an very important game.
      And some punishment for one of the clubs had just ran out, so all fans were allowed.
      Well the train station was full of police in full riot gear. And i had a backpack, which made me suspicious.

    05:53 "THE flag" is treated as military flags are treated. If it gets stolen the unit disbands. Do not confuse THE flag with the rest of the flags.
    "They" always try to steal THE flag from each other. THE flag is carried by several dozens decoys to the stadium and fights are fought for it. This happens every single game. It is worse when there are derbies.

    It's for your (part of the) city, pride, unrelenting unconditional love. From grandfather to grandkids, it's our colors, our history, trough heavy defeats and relegation, to promotion and victory. Teams that haven't been successful in 20yrs still pull full stadiums.
    Also, some of these Ultras were incorporated in the armies of the Balkan wars. Recognisable from their training suit pants, sneakers and army jackets. It goes even further; in Russia hooligans train multiple combat styles to go meet rivals, in even fights.
    And get this...also some women fight eachother. That's how fast it goes.

    I'm British and I view the European passion for football as something very tribal. A millennium of conflict, rivalry and national (& regional) pride channelled into sport instead of constant war. In an ever increasingly connected technological world, its one of the few remaining occasions that can socially level and unite a town or country behind a common cause, no matter who you are :)
    Oh, and the different coloured fire is flares, and usually there will be a separation in sections for families etc to sit in, and the ultras tend to respect those boundaries :)

    • @juliansanchezharris5773
      @juliansanchezharris5773 Год назад +2

      Indeed. Football is Europes exchange for wars between countries and regions like back in the days. An outlet to feel the rivalry, feel the belonging, feel the pride in where you're from. Feel the primal needs satisfied.

    My most impressive Ultra moment was during a foggy winter night in Rotterdam. No light in the street, not a person in sight but... You could hear thousands screaming AS ONE VOICE! " ROTTERDAM HOOLIGANS! ROTTERDAM HOOLIGANS! ROTTERDAM HOOLIGANS! ROTTERDAM HOOLIGANS! " That was so eerie. I still got the chills 20 years later.

    Here in Belgium, it was very rough in the '80s and '90s. First match in the first division that I attended I saw one guy punching a horse just to be agressive, people kicked of the stairs of the stadium, etc. We went with a bus to Antwerp stadion, the driver said he was more nervous there than in the former Yugoslavia where they just had armed conflict.
    Quite impressing sometimes, to go with a bus to away games with your own lower league club, and suddenly being escorted with 10 coaches from the road because they think you are going to a high risk game. Then, you have to go buy a soft drink with special police units, because otherwise the store would be robbed by the whole group...

  • @quinten1978
    @quinten1978 2 года назад +13

    Gentlemen, let me start by saying it's great to see a dad and his son do this together! About the video, this 'type of behavior' is a lot deeper than just support for a footballclub. It's, rather summarized, about the city. About the neighborhood. About the (religious) background. The form in which this is proliferated and evolved is sport, mostly football. But the intense, obsessive way to support your club (and with that your province, city, neighborhood, religious background) and even saying you will kill and die for that club has a deeper history. Combine that with the modern ways of raising kids, more specific boys (sit still and color within the lines, certainly don't run around and throw with things, as a first method of testing materials you might be building infrastructure with later, no no no, just sit still and 'behave') and this display of excessive behavior can be explained and understood a little better. Greetings from the Netherlands, where fans threw burning projectiles on the pitch as recent as yesterday... ;)

  • @sebmcclane
    @sebmcclane 2 года назад +2

    Usually the fans on those videos are from football clubs. A lots of them are Greek Team and they are apsolute animals. Panathinaikos club are on Gate 13 and Olympiakos are Gate 7 (opposide) ! When those two play against each other outside the stadium is a battlefield literaly. But if someone less fanatic wants to go on a game they are sitting on differend gates so its more family friendly.. still those clubs make so much noice so in the end literaly everyone is chanting and joining in ! Super good fun.

  • @jake_wilkinson
    @jake_wilkinson 2 года назад +3

    Another reason for the difference in passion is the club has a traditional location that they will never move from and most of the iconic clubs have 100 old stadiums.
    No team would ever move city like NFL teams do as there would be complete uproar.
    I think being a world sport is also key as the national team in England/Scotland/Wales is ridiculously supported the whole country stops which fosters interest in the sports whereas the main 3 US sports are fairly limited to US and a handful other countries.

    I'm German. I think the reason is that Europe has always been at war with each other and taking land from each other. That is why there is a great love of home in Europe. I only watch football on TV and I'm not a hooligan, but if I was in a game from my home country, drank a lot of alcohol and our rivals insult us all the time, I think I would attack the others with my team because it's feels like they're belittling our homeland and finding their homeland better than ours. I know this sounds ridiculous, but imagine if we were to slander your homeland, your origins and everything you stand for all the time. We hate each other but when it comes to our homeland we are all united and fighting side by side.

    I live in Europe and I have attended these games. The fans are like a gang. It's all about the club. It's usually the big clubs that have the most fans. Every European country has like 5 or 6 big clubs that are always contending for a championship. It's not like in the states were any club can be a champion. In Europe its about 5 or 6 clubs. And the clubs have all sports. The same fans who support their club go to soccer games, basketball games, volleyball games even women's volleyball games. The clubs have club houses were fans go and hang out. There are chants, and bombs and even weapons. In the past rival fans would meet somewhere and fight...there were stabbings, people getting shot, now the police are very strict and it has somewhat the fighting has stopped. In these games the atmosphere is terrifying, your legs go numb. There are no kids, families attending. No opposing fans attend. Its something that you gotta see up close. This would never happen in the US.

    The resistance against the police thing is always regional. But many of these countries have a big problem with police violence and control as well as very marginalizing and repressive autocratic governments. They are not only cracking down on personal life and freedom, as well as social programs in their country, but also on football fans. organizing yourself as ultras oftentimes is the only way for you to find solidarity, lik-minded people, a support network as well as express some of the remaining freedom you have or your political will. That's why clashes with the police happen more frequently in eastern europe than western europe.

    it wasnt germany its greece the most hardcore football fans comes from the balkan
    p.s. some hardcore fans(more like assholes killed a 21 year old man cause he was different team
    he was chilling outside of his home with some friends 2 cars stopped saw him wearing another teams shirt and they shank him to death

      To be fair, the absolute state of our fucked up countries in Balkans allows fans to be more wild, and have our own 80s England state of affairs, but I don't think Germans, Dutch, French...not to mention Brits are any less hardcore.

      @@jovanjorgovan23 yeah can atleast vouch that ultras/hooling deaths due violence are somewhat common throughout most of Europe, not only Balkan.
      AFCA Amsterdam also was shown here on multiple occasions and that's a fact.
      But probably in the Balkans the amount of clubs that have Ultras is higher.
      In the rest of Europe it's more like 5-10 clubs per country that have such Ultras, so maybe that's less than in Balkans?
      Percentage wise.

    If you only looked at the good of ultras they would be amazing, but for me all the violence especially ruins it. Should not require riot police to have a gameday.
