I'm team sapphire, for pretty much the exact reasons you said here. Were I to ever find myself in a situation where zero-g sapphire shards may be a problem, then I'd definitely take the Hesalite. That will never happen, so I'll gladly take the extra scratch resistance and beautiful display caseback of the sapphire crystal. Considering the immense historical significance of the Hesalite model, I'm very glad Omega still offers it, especially if someone wants a Speedy Pro entirely due to it being "the moon watch", but that's not the only reason I like the Speedy, so it doesn't affect my decision.
Yea, it’s definitely a plus that Omega offers both versions as people buy for different reasons and it’s good that they have option to choose according to those reasons. Same as u I prefer to have a watch that is more scratch resistant so sapphire for me..that being said both a beautiful timepieces 😊
I do know that if it really happens that people need to go to space with their Speedmaster, just let a watch smith know and he or she can swap it out for you.
Ooooooo well this is once again a great video!!! I take you to my cheap Seagull 1963 with the exhibition case back! Sometimes I’ve lost days just staring into it! Looked down to it in May, looked back up it was June!!!!! If I pay for an Omega SM and have the chance to see an Omega movement in action without taking off the case back................. got to be S A S A S A S A SAPHIRE!!!!!!!!! All the best from still sunny southern England!

I went sapphire as well, but agree, you really can’t go wrong. In the end, I just wanted the view of the movement and wanted to buy new, so didn’t opt for the late 90’s model with sapphire caseback and hesilite top. Keep it up man! Great video!!
Hesalyte fan here. Just can’t have sapphire fragments floating around the spacecraft. I wear it every day on the comfortable lizard deployant which is a better fit on my 6.75” wrist. I also bought the stock bracelet and will in time give all the Omega straps a try. Strapie and Everest offer rubber straps with curved ends to go flush with the case. Decisive for me was the smoothly rounded Hesalyte with it’s native optical character. It completes the quartet of mid-20th century visual cues when matched with streamlined lyre lugs & crown guards, the cantilevered bezel, and the exquisitely understated perfectly legible white on dark matte gray dial. These ideas span the transition from art deco to the space age into which I was born in ‘54. In a thousand years our descendants will see that scratched Hesalyte in the museum from the first steps beyond earth. Meanwhile Polywatch makes it a pleasant ritual to keep my crystal pristine.

Team Hesalite :-) I was set on getting the 3861 sapphire but when put side by side with the hesalite I immediately went for the hesalite. There is no contest look wise IMO. The markers on the hesalite appear to be longer than on the sapphire due to the distortion effect and the dial looks larger and cleaner without the halo. Need to ask in the Omega Boutique if one can get the see through case back for the hesalite version.

To be honest I chose the sapphire over the hesalite. I have the FOIS and man it is a scratch and ding magnet. For those who want to go to space and meet NASA qualification, sure, why not? But please keep in mind that most of us will be down to Earth and will face more issues with the hesalite versions.
I went sapphire speedmaster pro. If I ever need to be worried about shards of glass interfering with my spaceship, I will wear my G-Shock or Maraton tactical watch...lol
Hesalite is clearly the most beautiful iteration. Sapphire is nice, but just doesnt look as beautiful dial side. I actually bought the sapphire first, but after a while I couldnt stand how ugly it looked dialside compared to the hesalite. I told me self its more durable, but quite frankly that didnt matter as I wasnt careless with it anyways. So i purchased a hesalite sandwich instead...basically a sapphire sandwich but the dial crystal is hesalite. Best version of all in my opinion. Better then the standard hesa and better than the sapphire sandwich
