- Up and coming Saskatchewan songwriter Colter Wall stopped by recently to pay us a visit. Looking for something with an antique flavor, Wall borrowed this killer 1937 Martin 00-17 for his show that evening at City Winery with Billy Joe Shaver.
Colter Wall is a young Saskatchewan born songwriter and performing musician. Steeped in Old Timey material and traditional Americana, Wall's sound is comprised of resonate and raw baritone vocals, Folk and Bluegrass style guitar and banjo picking, steady kick-drum stomping, and visually provoking, story telling lyrics. Wall Draws influence from legends of the past such as Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, and The Band, as well as more modern Americana pioneers including Shovels and Rope, Jack White, Ray Lamontagne, and Shakey Graves. Despite only recently beginning his musical career, Colter Wall has been seen in the company of Saskatchewan's infamous gritty bluegrass trailblazers,The Dead South. Wall has had the opportunity to open for The Dead South on several occasions with more show's upcoming. In addition to racking up memorable live shows across the province, Wall is planning on releasing an EP in the summer of 2015 and has been busy recording at Regina's own Studio One. From dive bars to fundraiser galas, Colter Wall has a history of leaving audiences in shock at the maturity of his voice as well as his songwriting. His style of playing took to the Martin like a bird to the wind. Check out this impromptu, one take/one mic performance of his new track "Motorcycle"

I met a British guy at a party in Massachusetts who told me about Colter Wall. Good music doesn't have borders
Pop another 💊 and hop another train
And Colter's Canadian! Music is global
He’s from Saskatchewan just like Joni Mitchell 😎
Well I'm from Venezuela where people is used to listen to trash music like regueton and trap however I am very grateful I got to find Colter. My favorite singer-songwriter alongside blues artists Shawn James and the white buffalo
@@herrmiseria I am from mexico dindn think someone from Latam hear colter wall
Hope you are doin find mate
My favorite Canadian!! I jam this on my Harley while driving windy Alaskan mountain roads!!
Now this, my friends is great country/folk music.
I often cringe when I hear the "pop" produced junk for the masses.
But this guy, Colter is the real deal.
Truly
Just recently discovered this fella and I'm already a big fan. Really beats the shit out of those strings. You can tell his pickin a mile off.
Thank God I'm a country boy.....
If this is the future of Country music. Bring it on. This is the new Johnny Cash.
A voice that sounds like an old country gravel road. All worn down and smooth.
This kid is the second coming. I listen to both of his albums almost every day
Nope
The second coming of what?
He looks like Waylon Jennings here and sounds like Johnny Cash! I love it!
so happy to learn that there are real folk songwriters out there still
Kevtron9000 check out lost dog street band. Good stuff.
Why isn't anyone talking about this guys song writing ability? This is a fun song of his, but seriously. He's an amazing writer. And most of his songs are story telling. Its more folk than country but his sound leans him in the country direction. Fuck he's talented.
Luke Mcwilliams Steve Earle is talking about him, that’s how I got here.
Coulter wall will be a miracle to me for ever... His voice is adorable!!!!
Song never gets old. Probably my favorite
He'll do just fine.
unbelievable.....from never heard of him to one of my favorites ever in the space of a few hours.
I love the Arlo Guthrie reference.
Thanks for featuring him. Really dig his music and didn't know about him before.
I can't lie, I listen to the pop country stuff sometimes, but I always get drawn back to the real stuff
Incredible......has been stuck in my head for a week.....keep going back to listen again.
He doesn't pick and grin... he picks and wins.. amazing voice
What a voice!
Old arlo dont want a pickle
Wall is just ahead of his years with his lyrics. What a talent the young pard is.
I'm going to see this guy tonight at the Gothic! He's definitely my favorite up and coming artist right now.
I said "fuck" out loud when I heard the guitar
Yousif Abuhamad me too. thought it was Townes comin thru for a sec
Unreal sound. Those pre-war Martins are something else; They cannot be duplicated.
Like Sturgill Simpson says, "Old stuff sounds better!"
Jim Daniel Well Sturgill is one of the best he would know better then the rest of us.
I just figured out the motorcycle reference and the phrase "ride it off a mountain like ol Arlo".....
Arlo Guthrie motorcycle song. "I don't want a pickle.....I just wanna ride on my motor-sickle"...now...to decifer the rest.
Thanks. Was wonderin’
Thunderbird wine is a reference to a couple old singers that have mentioned it in their songs, Townes Van Zandt is one I can think of think the song is called me and big dave.
i like this set alot.
This here is one smooth cat! like his blues more than the country vibes though
I love it!!!! What a deep voice! Love from France.
Fabulous! Amazing! 😄😄
King of acoustic!!!!! Colter wall is a star
WOW! Love that voice!
Your Fuggin Awesome Man
Johnny Cash would be more than proud of this guy. There are incredible country singers, and then there are the few like Colter and Cash and Waylon
this guy is awesome! Johnny cash is alive in colter wall
It's like... Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt had a kid and this bit of perfection popped out
thank God I'm a country boy.
TheBoowaka he’s Canadian
@@undergroundwalkerisback922 Country is more than your nation. Not to mention he's a cattle rancher
Cool song, Badass guitar
Love it
He's the real deal.
Awe...wait for it...some!!!

Where has this guy been working? A big add to my music list. Between his talented voice and picking on that wonderful old guitar, darn...
Love me some Colter..
Thats good stuff
Great!
another great video, keep it going.
Love
Nice!
From my hometown Swift Current,Saskatchewan,Canada
dudes fuckin awesome
Damn it man...the kid is good.
Yes Blaze Foley exactly! After all Colter was heavily influenced by the very best songwriter ever The Late Great Townes Van Zandt
should have way more views
The tune reminds me of Oo De Lally from Disney's Animated Robin Hood film.
Needs to visit Australia
Zoom out every time I try to get a close up of the funny D chord...
A bit late but it’s got the thumb in the bass on the G# (F# w/o capo) so it’s an E/G# (or capoless D/F#) and it appears he plays a hammer on and ignores the high E string G# (F#)
Just found out this guy is Canadian. Wicked.
does this remind anyone else of blaze foley?
Kyle Jones... blaze foley hell yes brother!!
The next Johnny cash.
thank god i'm a country boy, it's the same melody.
Done it! Won’t let me post pics lol
...thank god I'm a country boy
What kind of strings work with that dog ear pickup?
chicagomusicexchange
unplugged but you can see the pickups on the acoustic as well as the fucking mic
He's Canadian
Will someone fix the action on that top E string?!
I love this guy's sound and voice.
D Loseth dropped D
please DONT 'fix' anything about that E string.
ugh tabs please
Grrrrrrrr.............eat!!! Those poor little 'dislikers' wont eat their vegetables either; Mummy says! Awh shucks! Don't ya just feel a little pity for them (?).
Anyone any idea what the line "Pour it on the pavement like you would a tombstone" means? I have a feeling its some kind of reference but I'm not getting it.
Figured it has to do with the tradition of pouring out an alcoholic drink for the dead, by pouring it on the ground or the tombstone.
Faye M. Thanks. Its just kind of an awkward line that way right? Was kind of hoping something would explain the wierd phrasing.
"Follow my feet down to Music Row, pour it on the pavement like you would a tombstone." An old tradition is pouring a shot of alcohol on someone's grave as a sign of respect and remembrance. Music Row used to be full of great and honest musicians making real music. Now, its all filled with manufactured pop stars pretending to be country being told by record companies what to wear and what to sing. Music Row is dead so he's pouring out a shot like you would a tombstone.
Reminds me of thank God I'ma Country Boy John Denver a little bit
I hate country but I like this
So, did he buy a motorcycle?
Watermelon crawl beat lol
Eazy E influence
What kinda Martin guitar is he playin'?
a '37 00-17.
Says it in the beginning.
Does anyone else hear echoes of Thank God I’m a Country Boy?
Not a ripoff of that tune but I can hear the some of the same melody and cadence
when can i buy this song? lol
Dezerado it'll be on his new record coming out soon
its as good as bought
can anyone find lyrics for this?
Michael Sorenson
[Chorus]
Well, I figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
Wrap her pretty little frame around a telephone pole
Ride her off a mountain like old Arlo
Figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
[Verse 1]
Well, I figure I'll walk to the liquor store
Thunderbird, two bottles
Maybe three, maybe four
Follow my feet down the Music Row
Pour it on the pavement like you would a tombstone
Like you would a tombstone
Like you would a tombstone
Pour it on the pavement like you would a tombstone
[Verse 2]
Well, I figure I'm weary of feeling this way
Pop another pill, hop another train
Tell my brothers and my sisters that it's keeping me sane
Figure I'm weary of feeling this way
[Chorus]
Well, I figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
Wrap her pretty little frame around a telephone pole
Ride her off a mountain like old Arlo
Figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
Figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
Figure I'll buy me a motorcycle
Johnny Cash reincarnate
What kind of messed up mind gives this a thumbs down?
chords??
Kevtron9000 to me it seems to be G,C,D not particularly in that order the whole time but I think those are the chords he is using.
Jeremy D what tuning is he in, can you guess?
Eric Eckmann I thiiiink he usually has his guitar tuned to a full step down. ( D G C F A D ) but I learned his song "Livin' On the Sand" and I play it in standard tuning... just without a capo. But yeah from what I've seen he's usually a full step down from standard tuning

Bad voice caption... It's a crime!
