This is the definitive version of Kate McKannon. The tone and delivery are spot on. Other than maybe the album version, I haven't heard anything come close to this one...
The brewery sessions one has like 13 million views and is way better imo. Like this is fantastic but the Brewery Sessions one is legendary

It does, but it's only brought to widespread attention when manifested in the offspring of people with influence. Look up who this guy's father is.
I recently learned of Colter while riding in a big rig tow truck towing my Mack out of Iowa. Father and son tow truck drivers as country as country can be straight pipe jake braking 65 mph at every 30 mph sign and Colter cranked on the radio. Couldn’t have been a more fitting time to learn of this man.

I think the slower pace of this version and the album version gives the song so much more power and emotion. Being that all the other songs he sang on the brewery sessions were off his first ep I feel like Kate McCann wasn’t truly finalized when he did it for them.
Definitely not. This one is vastly superior.
I do enjoy this one more but I thought the solo bass drum he was using in the other one was pretty cool.

He also tends to tune a half step down and puts a capo on the second fret. To make the strings loose but keep regular tuning.

Completely different sound and style but the guitar work on Ren's "Tale of Jenny and Screech" is amazingly creative too. Both of these guys are master storytellers. Love it.

this is the best version
my favorite part of this song is the long stretches of guitar in between the vocals. really gives you the vibe of someone struggling to get through a difficult story. it's part of why this + the album version are my favorite - they're a little slower than other recordings, and i think having that time to absorb the buildup to the tragedy really sells it

No one cares less about loose string fret buzz than Colter. Love it.
Johnny Cash always had a lot of fret buzz, but I always loved how he never let it bother him.
This version is the best , slow low and sad suits the song.
Like others have said it's a bummer his voice has changed a bit with his newer stuff.

Been loving everything he’s put out over the years, and I’ve been able to see him perform in several different venues when he passes through Indianapolis. Guys like him, Tyler Childers, Drayton Farley, Vincent Neil Emerson, Charley Crockett, Sturgill Simpson, Nolan Taylor, and Jason Isbell are keeping things interesting these days!

Voice is so much clearer than Brewery Sessions.
In the Brewery Session he played the song with a capo on the third fret and automatically sings it a half step higher. In the normal KateMccannon video and in this video he plays the song with a capo on the second fret (half step lower). So he sings it lower. I like this version more than the Brewery Session version(But I like both).

I’ve seen people compare the brewery sessions to this and other live videos. I saw a comment that was the perfect way to describe brewery sessions vs others. This version seems like he is thinking back on what happened with Kate and is sad and potentially feels bad about it. The brewery sessions version feels more angry in the story telling. Both are fantastic!!

I've tried to look for him on npr and can't find it. On you tube, right? The links donald phect posted don't work either. Anyway, I like this version, I've seen other videos of him singing this song, and maybe they're a bit better. Maybe he was just having a bad day when this was filmed, you never know.

While I do like the song you mentioned, I still prefer this darker sound.
No such thing as a bad performance from Colter, but I think this song needs the energy of a mid-day brewery session to be at full performance potential - - I could listen to him sing anything, but this is low energy and missing the pacing that makes the brewery sessions recordings work so well. I understand he wanted to do it differently like artists tend to do, and it's good to have another version, but if you are showing someone this song for the first time I would avoid this one and give them the one that hooked me. He's in Manhattan and out of his element in this version- too much stuff to do there and he likely spent his energy chasing white lines and warping his mind while killing the time and just didn't know it, then it comes time to do a song and it's great but very very chilled.... maybe too chilled...
Year late I know, but this version and the album version give this song so much more power and emotion in my opinion. Being that I heard the album version first I never really liked the brewery sessions all that much. This version is much more powerful and flowing
@@brandonherzig2468 I always respond to 1+ year old comments myself. I think its bc i heard the brewery sessions first. That and its live - the album version is done in a studio and is put together and mixed differently - retakes and what not - but with this, aside from post mixing, its genuine and speaks to his ability.
You can slowly hear him changing his voice from his earlier stuff not as deep and trying to sing more
He probably now has a vocal coach who will sadly coach the raw talent he had
