I had a few skirts like that when i was a young girl, mum made for me!!! Then i made myself a few as i grew older they are comfortable and easy to wear, no zips or panels!!! I also cut down a few dresses i no longer wore and gathered them with elastic in the waistline!!!
Me toooooooo! I have cupboards full A dear friend went into a home and she had a life times worth of material and l was lucky to get 3 car loads ! When l saw how much it was my husband had a fit and said you can’t keep it all but guess what!!! I fitted it in and still l buy more!!! Xx
After I successfully completed that 7th grade Home Ec class, in early 1960's, I was told to make all of my clothes... with 1 piece of advice by my mother...ONLY cut out what you can sew up, immediately. So, I was able to make my wardrobe from then on. Even charged a quarter, in college, for sewing patches on jackets & bluejeans... we didn't let ripped jeans stay ripped, back then. All she really wanted was for me to KNOW how to be responsible for HER light green Singer, in HER mahogany cabinet...including how to keep it clean!
My hips are a size larger than my tops so dresses either have to be homemade or altered. Thus I usually wear skirts and tops.I usually prefer mid calf length - I'm 73, so legs no longer good looking. Thank you for this very simple method to make a skirt.
Back in the 1950s, I wore homemade skirts almost like your's to school. Mine were made from cotton. Thank you for showing me how good these skirts look. This type of skirt would be perfect for Summer. I don't wear shorts or short pants. Long, pull on skirts will be perfect. I need to get my T-shirts out and go shopping for fabric to match my best T-shirts. I thought at first that you had made a matching blouse to match your skirt. Making a matching blouse of the same fabric and print will give me the look of a dress. Plus the skirt and blouse may be worn with other tops and bottoms. Thank you for this wonder idea nd video.
I'm like you I were only skirts but both long and short. I just got done sewing a skirt a day for 30 days and had to go out and get some t shirts. Each shirt I got goes with 2 or 3 of my homemade ones.
I prefer cotton, cottons are for summer. If you look at hot countries, they only use natural fabrics like cotton & linen. Plastics like polyester make you sweat because it holds in the heat, plus it’s not biodegradable.
You have inspired me! I first began making my own clothes in 1965, and continued until I began quilt construction in 1995. I have not made a garment since then. I do, however, have a beautiful piece of knit fabric that would result in a lovely skirt. It wouldn't take long to do. I just need to buy elastic for the waist. Thank you for sharing this today. Nina in Wichita, Kansas.
Nina Trusty be careful, those trips for elastic can get costly in the fabric store. That material looks nice, oh it feels nice, one skirt and new quilt fabric or two or ten maybe. I think material store should come with a warning, Enter at your own risk. 😃😄😅😉
I've been making these for years...we call them Mom's 15 min skirt!! I don't hem...just run it through the serger...these are generally very casual skirts...so that type of hem is fine!! I have several of these skirts in my arsenal of summer must haves!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Have never made clothing and these skirts look perfect for summertime wear. Guess I'll have to take the plunge and make these! Thanks so much for all you do for us!
Thank you I have just bought beautiful floaty fabric with a lace edge I did not know what to make with it I just knew I had to buy it…I now know exactly what I am making thank you so much for the inspiration. As always a great video and thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge. Kind regards from Scotland xx
Thank you so much for this video. You make sewing a skirt look too easy. My abilities are so bad, my mother said she didn’t have the patience to teach me, and she was right. I retained nothing from my sewing lessons. She passed a few weeks ago and watching this video reminded me of her. She made me the most gorgeous dress and also my bridesmaid dress for my friend’s wedding. She was truly gifted. Im going to get some fabric and give this a go. Thank you, again.
All I can saw is Wow! Thanks for the great tutorial. I came to sewing later in life and some things seem very challenge worthy. The way you described the details of sewing it makes me unafraid to try. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. That's an easy way to make a skirt. Lovey it. My Mom was great in making any type of clothes. Even seeing in a catalogue something she liked and rapidly it was ready. Her sewing machine is mine now and I use it a lot makes me have fond memories of her. Sigh. But readily I say I'll never get to sew perfectly as she did. It's one of my hobbies now.
Laura you really made me giggle! Elastic = a big bag of fabric!! Fabric stores are dangerous and deliciously tempting 😆. Nice skirt, thank you for sharing as always.
I love this skirt tutorial. I am a big fan of yours. I make your pillow covers all the time, I use the same pillow I just switch out my pillow cover. Thank you so much for making sewing fun. I am a huge fan of yours. GOD Bless
I'm looking to make more skirts this summer. I have a condition and since 2014 I haven't been able to wear pants until less they're the stretchy/exercise ones. Can't handle the seam in jeans. So I make a lot of skirts. I like a floral or some sort of pattern and most in stores are solid colors or a pattern that's just not for me. Thanks for sharing. You're such a good teacher.
My favorite outfit is a flowy skirt, camisole, and cropped short sleeve light sweater or thin bolero style over piece. So when I saw your outfit I was like YES! This is mine kind of sewing! I have just the fabric for it too, waiting to be made. And that’s exactly how I do elastic to keep it from twisting.
LOL covid has had me gain weight thus having me thinking of making myself a few skirts. Thanks for the trick on the elastic. Didn't know there were no roll elastics. I'll get sewing on a new projet. Thanks again. I love your simple and well taught video. And I love your personality. Thanks again. First time I see your video
Thank is certainly a great idea. I wear jeans often, but I’m getting older and would like something a little more dressy, but casual) when I go out! Thank you!
This will be a great idea for some of those silky soft cotton quilt fabrics that I won’t use for quilts. But first I need to measure how much I have for a skirt. The long skirt is a great idea for a strapless dress!
When I make an elastic casing like this, I also stitch along the top (folded) edge, too. It just makes the casing a little more “tailored”. Great tutorial!
Hi! I had a busy day sewing and filming in my sewing room today. I'm so thankful that I get to sit down and watch your video! I'm still hand sewing and mending my blue jeans but I have you to keep me company. I hope you have a beautiful week ahead. Thank you for sharing your video and your talent.
Thank you for sharing, it is a lovely skirt, and you included great tips! I have my Bernina Record from the '70's and now 2 more that my dear Aunt left me in her will, from the late '90's.
Hi Laura - The skirt looks awesome on you. Love the different ways you can wear it. The sleeveless dress is such a great idea. I’ve made these type skirts before and they are so simple to make and the best part is you get to choose the fabrics you want. See ya next time! 💕☀️🧵
Shalom from Texas, I'm a super beginner sewing person, I have been wanting to learn how to make skirts as I love how it is flattering to a woman especially with hips and butt, you make this look so easy, I set a goal to learn to sew this summer . I will be following your videos and guidance thank you so much 👑🛡️🗡️🔥🧬🌈
I absolutely loved this skirt video. I've been wanting to sew a simple skirt now for quite a long time. I certainly feel confident I can make it. Thank you so very much.
I love the way you shop! Elastic is all I need….and yet one finds themselves leaving the store with a big bag of goodies! In high school I made some skirts like that and tops to match! I never knew about all those hints you told us about! The material you chose is absolutely beautiful and love how it can be a skirt or a dress! Beautiful!
I made a similar skirt in 7th or 8th grade Home-Ec class I had finished the assigned project and there was still a week or so left in the sewing portion of the class before we switched to the cooking portion so this was an assignment that kept me busy while the others were still struggling with their own projects. Back then 60 inch fabrics were not the norm so mine ended up a lot tighter, harder to take big steps. Mom taught us (three girls) how to sew when my older sister was in Home-Ec class three years earlier and I was already making some of my own school clothes by the time I took the class.
Thank you sooooo much for another amazing how-to video! I’m a quilter, not a seamstress but I like to make me a few pieces of comfortable clothing for the warmer weather. This will DEFINITELY be something that I make for myself because I just can’t seem to find what I want in the average box store. 👍🏻💖👵🏻
I found lovely lightweight 100% linen fabric at Jo-Ann stores that is perfect for gently gathered elastic-waist skirts like the one in this video. I also have some skirts made from cotton, but my linen skirts just seem to drape and fall better than the cotton ones.
Love, love, love this easy skirt!! The fabric is simply beautiful!! I know I can make this because of you Laura. Thanks for explaining it throughly!!!!🤗 👍💙💕 💜
Making one now! Thanks! The right fabric makes all the difference! The nearest fabric store I know of is nearly 2 hrs away so when I can go, I'm planning to load up!
Love your instructions. I too, made skirts similar to this years ago but they had a zipper and a waist band. This skirt will be so much easier. I prefer skirts or dresses in the summer because they are cooler. Thank you for making this tutorial.
Laura very pretty skirt going have to make it just have the right fabric for it to!!! Its nice quick and easy just what I like, thank you so much for sharing with us all and teaching us! Thank you for all you done US Hugs Liz x
Recently I was fortunate to purchase a friend’s serger and have been wanting to make something with it. I am definitely going to give this skirt a try. Thank you for another wonderful video💕
I did a toddler dress pattern with a skirt this style and was looking for a video to help me do one with elastic for just the skirt! This was so helpful and the tips to prevent the elastic from twisting are perfect! Thank you!
I find it easier to do a neat bottom hem before I make the tube shape. It’s actually quite easy to then decide what length you want and adjust from the top if necessary . I do the same with curtains, as the bottom hem is going to be so visible, I’d rather sew it on a long flat piece as I’m not an expert machine stitcher and I can get a neater result that way. I also prefer a long piece of flat core to tie through a little gap instead of elastic- maybe I’ve been unlucky, but that flat elastic always seems to twist and distort on me looking bulky and messy. You looked so cute btw!
Very nice! I hadn’t thought about making myself clothing in a very long time. Just piecing and quilting. It might be time for a couple of spring skirts.😁
I hate when the elastic twists, and it almost always does in the wash. Have had to take out the waist seam on pants and skirts to fix it so many times I could scream. Usually, I take out the waist seam, sew the elastic to the fabric at the TOP on the underside of the band where it sits against me, then fold the fabric back down over the elastic and stitch the seam back down to enclose the elastic. This puts that stitching at the top so it does not fold or creep down, and the seam does not show. I do this on skirts and pants I make as well. The elastic can not roll or twist this way. But it is a time waisting pain to make sure that the elastic is stretched evenly along the fabric before sewing. Your tip to sew vertically every several inches just saved me hours of tedium at my machine that I can use for more sewing fun on quilts and other projects. Thank you "sew" much!
Wowsers Laura... Definitely making one.. I got some free fabric to make one.. Going to order the elastic and love the extra stitching on the band to stop it twisting...
I was watching videos on making sausage, recognized a familiar voice, paused a moment to zero in. And if I’m not mistaken; you were right along your husband in the video. And when he said your name, I just had a good chuckle!
I purchased beautiful fabric to make my wife a shirt, as it was the end if the roll I purchased thr lot. I made the skirt as you have done, but made a pleat at the lower edge as I thought it may have been a bit tight for a big step.
Oh my gosh, you are so cute! This looks so easy to do, now I have to just try it. I need skirts for a job that I started and waiting on someone to make them is a killer, and to buy them is a hit and miss because there is nothing nice enough locally, and online you take chances if they'll even fit let alone look good. I had a hard time focusing on what you were saying though, so I had to keep going back, because I was so focused on that beautiful silver ring sparkling! Lol, no joke! I'm saving this to a playlist to keep watching. I'm a very crafty person but sewing was always on my list of 'can't do's'! Thank you for sharing this!
Your video was hands down the best I’ve watched. I feel so very confident to make my daughter and her friend their Halloween skirts now. I thought one yard of fabric was going to be plenty for the two of them as they want mini skirts but after watching your tutorial they are going to have the best skirts now and I most definitely need more fabric. I think I’ll make a practice one first to be on the safe side as the fabric they have chosen wasn’t cheap and I’d hate to mess that fabric up. Blessings
Hello Laura I'm new to your channel thank you so much for sharing your sewing expertise with me I really love the way you explain how to make that skirt you are amazing❤ will definitely make 2 skirts.
You can also pick up dresses in charity shops, chop the bottom off and add elastic/tie to the top. I’ve found some really beautiful older fabrics that way.
I have made my skirts this way for many years now. Sometimes, I have used extra wide elastic, and , dividing the skirt and elastic into fourths, I have matched those points, then pulled the elastic and sewed the elastic on in several rows -- sort of like store purchased skirts sometimes have. I do turn down the top about 1/4 or so of an inch. Then, I put the top edge of the elastic at the turned under edge. I make that m y first line of stitching. This is a little more time consuming, but not by much. I am sure you already have all this in your arsenal, but maybe someone else can benefit from it. Thank you for an excellent video!
I sew clothes and few little quilts but watch your calming educational videos. I see how some quilters never learned how to use patterns or sew clothes tools but have great skills to rely on. Thanks
Can't believe how many videos I had to go through to find this simple video. This is so calming
This is one of my absolute favorite channels. She’s just so soothing and makes everything sew easy!
Yes I know what you mean. People talking to much , playing music, rambling instead of getting to the point.
I had a few skirts like that when i was a young girl, mum made for me!!! Then i made myself a few as i grew older they are comfortable and easy to wear, no zips or panels!!! I also cut down a few dresses i no longer wore and gathered them with elastic in the waistline!!!

@@geniesmith7319 Yes that would have helped greatly. Would have maybe made the video too long, but it would help .

I used to make skirts like these by hand, no pattern, no sewing machine. Simple top, blazer and heels and I was ready for work.
Excellent tutorial. You make making a skirt look so easy.

Nice skirt, thank you for sharing as always.
I avoided them during the shut down. Unfortunately I discovered online shopping. I now am stocked up for several years 😊
Hahah Kim Gage… bring on the projects!!
The same thing always happens to me!
I really enjoy your videos, but I very much appreciate the garment sewing advice and reminders. I enjoyed this video, and thanks for the ideas!

Very beautiful skirt, love how you showed the option to wear as a dress also. Beautiful job, Thank you
Rayon challis is my favorite flowy skirt fabric.
Where do you buy it? I really like it too! don't see it in my local fabric store!
Once again i learnt something new: non roll elastic! Who ever invented this: thank you so much!
Works well in boxers, shorts & pajamas!!

I like the variety of ways to wear the skirt/dress. Great fabric find, so lovely.
Thank You for the detailed verbal instructions. Also your camera view is awesome, which I appreciate. You made me feel confident that I can do this.

Dorothy Young; and it keeps the top edge from rubbing on the elastic and showing wear. Never thought of wearing as a dress, cute, cute.
Thank you for the great tip 😊
Thanks for this great tip, I will add this when I try making my first skirt!
I believe I'll do that also. It will make it look a little better, I think.
I love making skirts for me to wear especially with an elastic waist. So simple, sew very easy!

You are a great explainer! My mother tongue is not English, I understood everything you spoke, though! And the skirt looks great on you! Thank you!
Love your skirt. Great printed material.
'i don't know what happened?'
I laughed , such a familiar phrase in a material store.
Lol
Thankyou for your help.
Shalom from Texas, I'm a super beginner sewing person, I have been wanting to learn how to make skirts as I love how it is flattering to a woman especially with hips and butt, you make this look so easy, I set a goal to learn to sew this summer . Thank you Laura. I really trust all your tutorials and If I am going to invest my time and money, I know I will get a great result with your help.
I made a similar skirt in 7th or 8th grade Home-Ec class I had finished the assigned project and there was still a week or so left in the sewing portion of the class before we switched to the cooking portion so this was an assignment that kept me busy while the others were still struggling with their own projects.
Thank you for mentioning the "non roll elastic". I had no idea such a thing existed and I need that for comfort for sure!!
Love, love, love this easy skirt!! The fabric is simply beautiful!! I know I can make this because of you Laura. Thanks for explaining it throughly!!!!🤗 👍💙💕 💜
I just found this pattern. I love it!!! I watch your quilting tutorials all the time. Thank you!!! (I watch Ivo every week also)❤❤
I've made these for my granddaughters when little. This inspired me to try to make something for me!
Making one now! Thanks! The right fabric makes all the difference! The nearest fabric store I know of is nearly 2 hrs away so when I can go, I'm planning to load up!
Oh, is this cute. So versatile. Pockets on the side would be great, too.

Hi Laura I enjoy watching your videos so much but they have always been crafting videos I enjoyed this one hope you do some more dress making ones.
Thank you for this tutorial. I've wanted to try garment sewing, and this is a great place to start.
Thank you Laura, It turned out lovely and looks good on you. 🥰 Chris
Good tutorial. I haven't sewn any clothes for years now but may make this.
I was taught to sew a narrow seam along the top of the elastic to keep it in place along with the bottom row of stitches.
Awesomely simple.
I do believe you have inspired me to get sewing!
Thankyou!'
🤣🤣 funny how fabric just jumps in to our basket 🧺
I know, me too! 🛒...
Beautiful skirt! Great tutorial! Thank you, Laura!
Thanks for sharing! Great tutorial & I’ll give this a try!
I did a toddler dress pattern with a skirt this style and was looking for a video to help me do one with elastic for just the skirt! This was so helpful and the tips to prevent the elastic from twisting are perfect! Thank you!
This is a wonderful idea! Thank you for sharing. And I also love that white jacket, so cute!
That's cute, I learnt how to hold the elastic straight and shall be doing it as I do stitch these skirts sometimes. Thank you 😊
You have inspired me. Your instructions are clear and makes sense for a beginner like me. Thank you

Thank you. Your style of teaching is very clear. I’ll be making a skirt similar to this with a soft Indian silk
I was watching videos on making sausage, recognized a familiar voice, paused a moment to zero in. And if I’m not mistaken; you were right along your husband in the video. And when he said your name, I just had a good chuckle!
I've made a number of skirts like these in the past. The are great for hot weather.
I purchased beautiful fabric to make my wife a shirt, as it was the end if the roll I purchased thr lot. I made the skirt as you have done, but made a pleat at the lower edge as I thought it may have been a bit tight for a big step.

I absolutely love the versatility of the skirt/dress! And the fabric you chose is lovely.
Thanks Laura!! You’re awesome and I love this video tutorial.
Love how you made it into a little dress, too!
Loved this skirt, you reminded me how easy it is to make a beautiful skirt! Thanks so much!
How many yards @60" wide did you purchase? Would also be helpful for new sewists to hear some examples of "flowy, drapey" fabrics.
Thank you making something which feels impossible to do look relatively easy. 🙏❤️
oh my how cute! and it looked so easy thank you for showing how so easy it is to make your own skirt
This is so beautiful. I must go shopping for some fabric, and make myself a skirt, just like this, Thank you so much for sharing. 🇨🇦❤️🥰
It is very beautiful, simple and sensational. 👍Thank you very much.🤩
Thank you for sharing this tutorial and make it so easy to follow for us newbies ❤
Love the versatility of it!
Such a pretty skirt. TY for sharing this technique with us.
I sew clothes and few little quilts but watch your calming educational videos. I see how some quilters never learned how to use patterns or sew clothes tools but have great skills to rely on. Thanks
This looks like a great and easy project!
Dang! Thanks for the reminder that the elastic (and fabric!) needs to make it over my hips! Waist measurement isn't the only thing I need to know!😅
not if you put your skirt on over your head which is the correct way to do it because of the hips.😊
This video was SO helpful, and you’re so very pleasant! I feel like I just learned how to sew from a dear friend! Thank you!!
Thank you for your videos. You are a very good instructor! I have learned so much from you.
That is so simple! Thank you. Cheers from England xx
